The manual will provide you with what the default password is set to. Use that to log in...

Oh, and to secure the system, you'll need to enable "WEP", and set some encryption keys. You get to pick the keys. Use 26 digits to make up a number and set encryption key #1 to that number. Then enter the same number on your computers that will be connecting to the wireless router. You can also change the default SSID to something else to make it evern more secure.

Craig

Update...

I googled "WRT54G User Manual" and this was the first link - http://apparat.conagri.se/pdm/10696l...RT54G_bren.pdf Page 14 shows that UserName is left blank and the Password = admin. Try that.

HMTguy 12-24-2006 10:19 PM

Re: Linksys ownez me

default login is leaving user name blank, password is admin.

mycrx 12-24-2006 10:20 PM

Re: Linksys ownez me

try typing admin for the password to access your router settings.

unless im doing something really wrong the router is a p.o.s cause my laptop wont connect to it half the time when the router is right next to it. all im getting from the software is it will run me through how to hook it up (the router), then i click next and it will say its reading the system, then ask for a password (no username) then it will say its loading and go back to the password window, this thing is about to get thrown out the ------- window, im back to stealing my neighbors wireless till this thing works :8

thanks boost im checkin it out right now.

Welcome to the club. Trust me, I know your frustration. If I could get ahold of a tech support guy in person I would probably cave his skull in and dance around his dead body singing xmas carols. :7

I never had problems with the password. I just put "admin" in all undercase letters and left the username blank and it worked for me.

If you want to hear some bullshit, I got the fucker working flawlessly, turned the computer off, restarted and the god damn adapter just vanished off the computer like it was never there and the computer has no idea WTF it is anymore. :S It's now an "unknown USB device" even though 2 minutes prior to that it was totally installed and working fine. :3

Now I know why I sold my Cisco shares. :7

ive seen those that would be nice, im stuck with whatever my presario 2200 came with. lol home made antenna sounds sweet is there a write somewhere on it?

Boost ive searched around for product reviews it looks like were not the only ones that got owned by linksystem. im retarded when it comes to computer so that adds to the equation.

yea boost my usb wifi adapter is like that, the driver they sent me is dick itd blue screen of death my laptop when i plugged it in and out, i went to the webpage and got updated drivers and it was still fucked up just doing different ---- like saying unknown usb device and ---- so i was like wtf and reinstalled a fresh copy of windows with absolutly nothing on the hard drive, sometimes when you have tons of ---- programs conflict and things do not mesh together as fine as youd like them being a linksys router im sure there is hella support for the thing but them asshats take forever :1

ps for a writeup just google homemade wifi antenna, seriously i just took a metal strainer like 10 inches round, and tied my usb adapter in the center and pointed, using netstumbler i can see the signal streghth and ----, no doubt its at least 40% better and stronger, no dropping or nothing when i used it, gamed just fine and dl'd ---- good too, now that ive got a router in my room i dont need the neighbors network and i just get a little bit better now and the router is right next to me, go too www.rokland.com that guys kool and knows his ----, i bought my senao usb from there at a good price, good luck.

The funny thing is the computer i was trying to use it on has not a god damn thing installed on it with a fresh copy of XP pro and this pile of worthless ---- still didn't want to work. I think it has alot to do with the computer that's receiving the wireless signal because I just swapped the router and modem to the room with the older computer and am using the wireless adapter on my computewr and even with a "low" signal it works just as fast as it did connected straight to the modem. No problems at all. :S If it never fucks up again I might change my mind about linksys, but I know that's not going to be the case. :3

If you still cant connect to the router, try unplugging it from the wall for 30 seconds and plugging it back in (power cord)...Linksys is usually a very solid company, and what I use most of the time. Generally, all of the major networking companies suck major dick, and Linksys usually does it the least often

Not from what I've experienced and read. Seems like tons of people are having all kinds of problems with linksys. :l

a direct link is gonna be faster because with wireless the signal has to travel and it will lose strenght but not that bad, it shouldnt read low when you are close to it, i had a 8ft usb to usb with my adapter on the end and id still get good signal quality, but yea id say just hook a cat5 striaght to the modem ---- it....

well what i would say is that linksys isnt as easy for the average user to setup, however they always work better in my experiences..

altho i have been using buffalo routers lately reflashed with dd-wrt, other than the pain in the ass to flash them, they are awesome...ive setup 3 of them alone this week

You would think, but it doesn't seem that way. I have the adapter stuck to the wall like 6ft up and the antenna pointing out. Seems to work....for now. :l Just don't look at it or touch it.

So what you're trying to say is it's glitchy and a pain in the ass for non-webgeeks to use. :1

well kinda...there arent really any sweet companies that do consumer networking. there is no ultra reliable, ultra easy, etc company just a few companies that are medeocre at some things...in my book, linksys works the best, but who knows...others might find it more dificult...also for the user/pass field, try admin for both

NetGear seemed to work good for me. It came with software that included drivers which installed hassle free. My linksys adapter didn't come with ----. :3 If I would have know that I would have bought NetGear.

I had to call Linksys becasue the rounter was conflicting wiht my DSL modem. Router worked perfectly right out of the box. So did the DSL modem.

Most common problem they said becasue most modems are setup up on on the same IP address. you have to change either the router IP or the DSL modem IP address to avoid the conflict.

Easy fix after they told me that.

Otherwise my compact wireless/wired G router works great.

Another thing that you guys should be aware of is that WEP encryption blows big time. There are some easy programs out there that can crack the encryption in less than 3 minutes. FBI demonstrated this awhile ago.

Use WPA2 ASK encryption. Much more robust.

Well, they are the #1 best selling commercial brand by far, and, well, the average commercial end user is about as tech savvy as you are. :(

I have two Linksys WRT54G's and a Motorola WR850G running DD-WRT, which is about ten times as complex as the stock firmware, big fat two thumbs up for them. :6
