my first weld!! *with pics!!* *updated again with charge pipe*

NEWER PICS AT THE BOTTOM

well, i bought a welder a while ago, like back in november or something, and i've never even used it, i bought it off of racerex and he threw in a free grinder :o well, i bought a crush bent 90 to use for my down pipe in case my mandrel didn't come in time, but it did, so i had an extra shitty bend laying around and decided to break out the welder last night ;D i honestly don't know why i didn't try it earlier, i guess i was just scared because i had never welded at all before :-\ anyways, it doesn't look bad at all and it could have looked a lot better if i grinded it down and welded some more, but i didn't feel like breaking out the grinder too, so i just kept building it up.

well, here's a random pic of anthony's (custom coach/speedpartsrus) hot new magnets that he sends with his orders, i'm glad i didn't throw the invoice paper away like usual b/c it was wrapped up in it.

and here's my welder, like i said i bought it off racerex for like 125 shipped with a free grinder! smokin deal!

Cool deal. Keep practising, you will get good in no time. That doesn't look bad for a first try with flux core wire.

Holly crap what the heck is that :-X

Looks just like my welds also :-\ :-\

Anything to get it done, with a little bit of grinding it'll look fine. Good job ;D

lol, that looks like a pile os -------. :-X I have that same welder(almost)and an automatic mask and I can weld mild steel pretty good, better than that anyways. :P I suck at welding. :-[

cut me a brake doc, that was the first time i've ever welded, EVAR! i don't think it's too bad for the first weld in my life, i'm gonna practice some more and start welding up my charge pipes, i think i'll get good at it, i was getting the hang of getting a good bead, it was just that i didn't grind down the first stuff that i did :P

Re:my first weld!! *with pics!!* (of course)

its..................................... decent for a first time :-X try going in an overlapping motion.. either go forward a bit then back track on your weld half way back... or go in a circular motion basically doing the same thing.. the circular motion is usually for when you have to get 2 sides and the are not on the same level... i'll get a weld and show you what i mean ;D

bmaca455 04-15-2004 07:32 AM

Re:my first weld!! *with pics!!* (of course)

The circular motion is pretty much a deffinate must for nice looking welds. Also when I was first learning how to weld, they guy who was teaching me said that with a wirefeed, you should "push" the weld. So pretty much have the gun angled down and over where you've alread welded. I'm not sure if it just works better this way or mabey because you can see better, but I found my welds getting quite a bit better. And of course if you don't have the capablity already, MIG makes welds infinatly more beautiful.

Re:my first weld!! *with pics!!* (of course)

yeah, like i said, i got the hang of it after a while, but i was just welding on top of the mess that i did at first. i also had my heat seatings too high at first and was blasting through the pipe, so i had to try and fill those in. it's pretty cool, i got a few pieces of scrap pipe, i'm gonna practice some more tonight ;D

........ :-X Keep on mastering it teg you'll get the hang of it. Not bad...not bad...

to me it looks like those pipes have that galvenized (spelling) coating on them I bet when you weld it keeps poping and spiting. take a wire wheel and clean that ---- off the pipes. it will weld so much nicer. and a nother thing that I told buy older guys who weld that helps weld flash is to cut a potatoe in half and stick then on your eyes, the starch helps the burning feel. 8)

flux core sucks ------- ball sack, but it will work if you dont have a gas MIG.

I welded my BOV on with flux core. just make a fatty ass weld and then grind it down and it will look decent.

it just takes experience/skill. i've seen some guys make some nice ass welds with flux core. i would rather learn on the most difficult, then when i get gas, it will be a lot easier.

clean the surface better with a wire brush or a hi speed one the beads will stick better and youll get a better weld.....

seriously man always grind off the galvanizing or aluminizing, it will weld cleaner and the fumes wont give yiou a seizure

Thats a good idea to learn with flux core. After you do it for so long, you should be able to lay down a bead next to a mig bead and wouldn't be able to tell the difference.Looks good though. ;)

those bends look like they came from schucks...im using the same ---- for my car...

