Just When You Think--

it can't get any worse---RANT

After havin a 401k since 1983 and looking forward to nice retirement, thats out the window, because of the stock market
est. loss, a little over 200k

A home that was paid off but took out a loan to help my oldest son and his family buy one, ( that was part of his inheritance )
Home value 1 year ago 255k---Today 130k

Go into work yesterday with 6 other people, 4of us laid off by 9am.
I had worked there 9 1/2 years. I just turned 55 a few weeks back and now I have to go and look for a new job and start over, -----ME
The company I workrd for has 6 stores here in Colo. and 2 in Neb. and are laying off 3-4 people at each location in our division ( irrigation )
We were the largest distributer for TORO & RAINBIRD supplies

The thing that hits me the hardest is we can't finish our father & son build and we only have a little ways to go. The motor is done, waiting on a
few suspension parts and thats done, I have the turbo,wg, bov, IC, Hondata, prologger, all wiring harness etc. The only things left are new fuel system and lines to convert to AN, AN lines and fittings for and including catch can, turbo manny, down pipe and dump tube and a few othe little things

Just a little RANT

On one hand, yeah he is. On the other hand the dude is young and doesn't know ----. All he knew is the bank would give him more money, and the bank was the entity that should have known better.

Re: Just When You Think--

The sad fact is retirement age is going to be 70 unless your government employee. Sorry to hear about the news pretty common these days but the reality was the growth of the economy the last 8 years has been nothing but printing money and handing out more credit, the first no no in Economic growth.

Stick with the race car you'll be glad you did. Once times get better you guys can finish it. Kinda how my drag car is its a little at a time, you'll get there

Has far has people saying dont spend your money kinda foolish. Save of course but the only way to help your local community not wal-mart is to support small business. Nothing wrong with going out once a month for a couple beers and pizza at the local pizza place. Spending 50 bucks on something.

There is a sense of balance people dont have these days. You have to spend somewhat thats how the ball keeps rolling but buy within your means. If your company on the other hand is handing out pink slips weekly start saving your cans.

Re: Just When You Think--

Sorry to hear this Mark, thats pretty rough. It's shitty to have to look for employment at that age, but with a CDL and experience it should be fairly easy to find at least an OKAY paying job though right? At least to hold ya over until the economy turns around a bit? It's gonna come back around again, the world can't afford for the consumer ----- that America is to go under. I'm in Aspen til spring at least, so let me know if you need a weekend drinking escape, I'll pay for the booze, and theres an extra room for you to crash in. And don't give up on the build, I still need to catch a ride in it.

EG-prince 11-22-2008 11:44 PM

Re: Just When You Think--

I'm not kidding about free booze and lodging. Take me up.

In for the edit.
The more I think about this, the more it pisses me off. OK, maybe I've been drinking a bit. But seriously, Mark here is a good man, a hard working, middle class man, and he is getting fucked right now. Something wrong is fundamentally wrong with society/government/american capitalism and the way things are being managed when a hard working, honest man is stripped of his source of income and retirement potential

im sure you'll find a job after obama raises corporate taxes 10%

maybe you can work in one of his planned 2.5 million new government jobs. until there is no money to pay for those, but thats ok they'll just print more money ;)

Re: Just When You Think--

Luckily I don't have ---- for a "retirement" so there is nothing to "lose" :1

Everybody is fucked right now. The only things that can save your ass is a savings and the motivation to find a new job and bust ass trying to keep it. I see alot of people bitching about not getting enough hours to pay their bills, but when they show up to work they don't do ---- and complain about having to work. ::) I wanted to go out and get shitfaced lastnight, but I had to work today. I made it to work, got ---- taken care of and my bills are paid. I'd really like to buy a new vehicle right now, but it would suck to jump into another payment in such uncertain times so I'm probably going to hold off, which in turn costs the dealership or person I was going to buy from money and the bank I was going to take a loan from money and the state tax money....etc...etc. :S

As soon as we get consumer confidence back up(however the ---- that's going to happen) we will be in good shape again. People need to spend money to get the ball rolling again, but they also need to be making it before they spend it. :S

I hope you put some money away for a rainy day. I wonder how many Americans have/had a savings account before this ---- happened? It might not be a bad idea to start putting money away for the next time this happens.....and it will happen again. Who will learn from this and be prepared for next time? :-\

Re: Just When You Think--

they put money away inside the mattress or that secret compartment in the dresser, but nowadays, who can trust the dollar anyway? might as well take your savings and buy a chunk of uranium. You're going to get cancer anyway, and uranium will never lose its value as long as there are bad guys to blow the ---- out of

yea saving money doesn't make much sense when the dollar is going to be worthless in the future.

buying hard assets would be better, but the govt will probably just take those away from you if ---- gets bad enough to where the dollar is worthless.

buy firearms and ammunition.

