not sure if they kept it or what, i know she didn't bring it home. she said they took some meat off of it and that was it, she thinks the guide kept the rest, she didn't want to pay $1000 to ship it home.

Yea still that's the problem, I bet they ate it, but they take out tourists on these charter boats and catch fish every day.
The fish are usually killed, more than likely eaten, but killed none the less.
Sailfish are large pelagic fish that have a very long time till they mature enough to reproduce, that is if they make it; evolutionarily speaking there's not supposed to be tons of the things swimming around, just enough to eat enough small fish to maintain balance.
When you kill off the apex predators you get an insurgence of bullshit fish, read: Jacks, Laurals, Bonita, Blue Runner, etc., which will eventually kill the tourist-fishing economy (if that's what they care so much about). The big side effect of this is excessive fish waste from retarded filler fish (meant to be eaten) that reproduce quickly and drain the ecosystem of sustenance.
Generally it's a very bad thing, commercial fishing has enjoyed decades of basically "regulation free" business and we're now paying for it.
No bueno.
