Lexan windows

How much would it cost for lexan windows? And do you buy them precut or do you get sheets of lexan that you fit yourself? and where do you buy it?

lexan is a very very strong replacment for windows. its mainly used for house windows but is used on other various things such as speaker boxes, tv's, submarines, boats, and even robots ;D its pricey and comes in many many different thicknesses and sizes. i owuld recomend replacing your windows with lexan becasue its very very light and almost shatterproof if not bullet proof as wel,l if itsthick enough. and no its not tint lol........

Are you aware of the kind of car you need to have before even thinking about having lexan windows? What is the reason you want to do that to your car?

You should take that big heavy lump of domestic metal out of your engine bay and put in a real (honda) engine :8

I don't know the exact weight savings you would be looking at, but unless your car is a stripped down shell for weekend money races, I don't think there is going to be enough reason to do lexan. It's not cheap to do it right, and I would imagine its not cheap to undo either. If you plan on racing any street based class at a sanctioned event, you're pretty much going to disqualify yourself by having the lexan. It's not allowed in street classes. I could see how they might not give you a problem in the bracket classes, but that's really not the point.
I'm trying to break this down for you. It's sorta like taking a 15 second full interior civic and buying skinnies for the back. Although it wouldn't hurt your time, you really aren't at the level that calls for it. Let see, uh, it's kinda like a completely stock civic running 16's, and the kid is in the pits tearing out his interior. lol. I hope these analogies are working.
There is a certain sex to the look of lexan windows. The closest I've had is an aftermarket passenger glass made by a shitty company and it had waves in it. :D If you really want the look, I think nopi sells "rivet tape" to go around the glass windows. :-X Ok, I've said all I can.

Re: Lexan windows

Stealth's comment by far makes the most sense. If its not a stripped out drag car, you'd be wasting your time on lexan windows. And yes a full set for the CRX costs around $600 or more, and thats without them being put in. And to the guy that owns the focus, you can pretty much get which ever size window you need.... just have to contact a distributor or a seller.

Just because drag cars have lexan windows doesnt mean they'll help you that much if you have a 300 lbs beast of a friend sitting next to you and you're car already weighs 2600lbs+. Easiest way too reduce weight on your car is to get rid of things from the car.

I dunno, dropping 55 lbs from the rear hatch on a CRX alone is a huge chunk of weight. I know people driving around with the stuff. *shrug*

A panel of 0.065" lexan, big enough to do the rear hatch on a CRX, is $35 shipped to the door. You'll need $15 worth of tools and supplies to cut it and fit it. Your hatch will weigh 18 lbs when finished. The quarter windows are a non-issue... using thin super flexy 0.065", there is no more than a two ounce weight difference.

Real marguard lexan is some skrill, but if you run the regular stuff it lasts pretty well. Plan on changing it out every year on a street car that sits outside. Don't plan on using it for a front windshield.

I was looking on nopi and they sell flexalite windows under the "window kit" category. Kind of expensive I guess, but it wouldn't be too bad to do just your hatch window to save some weight

Reading comprehension owns you.

I just found out that this is the good stuff; it's for the build your own plane aviation crowd, and they do not allow substandard windows or the plane isn't allowed to fly.

Re: Lexan windows

I saw that post, but I don't know how you'd do your own rear glass on an eg hatchback-- its pretty curved-- unless the lexan is flexible enough to do it? No experience w/it

Netsearch drape forming.

Heatgun + your glass = perfection.

Re: Lexan windows

I used a sheet and made a windshield for a high-mileage car I worked on in highschool, it was like a 4x5 sheet for like $65. you could bend the ---- and everything, crystal clear and strong as ----, i think it was like 3/8 inch thick. worked great, prolly could make side windows out of it pretty easy but not worth the money.

Re: Lexan windows

i tihk there is another company that sells them besides Flexalite and they are alot cheaper. i think i read on HT that the front windows will roll down.

Re: Lexan windows

Lexan should only be used on a full drag car, ie, something that holds you in (racing seat/harness)

There is a reason we have something called safety glass, its to keep your dumb noggin from going SPLAT! on your new lexan window in the event of a big accident its also there so emergency crews can break it and get you out of the car, say you were to roll and they couldnt open the doors and your car was on fire...I'm sure they would appreciate you having lexan windows to make their job of saving your ass that much easier. ::)

There is some exceptions, like said above, the rear hatch of a CRX, or even the rear 1/4 windows...so long as nobody sits there.