Gold is still looking pretty decent (comparatively). I'm glad I started buying gold with some spare funds a few years back. Now if the dollar completely tanks (think 1/100 of its value) I'll at least have some gold to get me by.

Re: Just When You Think--

Man I feel for you, starting to see and hear that same ------- ---- more and more at work. People loosing cars because they were making all this money and based their life style on all the overtime "we USED to average around 34-40hrs per payperiod" and now they cant afford anything because they lived above their means. Company isnt hiring, people not showing up for work because lask of cash to pay their car payments, company sticking the rest of us with overtime thats a HAVE TO HAVE for the customer"toyota". It's a panic one minute with not having people to work on some lines and a stress the next about not having a job or where to put people to work so the BIG guys wont move them out the door type of thing. I'm comfortable financially but not the greatest by any means. But with fidelity holding my 401k in their hands and me bouncing %ages around daily, I'm still loosing mad amounts of money even in the lowest of all risks. Anyone know how if you can roll 401K into a IRA with Fidelity. Man I beter get on the horn with them monday and pull everything except the money market accounts

Re: Just When You Think--

Thanx people for the uplifting comments, and Evan, I just might take you up on the offer. I have never lived above my means, that is the way I was raised and I proberly never will. I still drive a 95 dodge sprit and have the 89 hb for fun. Jerrod (my son ) and I were talking about the situation and since he is still at home and making good money he is going to help out when needed. Scraping the build is just a last resort, if anything we will keep the engine since it is really the only thing finished and poss. part out everything else including the ef. We do have a 95 eg that the engine can go in, but that is the last resort, only if everything else fails just like the Goverment promises.
The only thing that really bothers me is looking for a new job with the benifits I had. Jerrod is going to see if he can put me on his insurance through his work ( comcast ) but I don't know if they will except me as a dependant. It would be somthing differant. But hell, if the FAGS can get insurance for their lovers why can't a son who still lives at home get insurance for his dad. This would be a excel. court battle with a good lawyer. Any insurance people out there that could inlightin me on this situation, could it work

Yeah, because that will happen someday soon. :1 Firearms and ammo, yeah that sounds like a good way to pay the bills. :1 You gotta come out of that cave and start living in the real world. no he doesn't

sooner or later you will come around.

what line do you draw where its not worth working anymore? i already pay 48.1% of my income in tax straight out of my paycheck. not counting everything else.

You gotta buy a house or pop out a kid if you want some tax breaks. They only take 15% from me and I should break even at the end of the year with just writing off the house. I'm not sure if I believe your 48% anyways. Are you counting in state tax, fed tax, med tax and SS tax to get that %? :S

Let's say you make $40/hour at 40 hours/week=$1600. If they taxed you 48% you would be left with $832. I find it hard to believe they would be taxing you $768 a week. :1

i own a house. you can only write off mortgage interest. why would i NOT count the other taxes off my paycheck? ::)

28.5% federal income tax
9% state income tax
6.75% ss tax
1.65% medicare tax
1.65% medicaid tax

i forget what the actual medicaid tax rate is. i know its really close to medicare. when i figured it out using exact numbers it was 48.1%

obama wants to get rid of the bush tax cuts. that means i'll pay a nice 30% income tax. THANKS FOR THE HELP.

why do i only deserve half my money? if taxes get any higher i will pay off my bills and quit my job.

Exactly.

What he's also not telling us is that he's going to get back THOUSANDS of dollars at the end of the year because he doesn't know how to fill out a tax form to claim more deductions so he doesn't have to give the big bad government an interest free loan all year long. :1

No ----. I bet you pay about $900/month in interest. That should add up to a pretty big ------- write-off at the end of the year and I bet the big bad government is going to give you a pretty big break for it, but I bet you won't be bitching about the government when they do that. :1 $762x52 weeks in a year=$39,936 a year you "CLAIM" to be paying in taxes. they steal half of it, give me back 1/4th and tell me to be happy. nice.

why are you defending this huge taxation. paying 28.5% federal income is IS WRONG. paying 9% state income tax is wrong.

how can you possibly think paying that much money is ok? we fought the revolutionary war over 3% income tax.

here is obama's economic plan, spend trillions of tax dollars to "put people to work". he is a socialist like FDR. who gave us the ongoing debacle socialism security. $650 billion dollars a year and growing every year. the cost of the iraq war EVERY YEAR.

who is going to pay for these "public works" projects when everyone "works" for the govt.
