new cheap comp setup

i went and bought the cheapest "good" stuff i could at frys

gigabyte s-series p35-ds3r motherboar (fsb1333, 1200dr2 etc...) $129.99
intel core 2 duo (64x, dual 2.3gig cores, 1333mhz fsb) $179.99
4gig patriot pc6400 800mhz 2x2gb ddr2 ram $99.00
geforce 8500GT 512mb ddr2 pci-e SLI reay $159.99
500w extreme power atx power supply (can't get power supply around $100 so xbox is way better) $49.99

i already have drives, but i'm going to pick up one sata raptor drive later $179.99

$558

nothing is "top of the line" but its all close and will make a great cheap system.

Not bad, doing it yourself is definitely the way to go.

Re: new cheap comp setup

i got that same ram on sale @ newegg for like $75 two weeks ago after a rebate. but its great to see descent 4g ram hitting below $100 now! used the same card too. they're good for the money. plus, if you get lazy you could probably ebay a used one to SLI for $15-25 within the next 6 months. that'd be tits :D i know cause it'd be abit faster than the 8600 i have downstairs, and it'll do anything shy of crysis.
ebay yourself a pair of raptor's and raid-0 em. multi-cpu/core's and striping arrays (RAID-1,3-6) change lives lol!

sounds like a slick puss to me :y

what core duo did you go with?

J-SMITH69 12-17-2007 01:09 AM

Re: new cheap comp setup

the only problem is my board only has one pci-e slot

i thought about getting a dual pci-e board, but the only ones they had where 1 16x and 1 8x

so you like the 8500gt card? seems like it'll work

none of the prices i posted at with rebates so there is no teasing

i thought about getting 3.0 one but it was about $150 more.

two 2.3gig cores should be enough

Re: new cheap comp setup

Yeah I meant more of what model it is, I'm guessing the 6550. I was going to go with the 6420 since it's got an extra multiplier but is the same chip otherwise, so would overclock a bit faster...but the 6550 is $35 cheaper on newegg so still a good buy.

I'm want to piece together a budget computer soon.

Lol that video card blows. I'll stick with my 8800gtx they can be found for a decent price and they out perform that card by 10 fold

I'll sell ya 1 month old 7950gt512 for cheap if you want it random ;) And a 8800gtx is old technology that can be beat by cards that cost 220$ while they still cost over 400$

Sounds like a good setup you got there, very close to mine. I just bought a 8600gt-512 for my old man for xmas, I hope its a decent card.... ------- video cards up here are so pricey, I should have bought it online for sure, oh well next time.

i don't have any games that new to need a better card.

New Egg is selling recertified Raptors for $89 IIRC. Two of those in raid would rip.

$220 for a 8800gtx seems like a really good deal. Where from?
Ive been looking at the 512 8800gt. Toms hardware had a good comp. article, and the price/perf. sweet spot was the 8800GT.

You might wanna look at a radeon x1950xt from newegg. I know nvidia is pwning noobs at the moment, but a couple months ago I was working on a decent budget setup and that card was pretty damn good buy.

It all depends how much you're trying to spend, but check it out on tomshardware.

Re: new cheap comp setup

The 512 8800 GT is next to impossible to find right now according to www.hardocp.com. And when you do find it, it's likely to be priced over MSRP.

I wouldn't know because I swore on everything I'd never buy another nVidia card after the FX series. Basically I got conned into buying probably the worst video card money could buy, for a whole lot of money at Best Buy, 5200 FX ftl. That was before I knew a lot about building computers, but I still have a beef with nVidia.

The card I've got my eye on right now is the 3870 from ATi, close to the same performance as the 8800 GT but not quite - and the price reflects that. Plus they're readily available right now for about 200-250 depending on where you get it.

You can read more on it here

you got conned: you were a ------- idiot that didn't research on his own lmao!

Budget_SI i love my 8600, couldn't ask for more at the price i got it at.

