Default Jetta VR6?

I don't know much about Volkswagens. My wife has been wanting a Jetta for quite some time now. I found a 2002 with a VR6 and all options. Her birthday is next week and was going to pick it up for her as a present.
It has 120,000 miles and they want $7,000 for it. I drove it last week and it seemed like it ran good. Is there anything to look out for when buying these? Is this engine proven to be reliable? I've always heard that the engines run forever but everything else connected to them is junk. Any owners?

i personally like the 1.8t better the manual vr6 just seems to be geared weirdly, and the 1.8t seems to have allot more potential
i have seen 1.8t's with boltons, meth injection, and a boost controller running 26psi run low 12's on street tires (spinning 1,2,and some of 3rd going through the traps at about 108 or so) i think the one i saw at the track the guy said he paid 5k for it and put $1500 in it and it made like 280whp (stock is 180 at the crank so about 150 or so at the wheels)

essentially cornfuzed is an idiot. i would never buy a mk 4 volkswagen, electrical issues out the ***. Sure its german engineered but most of the engineering is garbage and if it's good then it is fucked up by the beaners in mexico when they assemble it. Parts are also very expensive.

I have a friend who owns one of the anniversary edition GTi's(I know it comes factory with Recaro seats, the wheels might be an upgrade as well). He autoX's that car EVERY opportunity he gets and has had for the last two years. I think it's been holding up pretty well. And it is his daily driver.

Thanks for all of the replies everyone. This car will most likely stay stock. Although a turbo VR6 would be ****
She will just be using it for transportation to and from work and where ever else she goes. Right now she is driving an Integra that has about 250,000 miles on it. The clear coat is starting to break down, it needs new axles and wheel bearings. Not much work but i think she will appreciate something newer.

I'll look into this. I bet it would be a bitch to do with how cramped the engine bay is.
