Re: mustang?

Some mustang stuff:
The fox bodied mustangs 1979-1993 and the sn95 mustangs were based on the same platform. This IS an old platform but it is not the pinto one, it is the fairmont one. That being said, they pull skidpad numbers of around 0.85gs in stock form. This varies between years but certainly the later ones are there and above. IRS cobras do better.

Motorwise some highlights:

79-95 were 5.0s in the V8s (except a few horrible early 80s 4.2s!) You can have a V8 in a hatchback (GT or LX with GT having more ground effects etc, the LX having the identicle drivetrain and lighter) or a notchback (LX only) or a vert. (GT or LX). 94 Marked the beginning of the sn95 bodystyle. Best GT horsepower stock was 225. Until 92, they had forged pistons. The 94 and 95 were rated less than 225hp with a new way of measuring (full accessories on etc)

Of interest are the SVO mustangs in the mid 80s. They came with turbocharged 2.3 liter motors and put out similar numbers to the V8s of their time. They also came with intercoolers (some?) and disc brakes. they were more expensive than the V8 cars and did not sell great. They were lighter and handled better.

1993 There was also a cobra and cobra R. The R is super rare and was only sold to people with a competition liscense. It had the same drivetrain as the cobra. It was lightened and reinforced, had better brakes and lacked all luxury items (no radio, ac, power etc.) The hp rating was something like 240 for these. They did change the way they measured it so the number is on the conservative side.

1996-1998 were the first modular motor mustangs. These are the 4.6 liter motors. They are a ground up new design and share nothing with the 5.0. The 4.6 block is a good bit better than the 5.0 block. The pistons on the 4.6s were all hypereutectic. GTs made 215 hp in 96 and 97 and 225 in 98. Cobras used a similar mod motor but employed an aluminum block cast in italy by teskid (sp?) and completely different 4 valve heads. They rev easily to near 7K. They have a forged crank. The hp was 305.

1999-2004 GT motors recieved performance improved (PI) heads and hotter cams. hp was 260-280 for various editions.
The 1999 Cobra had some issues. It came with IRS and a supposed 320 hp. It was found that they dynoed lower and there was a "fix" offered by the dealers.
No 2000 cobra.

2001-2 cobras had and upgraded IRS and conservative 320 hp.

2003-2004 cobras are amazing. They have a fully built forged motor and an intercooled eaton supercharger. They are extremely conservatively rated at 390 hp. Those cars have all kinds of very easy upgrades to 500+++ hp with no internal mods.

They hold their value ok but not great. You can pick up a 96 cobra for like 6 grand. An 03 or 04 is going to be in the 20s. The value fall plateaus at some point.

Lol define "weaker." When I was looking at Mustangs I was specifically looking for a mod motor becuase they are a stronger motor. Rods, pistons and a cobra crank in a mod block is capable of 1000+ hp when the old 5.0 motors break in half around 500hp.