oh and a tip: before you take a pic of your 'welds' take a wire brush to them so they dont look as bad...

projekteg 04-15-2004 12:41 PM

Re:my first weld!! *with pics!!* (of course)

yeah, that was a 90° crush bend that i bought from auto zone to use for my down pipe incase my 2.5 mandrel hadn't came in yet, but it did, so i figured i would learn to weld on it instead of exchanging it for a quart of oil or something. i didn't know about grinding off the aluminizing, i'll be sure to try that. i'll hit it up some more tonight and show you guys the progress ;D i'll also put my grinder to use so maybe i won't get flamed so bad for the 'doo doo bead'...

bwahaha, i was waiting for somebody to say something, i'm surprised it took this long. i wasnt's welding on the wood, i was just using it to keep the pipe from rolling when i turned it over, it just so happens it was sitting on it when i took the pic. but yeah, some card board that was near caugh fire briefly!

even tho the weld looks like ass, it would probly hold, and thats all that matters (to me anyway)

Re:my first weld!! *with pics!!* (of course)

Looks pretty good for your first weld ever :P Try grinding about 1/2 inch away from the outside of the pipes you will be welding all the way around, just enought to take that galvanized ---- of. Welding flat surfaces is a little easier to learn at first too, I find welding pipes a bit harder. Keep it up you'll have it soon enought ;)

racerex 04-15-2004 03:16 PM

Re:my first weld!! *with pics!!* (of course)

I would go buy a straight piece of pipe and put a cutting wheel on the grinder and cut it into sections. Then just practice welding them back together.

And yeah, if you get a decent bead that doesn't burn through you can just grind them down flat. Most of that flux residue will come right off with a wire brush.

draztik 04-15-2004 03:18 PM

Re:my first weld!! *with pics!!* (of course)

what helped me a ton is i just layed straight beads over and over again..... then start to weld ---- together in different angles.. get used to every angle cuz a circle is well.. round so you have to follow around it. :) just practice straight beads first off..

Re:my first weld!! *with pics!!* (of course)

I don't think that looks that bad. I'm no welder, but I bet half of these -----s in here didn't do much better on their first try. :P Way to encourage your brother!!! :o

I've only had one welding lesson, given by Ghetto D. All I remember is it's ok to wear sandals when you weld, put the wire in between the cut, close your eyes and squeeze the trigger. You can use this as referance when you practice again tonight. ;D

Hey Anthony, when you gonna hook up MY fridge? 8)

Re:my first weld!! *with pics!!* (of course)

well, i used some of the tips i got in this post and grinded off the galvanized ---- first this time, i also beveled the edge of the pipe a tad (and ran to kmart and picked up a wire brush and some gloves ;D). i was grinding it down after every pass and basically the holes were getting smaller and smaller after ever pass, it's pretty time consuming to grind it down every time, but it looks a hell of a lot better, i didn't grind down the last pass or it would have looked a lot better. how the ---- am i suppose to grind the inside of the pipe where little pieces of wire have come through? i cleaned them up with a wire brush before the pics, i think it's pretty obvious which one is the new one ;) 2nd weld 3vAR!!

If it holds, you can always grind them down more and they will look fine. They look just like my first and only time. The only difference is that mine did not hold at all, and the thing broke off. This makes me want to try again, that was like 2 years ago. My welder looks like yours but is from sears.

Your welds will get better.

If you used a MIG instead of just a core welder i'm sure they would look nicer but it takes a lot of practice....

neil85ae86 04-16-2004 05:31 PM

Re:my first weld!! *with pics!!* (of course) *updated with weld #2*

looking at your second attempt and from hearing about the holes, I'd say you need to turn up your wire speed and/or turn down your current.

I made a downpipe out of that coated stuff and just grinded it lightly before welding without gas and my welds turned out alot better than I expected. I really don't want to crawl under my to take a pic to prove it tho. It was my second week with a wire feed and I was real proud of myself.

I was using this cheap wire and I was surprised at how fast I had to turn up the speed, the beads are fat, other wise they look good, solid.
