I know this sounds stupid but do you really need to weld a ridge? I'm thinking about making a line of jbweld around the pipe cause I don't have a welder, or maybe just duct taping a piece of wire around the pipe.

ok try this.. in theory it should work better and it costs nothing but 5 min per end...
Take a hand saw and score the surface of the tube where the coupler's connect. this will give the couplers a rougher surface to "bite" into instead of shiney steal. I'd say make the scoring about 1/2" - 1" all the way around. if that doesn't work, go get that bead weld
