It's the "name" of your network that the router broadcasts to distinguish it from other networks.

its not recognizing the SSID then, it has an icon in the bottom right that says a local network cable is unplugged

You need to disable the local area connection and establish a wireless connection.

go to start, then connections or connect to, then hit show all connections. right click the local area connection and hit disable. then go to the left side and hit create new connection and follow the setup wizard. a ------ could do it

i would find a modle number and download the driver set. sometimes if you are using lets say a linksys card it will want to use lynksys software to see the networks and not the built in windows. Right click my computer and choose manage. Then selece device manager from the left. do you see any question marks? if so what does it say?