RS i know. just like the performance :D. the + side to raptors is the spead, and the old school 5-year warranty let's you ebay them very cheap and not worry about it. for the money, raid-0 seagate's are better. two 300gb seagates can be had cheaper than one retail 150g raptor, blow the doors off it speed wise, and are still faaaar quieter :\
that's the only thing i really hate about raptors... the sound is terrible. WD drives have ALWAYS been noisyier than most other non-proffesional drives. they have very loud head movements. id glady trade the two raptors in my room for a pair of seagates :\

i installed vista ultimate.

i like vista a lot, the look and feel reminds me of fedora

it pisses me off that i can only use 3gig or the 4 gigs of ram because of the stupid allocation bs...

but vista is cool so far. was a pita to install because you can't boot of these msdn disks

so i had to nigga rig it first install xp home, then vista on my new 500gig barracuda 3g/s sata2 hdd (thanks suckah) 8)

i couldn't find our msdn copy of vista 64x :(

ive been needing to do this, i built my computer with my buddy back in 2000/2001, i think i started in 2000, and then did some more upgrades down the road but i havent touched it for years, it works but nothing special hahah. geforce 440fx grafics card if you nogs remember that ----. its older then old. ive definitly lost track of whats good and whats not. ive researched a few times but they change way the ---- to much. so when i decide to build a new computer ill then find the time to research for deals on nice stuff but not brand ass raping price new. haha i cant believe the prices some people pay for the newest ---- that will become old news in a month.

YOU THINK YOU WENT CHEAP???!?!?

I just finished building my computer today... like seriously less then 3 hours ago..

Abit An52 Motherboard - 74.99
Nvidia GForce 8400gs - 84.99
Cool Master power sopply 500W - 49.99 (only 10 dollars after Rebate. saves me $30)
Cool Master CPU fan - 14.99
AMD Athalon A64 X2 4800+ - 95
DDR2 2 gb PC6400 800MHZ Ram - 42.99

Total spent = $363 + discount.. i really only spent like $335 not including my rebate. there are some nice kinks to have your Brother work at Fry's Electronics.

nothing like upgrading Duel core processor for literally 300 dollars.

Yeah, I was going to tell you that R-S' build is faster for only a little more. Buying online (newegg, tigerdirect) is most likely cheaper than the retail chains. When I built my last computer, AMD and ATI were whoopin' some ass, now it's Intel and nVidia on top. We have an nVidia building down the street, not sure what the hell they do there, maybe some R&D :)

At first I was confused why your 4gb of ram wasn't visible, since 32-bit can address 4gb of ram, then I did some googling and see why... Pretty lame. Do you still have all 4gb installed? It says you don't see 4gb because the OS/BIOS/etc reserves it for addressing purposes. If this is the case then you should get better performance since there's more space to work with (although you won't be able to use it).

no your system is not half higher. it's only 1 tipy toe higher then what i have. 8400gs to your 8500Gt no brainer. the only thing you card has over my card is SLI capability. Both of our grafix cards are rated the same over all performance.
we are both running Duel core setup, mines is a Athalon processors clocked at 2.5GHZ X2, Over your 2.3GHZ X2. your setup is 1333MHZ FSB and my setup is 1000MHz FSB.

im running 2 gigs of ram. your at 4 gigs both at 800 MHZ.

------------------------------------------------------------

so you got this over me. PCI-e SLI capable mother board and SLI GFX, 2 Gigs of ram. 333MHZ FSB.

i have this over you, 200MHZ X2 more speed then you..

the only real world thing that makes your system better then mine is the 333FSB extra speed. the faster CPU won't make if any difference between our systems. aside that i hardly consider you Double what i am running.

if anything the only thing that you doubled was the price you paid. :6

blade8r 12-22-2007 05:59 AM

Re: new cheap comp setup

although i must admit.. you can just simply add another SLI rafix card and call it a day and take a spanking on my system from any kind of gaming needs.

and the fact that core 2 duos are much better than the amd 64x

amd has lost a lot of ground

whats the L1 and L2 cache on your cpu?

Re: new cheap comp setup

An older, high end card like the 7950 is going to be better than the 8 series mid range chips. It's sad AMD has lost ground, but they'll pick up steam again.
