looking at purchasing my first bike....

Ive been going back and forth on some bikes, and I am not really sure which one to pick.

Suzuki sv650 (Like the fact that its a known brand, about a g more than a hyosung)

Hyosung GT650 Comet (Hyosung created suzuki's motors for a while?? Cheap bike, vtwin, and the name i am not so familiar with. sweet package for price

Honda 919 (in my opinion the sickest bike. I would love to get it but i think i might be a bit much for a first bike. although i am sure i will get sick of the 650 within a month. love the CC and love knowing its a honda, and i love knowing its right around 400lbs)

if you can think of any other bikes in that category feel free to list them.
any bike basically with the whole "no facia"

like i said, first bike, i would like to spend no more than 6000 out the door. i talked to the hyosung dealer and he said he would do an 08 650 comet with a helmet out the door for 6k. i saw an 07 919 honda with basically no miles on it for 6700. if i can do a 919 for around that i would FOR SURE do that.

any ideas on what i should get

don't get a ------- hyosung. they're the daewoo of motorcycles- literally made from ---- pot steel in korea. sv650 is a very forgiving yet fun bike to ride.

only advice i can give you for your first bike is buy something you're not going to worry about dropping in your garage or laying it down, because you will do it. get something mid-1980's, japanese, and no larger than a 750 until you have a grasp on riding on the street.

and don't tell me you've "ridden dirt bikes all your life" because the street is a completely different animal compared to off road.

NINJA 250, MSF, Gear, Insurance :P

Re: looking at purchasing my first bike....

yeah even though the sv650 was my first real bike and it's really forgiving and can be really fast with a decent rider
i would say get a brand new ninja 250 they are like $3200 look like a bigger bike and you can get one for like $35 a month and then just trade it in in 1-2 years and buy somthing else
but if you want a honda and like the 919 then why not look at the 599 (same concept as the 919 but with an f4 engine)
and if you like harley's or buells you can get a brand new buell blast for $5100 out the door (i know it's really ------- expensive for a carbed, air cooled, pushrod, single with like 20hp) but if you buy one you get the msf for free (thats like $300 in savings there) and you ride it for a year and they will buy back the bike for the full price paid (not millage restrictions also)
and use the price of that bike they paid you back as a down payment on any bike on the showroom floor (a buddie of mine did that and ended up only paying like $7k for his 1125r because he paid for the blast with cash witch was cool)

Re: looking at purchasing my first bike....

You never said how much you rode before this? I'd be scared as hell to ride 900 bike starting out. I been eyeing up the 250R even though I'm not much of a sportbike guy. The body work looks like the larger Ninjas and you'll be riding forever on a tank of gas. Now if you can find one at a dealership is another thing. They've been selling like crazy and can't keep them stocked if that says anything. Don't forget with buying a new bike, you'll need insurance if your financing it and there's more loot gone from your pocket. I say pick up an older bike if your starting out cause a brand new sportbike and with that much power is just asking for trouble. I'm happy with aircooled 400 twin, 50 mpg and I stay out of the 5-0 radar cause it looks harmless....which it is anyways. I've been eyeing up Triumph's Thruxton though. Oooh la la. :y

Waste your money on a Ninja 250 and I'll come fist your mother. You'll be bored with that heap of ---- in 2 weeks flat. Trust me I wasted money on one too because it was my first bike. Go no less than 600cc.

RC51, Buell, KTM, or nothing at all.

Re: looking at purchasing my first bike....

I'm going to start 600. I don't see the point in buying a tiny bike you'll get bored with quick.

I agree with the "buy a beater" comments, thats what I plan to do. Chances are high you're going to drop it, so don't get anything nice that you wouldn't want to drop until you're sure you can handle it.

