might sell my civic and get a fuckin beetle
so my step sister had her mom buy this car for her like 2-3 years ago, and she was supposed to make the payments. and then she stopped making them. so my dad and stepmom took the car back and its been sitting in a garage for about 6 months. they just want to get rid of it so they dont have to carry the loan anymore. so i think im going to sell my honda and by this car.
before y'all flame its not just a gay little beetle, well maybe it is, but its the fast one. its a turbo s and is clean as ---- and has a/c and cup holders and dosent break all the time which is more then my honda. does anyone know anything about that model because i dont want to get into a maintenance nightmare with this car. im not planning on working on it at all. i just want a car to drive so i can concentrate on my chevelle and nova projects. so yeah im rambling but what do you guys think of it? http://www.forbes.com/2002/05/27/0527test.html |
Re: might sell my civic and get a fuckin beetle
I bought a brand new beetle in 2001 and sold it in 03 swearing I would never buy another newer VW. This POS was in the shop every 3 months from the get go. This is coming from someone who has owned over 25 VW's in the last 20 years - mostly aircooled and early watercooled. My neighbor across the street bought his wife a new 1.8t convertible beetle in 2004 and it ate the trans (automatic) within the first year, the top wold not close at 26,000km and had all the same electrical problems mine had. VW as a company and the dealer were not particularly helpful. If you are looking to replace a honda with a "more reliable vw" - that is not possible. Beetles specifically are chock full of electrical problems. Most VW models since 2000 are rated poorly by most resources as "not recommended". Consider this also.... the 1.8t which is in that beetle barely makes more HP than the B16 even though it has more displacement, more valves, a turbo and is about 15 years newer technology.
My advice is to run from that deal unless you really do some research on how bad of a car a new beetle is and you are okay with fixing it regularly. |
Re: might sell my civic and get a fuckin beetle
from a bodyman standpoint i have to agree that they blow ass...i've had way too many bullshit little problems with these cars...they arent designed all that great and they do lack things...i would advise to keep that honda u got...if u r tired of fixin it drop in a bone stock motor...it would be better than having to zip-tie your grill on ur beetle every few weeks...

Re: might sell my civic and get a fuckin beetle
couldn't tell you about reliability, but I tore down a brand new one to pieces and the engineering and build quality is better, what you would expect from a german car.
|
Re: might sell my civic and get a fuckin beetle
yeah i dont know ---- about them, its like 4000 under blue book and thats the only reason i was thinking about it.

Re: might sell my civic and get a fuckin beetle
01 up beetle 1.8t=178hp
94-01 integra gsr B18C1=170hp Why does a engine with a turbocharger( at 11psi) and a extra intake valve and newer technology make only 8 more hp than a older N/A engine? I'm not a engineer by any means, but something does not seem right... stick with your beater honda and concetrate on your chevelle and nova (which are both ------- sick cars). The vw is just a giant dissopointment and headache |

Re: might sell my civic and get a fuckin beetle
well i talked with my dad today and the loan has 8500 left to be paid off. the car blue books for 14000. so im going to see if i can get it for like 9000-9500, worst case scenario i can sell it to someone and turn a quick profit.
and yeah, hp is nice and all but the honda torque curve sucks. i still would have to sell my honda before i could buy another car anyways, and i probally want to much for it. |
Re: might sell my civic and get a fuckin beetle
So you want a cheap DD to drive around while you work on your other projects, why are you selling your civic for this $9k car?

The vw is just a giant dissopointment and headache all new beatles w/ the 1.8t have 150hp regardless of year except the turbo S which has 180 and a 6-speed trans. and if you tell me its the same as a golf or jetta you are wrong again a stock 180hp gti will pull on a stock GSR integra any day of the week, not by much but it will. |
Re: might sell my civic and get a fuckin beetle
how do you expect to get chicks in a beetle ??? ?
wouldn't be bad for a car to get and sell for another honda but i really couldn't drive one and not feel gay |
Re: might sell my civic and get a fuckin beetle
point being that a newer car with supposedly better technology is running around the same with a car that is much older and having 11psi being pushed into it. I was using the 180hp model because I believe he mentioned it was the s version. My friends are all into vws and such, so I get to here about this stuff alot (though it is mostly vr stuff at that ).
And on a side note, I got a ride in a MKIII with a 1.8t (the 180hp model), and it was nothing to brag about, especially after getting rapped by a stock rsx. I'm not trying to be too hateful on vws, I like the older ones, like the MKI and MKII gtis, I was merely commenting on the reliability and performance of newer volkswagons. I'll stop now before this thread becomes a vw/honda argument |
Re: might sell my civic and get a fuckin beetle
Just flip it for profit, then put money wither into the civic to make it more reliable, or into your chevelle/nova.

