Get a monster truck, road cars are fun for about 20 minutes. The really fast one are just that, very fast. It sounds a lot cooler than it is, anything over 30mph and you are lucky if you can even go straight. You will need a ton of room and the surface will have to be very smooth, no cracks, bumps, grooves and swept. Adn if you car carrying any speed and you hit a pole or a curb (it is much easier than it sounds to do this) be prepared to replace lots of parts.
Monster trucks can be used anywhere, are much more durable, and a ton more fun.
Search for some videos of each, also hit the savage message boards. Some good stuff there.
No matter which you get, just be warned that the initial investment of the car/truck is just a small portion of what you will end up spending. I don't even want to think about what I have spent on them.

No kidding, I end up spending at least $50 every time I drive mine from hitting/breaking ----. Busting differentials, wheels, brakes, driveshafts, body/chassis(if you call it that) parts, buring up and rebuilding servo's. I got a Duratrax axis, kind of a piece of ---- for parts since its discontinued but best of both worlds, its a 4wd buggy and it still hauls *** on the road.
not to mention the fuel costs about $20-$25 a gallon, although a gallon of that ---- will last you quite awhile.
Test a few out and see what you like, talk to the nerds at the hobby shop they will tell you whats a good bang for you're buck.

Re: looking to get in the rc market
I personally owned about 10 high end cars and trucks. Personally on a small budget anything HPI is great. The 1/10th scale cars and trucks from HPI, plus the parts...Anyhow trust me on this.
Now if you wanna get into 1/8th scale onroad cars the check out Serpent..
My very favorite of all was my 1/5th scale FG onroad. Full disk breaks, RWD, tons of ----. 2 stroke.
