New to Cars, have questions
sup...what exactly is a thermostat..is it hte thing that measures the engine temp or wat?
also what are the benefits of having a twin chamber bov to a regular bov?
when you put somne type of forced induction on a car, is the car more reliable or less reliable? ppl tell me that it depends on the job that hte mechanic did, whether he did it right or not. what would some wrong things that he could of done in order for hte forced induction system to perform bad.
i havent bought a car yet, but going to soon....i heard you have to use tranny fluid or something? if the car is manual how do you use the tranny fluid...how often etc...
like ive said previously i am completely new to cars. thanx

In brief; the thermostat is what controls the coolant in the engine. It is a little valve that opens and closes allowing coolant to flow through the engine, from the radiator, which cools it.
Typically, you get your engine temperature reading from the temperature sending sensor. It's normally a one wire sensor.

As long as you don't have a leak anywhere on the gearbox/tranny you will never need to use any tranny oil.

Re:New to Cars, have questions
Dual diaphram BOV is closed at idle and wont suck in debris.
The engine wont last as long if you boost it due to higher amounts of pressure being applied on all of the internals. It wont die right away but it will hurt the longevity of the engine.

DO NOT buy a turbo car or make a turbo car yet.. you need to start off a little bit slower. Why don't you go rent a car and play with it for a week, figure out how they work.. or buy one with a factory warranty, that warranty might help you out.
You're only looking to get screwed over by a mechanic hard core if you take a car and start messing with it.

Re:New to Cars, have questions
if you have a car and want to turbo it, make sure that someone who knows what they are doing the job for you because I honestly dont think you know enough.
I second Quadnie on this one... Go rent a car and just drive it like you stole it... Oh yea make sure to get some insurance on it just in case it dies. Last year my cousin rented a focus for a day trip and drove the "F" out of it. By the time he got it back to the rental place, the car couldnt go into reverse at ALL and hesitated... Oh yea it was an auto! hah =)

If you are interested in modding cars (which im assumgin you are) i suggest taking some auto classes at your local jc or if youre still in highscholl take them there.
try and get a basic understanding for how cars work.
and if you turbo a car that did not come turbo'd from the factory it will not be as reliable as it would be if it was left stock. not to say it wont be reliable , just not to the level of factory reliablity, that goes for a lot of mods though, not just turbo charging.

Re:New to Cars, have questions
I will take this one.
yes you are right...it does depend on who does your set-up. You can put a turbo on your car, and do it right, and have many miles of fun. if you do it all ghetto, it will run ghetto, and wont last long.(most of us on this site) it will ''nickle and dime you to death'' boosting and even modifing your car in anyway is very addicting. If you are gonna pay for someone to do your work for you, make sure you go to a reputible place, and take someone who knows what they are doing and talking about. For a first car, get something fun. get a beater, something cheap. Have fun with it, then move onto bigger and better things. You can turbo and modify anything, I mean anything.
-my best advice, and its how I learned alot of things. READ! go to your local book shop, books a million, barnes and noble, borders, whatever you have, and get a big stack of magazines and books, get yourself something to drink, and spend a rainy afternoon just flippin through them. I used to do this all the time...also the internet is the motherload for all information for any kind of research.

Re:New to Cars, have questions
so the only advantage of a twin chamber bov is that it will not suck in debris?
im 15...i have alot of friends with nice cars (tuned/show) i go to the street races almost everyweekend like going to the track.....i have a job now but not planning to buy a car for about 2 years that way i can keep saving my money and buy a bad *** car when im 17 or 18, and also by then ill know a shitload more about cars. and out of all the car forums...i got the quickest answers on this one. i like the pictures they show when they install turbos, etc.
What maintanance types of things do you have to do other than refill coolant and oil changes for your car? if a car is auto do you also need tranny fluid? how often? or do u just need tranny fluid if its a manual.
thanx