Re: looking at purchasing my first bike....

well like i said, the hyosung is about 1000bucks cheaper than anyone else and it comes with a 2year warranty and i can add on another 2 years for 300bucks.

but that honda 919 is ------- sick. i honestly have done a lot of autocrossing, so i understand the point of entry speed of turns, braking, yada yada, but i DO understand that a bike is a totally diff concept. i know i could get feel for it especially because the bike weighs just as much as other 600s. i have a thing for speed, my buddy bought an 07gsxr 600 and sold it about 4 months after he bought it because he got so bored with the speed. thats why i want this 919. its just the best package....

insurance wise, at geico for the 08 gt650 hyosung it would be $245 a year or something and for a 2007 honda 919 it was a more than double, around 550 or so. which is around 45 a month. i have 6k cash ready to buy anything. i just dont want to make a mistake and buy 1. an off brand bike 2. a slow bike 3. obviously if i am spending my money i want to get what i want.

the 599 looks great and is probably what i should get. thanks for bringing that bike to my attention, i really never saw that cc motor. i will deff have to do a lil more research.... thanks for your opinions though

Does the Kawi ZX6R 636cc interest you any? 2005 models and up have a bad ass body styling. Don't know if that is your thing or not.

No motor is really exactly 600/1100/etc cc, they just round it to an even number...but yeah don't buy an off-brand bike.

+1

I'll beast on dirt. Streetbikes and riding them on the street still makes my heart jump into my throat on occasion.

Re: looking at purchasing my first bike....

Go atleast 600. when youre bored of it gear the ---- out of it and enjoy 10krpm at 80mph. In 1k miles i got tired of my 636 and sold it, now i want an R1. ---- all that weight bullshit, theres no curvys around here and its all freeway, so straightline power is where its needed.

A guy at work recently picked up a Yamaha R6(04 or 05?? model) for $4k...I rode the bike at lunch the other day and it moves pretty good. Especially compared to the old ZX-6's I used to ride when I was younger.

Re: looking at purchasing my first bike....

Buy a used name brand bike, not ching chong meow. I'm sure a honda with 40K would last longer that a brand new ching chong bike

off road = much harder

johnny, you're a ------- idiot. i've had my endorsement since i was 16. how is off road harder? are their people in cars yakking on cell phones and changing lanes without looking, constantly having to be aware of cars and constantly having to scan the roadway for gravel/sand/any deviation from pavement for which your tires are not designed to traverse off road?

oh, and you're wrong about the hyosung too.

Christ you're obviously wrong. Off road is way ------- harder, I mean you have to watch for renegade trees and those sneaky ass possums ::)

you can die just as easily riding very fast in the woods as you can riding very fast on the street.

yes there are no other cars to deal with, but i'm talking very granular.

it is much more difficult to ride fast off road than on the street. i've done both, and riding on the street is much much easier and takes much less effort.

anyone who argues against this hasn't done both.

its very irritating to hear idiots get on their soapbox about riding on the street, like its something ------- special or hard.

Jorsher 07-19-2008 05:09 PM

Re: looking at purchasing my first bike....

I think rs' point is that off-road you have a bit more obstacles and not as much traction and not quite the smooth surface. "More dangerous" because it's easier to screw up.

All yall's others are talking about the idiots on the road and regular driving "dangers" that make it more dangerous. "More dangerous" because of the idiots and road conditions.

Now can you folks quit bitching back and forth?

how many people died last year in off road dirt bike accidents? i guess when the word "harder" was used, it should have been "harder to stay alive".

there are a shitload more off road riders than on road. statistically, dirt is safer.

J.H. doesn't know ----.

i'm not talking about dangers or obstacles or any other bullshit like that.

i'm talking about the skill required to ride fast. its much EASIER to ride fast on the street than in the dirt. end of story

JoshMO 07-19-2008 07:02 PM

Re: looking at purchasing my first bike....

I have to disagree with you there. Statistically there are a ---- ton more ON ROAD riders than off. I'll try to dig up some stats.

Edit: ---- that. there is too much to copy and paste and I'm getting off here. GOOGLE it

ask johnny, he knows everything about nothing. there's a reason no one likes him.

i've ridden the sv, it was a fun, peppy, yet forgiving bike. the 599 would be fun as well, but not as nimble or forgiving.
