This picture threw me off. It looks like the transmission side of most crankshafts. I guess the VR6 just has a ridiculously large front snout. :1

I thought it seemed pretty asinine to put the timing chain at the rear of the engine.

The procedure assumes that the transmission, clutch, flywheel, upper intake manifold and other small parts (coilpack, TB, airbox ...) have been removed from the car and that other steps necessary to remove these have also been performed (front end of car raised, battery disconnected, etc). The major stuff on VWs are good, but working on anything is ass backwards, and will lead you to sell a perfectly good new 2002 for 6k$ just so you dont have to work on it. Its like they engineered the car to never be taken apart again. My own personal hell would be a never ending line of passats, Jetta's and GTI's that need sparkplugs and clutches replaced.

I've owned Mazda GTX's, Merkur Xr4Ti's, 2 Integra's, a Dodge Shadow, a slew of Escort's and Proteges, random trucks, and a 2 civics, and a VW Bora (think Jetta), and if there is one thing I have learned is that while at first the Jetta was a confusing work of art/pain in the ass (and I was a diesel mechanic!) when in comes to engineering, after patroling VWVortex and buying the shop manual for the car, I love my Bora Vr6, it just requires abit more maintenance...

Pros of a jetta VR6: Nice looking, Vr6 when fed forced air will waste nearly anything near it, engines are still solid after 160,000 miles of beating to it like a bastard child, repairs are cheap if parts are bought online, faster than most cars, can get good gas mileage*, nice flat power band- 175hp, 175 lb-ft of torque from the 12V Mk4 Vr6, 15.3 sec 1/4 mile with intake and engine mounts, most people think they are slow...

Cons: Costly if you buy parts at the dealership, if you don't know what you are doing, or have no patience repairs are insane, VR6 N/A will max out at around 250hp, no matter what you do, something about the way that the head doesn't flow enough or something under N/A conditions, most people think that they are slow...

I own a 1.8t, there is no ------- way in hell that guy pulled 280 out of a k03 turbo...or even a k03s. ---- even a K04 maxs out at 250. And 12's? was he sitting on a bucket with no roof? Also stock awp's(2002-2005) have put 160whp.

D-man....wrong again. Yes the 1.8t is easier and cheaper to get power out of but 225 from a chip isnt happening. Maybe 200 with revo and boost set to 9(25+psi)

Alot of people hate on volkswagen and dont really get to know the cars. I've been into honda's and prefer vw mostly because of the people. No body steals our ---- and for the most part everyone is quite helpful. I cant even think of how many times i've been saved from a tight jam by someone i never met, but the helped me out just cause we both drove dubs.

Easiest way to do the timing chains is to pull the motor and do it while its on the cherry picker.

Also lock cylinders were a known problem with mk3(94-99.5) have yet to hear of a problem with mk4s

Also what is hard about the sparkplugs? are you ------- retarded? Jesus the first car i ever really got my hands dirty with was a mk3 gti 2.0 aba. Even then sparkplugs was nothing more then a 15min job.

These cars are no harder to work on than anyother car. Some things are stupid easy and others are a bit more of a problem.