Re: might sell my civic and get a fuckin beetle
hmm.....i have heard about all the electrical "problems that 99 and up vw's suffer from, but my grandparents have an '01 bug, just the regular 4 cyl not the 1.8T, only time its had to go into the shop other then regular maintenance was when a crazy old bitch ran into it, i also know a guy with a '98 passat with the 1.8T not the most powerfull motor ever, but he's had no problems with reliability so far and he goes from bc to Saskatchewan aty least once a month, also it should get quite good gas mileage
|
Re: might sell my civic and get a fuckin beetle
the turbo S is a great car aside from looks and reliability. believe it or not the 180hp beetle will run circles around a GTI on a road course. one the of the best balanced FWD cars ever made, the middle of the seat bottom sits directly in the middle (front/rear) of the car, hense the huge dash.
and IDK what clown was driving the mkIII 1.8t but even with a crap 2.0 tras it will easily pull low 14's. stock mkIII GTI VR6's run 14.6-14.8 and make less power and weigh more than a 1.8t swapped mkIII the electrical problems plague the mexican built cars and mostly 2.0's at that. the 1.8t has the coil prob and MAF and coolant temp sensors ---- the bed every 20k. use an old 4cyl vanagon oil filter for extra oil cap (.6l more) and get rid of the plugs it comes with and get some ngk 7's gapped in the low 30's. let me know if you get it, i work at 42draft designs now and might be able to get you a discount on a turbo back |

Re: might sell my civic and get a fuckin beetle
he was rather competant, though he had a the ABA trans (020?). Which 2.0 are you talking about? the 2.0 8v? My A20 prelude is faster than a 2.0, though 1-2 are quicker than mine, though 3rd where my car pulls it, since the ABA has no top end. IDK, do what ever makes you happy....
|
Re: might sell my civic and get a fuckin beetle
020 trans suck balls they break way to easy. even with a rabbit GTi final drive the ratios still suck
|
Re: might sell my civic and get a fuckin beetle
yeah, he mentioned that. Apparantly the tdi trans is the way to go, being shorter gear ratios and its for a diesal, so its tuff. How much does a 1.8t cost with under 100k on the clock?
|
Re: might sell my civic and get a fuckin beetle
i got a 2001 1.8t jetta about 2 years ago with 52k miles... only drive it in the winter because i drive my civic when its above 40 degs and there isnt a foot of snow on the ground... it's a fun little stock car to drive but maintenance is terrible... in two years i've spent more on maintenance for the jetta than i did boosting the honda.

Re: might sell my civic and get a fuckin beetle
After I sold my G60 Corrado, I swore to myself that I would never get another VW...than came along my Jetta GLX VR6. When I sold that I made a promise to never again a VW again, and I meant it. I have have been VW free since, and no regrets, and thats my story.

I've had my turbo s for almost 4 years now. I didn't start ------- with it until 18 months ago, and before I put on the gt28 it was reliable as ---- and got 30+ on the freeway. Then I started ------- around, tore the motor down and built a 350ish hp motor that let go and put a nice hole in the block. They're fun as hell to drive around town, and with 101 and a k04 turbo I ran consistent high 13's on bfg's. If you haven't written it off yet, take it to a local shop and get a trial ecu reflash. It lasts like 6 hours, and it's free. As far as reliability, I've only replaced 1 coil pack, a set of plugs, and that was pretty much it for the standard ----. It's coming up on 100k now and I've raped the dogshit out of it daily. It needs new shocks now, but what do you expect after 100k? |
Re: might sell my civic and get a fuckin beetle
NOOOO BEETLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
but seriously, worked in a vw shop for a wile, the new beetle was the most comon car in there. If you do go with the beetle, be sure not to knock off the side mirrors, they are seriously doubling as a door hinge, your door may come off. (Smiley banging head against wall)/ invalid smiley |

The only vw anyone should even remotely consider is 06-up jetta, golf, gti. You can get a turbo jetta brand new fully loaded with 6-speed for $22K out the door. The 2.0T is a gem of a motor and vw is really trying to clean up their act in the reliability dept. 3-years into the 2.0T motor and my shop has YET to replace a failed engine. Not too shabby. To summarize my rant: 1.8T= FAIL 2.0T= GOOD The only thing good about a 1.8 is the fact that so many of the fuckers exist its not hard to find used parts. |
Re: might sell my civic and get a fuckin beetle
we just got one in at the car lot i work at it is a 1.8t auto i took it out and it felt like a d15 on 3psi
