JD's assault on a 50+ mpg daily driver.

OK, since I signed up at ecomodder.com my hamster wheel has been spinning overtime. Here's the current plan:

- HX head
- A6 bottom end with GX pistons, LS rods
- ZC/Si hybrid gearbox with .702 5th gear so I can go turtle racing the 14 second club AND get my mpg on
- 14point7.com el cheapo kit wideband used in a closed loop lean burn setup in conjunction with eCtune
- My beater is dead except for short trips across town due to clutch/engine issues, driving the gfs car and she is getting progressively pissed so the clock is ticking and this will be done PRONTO
- ---- BAC and the ---- ass pistons he ripped me for, and his refusal to make things right

Currently the bottom end is assembled, the head is at the machine shop and due back next week, I have the ZC gearbox and .702 5th but am looking for an Si FD, 14point7.com kit is working and tested good but not installed in the vehicle, and Tony Cote is a sack of lying ---- as I have the FS thread where he sells the fucked up detonation scarred 75.5 mm pistons "because I am too lazy to send a block off to get overbored" and then a week later is selling a 75.5 mm overbored block.

Anyway, I don't have pictures of anything and no real intentions of taking any pics in the near future. I imagine I'll manage some shitty cell phone pics of dubious quality at some point, but no promises. I was counting on HMT ---- talk to fill the void in the interim. Just one thing... make sure it's quality ---- talk, none of that Eclipse faggot vs 420A faggot cum soaked gum flapping, got it?

You should have got a K-series. I'm glad you decided to go all-motor. I get tired of seeing these brainless turbo setups, it's good to see you using your intelligence and fabbing skills to build a uber-1337 all-motor setup.

Fail.

Show me a K-series breaking 30 mpg and I'll show you LIES. BTW, I have a K24A1 crate motor if anyone wants it, I couldn't find a douchwhistle to sell me a gearbox for less than $150 so goddamn if I am running the pile of ----.

No. Success.

It was my lazy, half-assed attempt at talking ----, and it got a reaction.

I'll trade you a complete SI transmission, and A6, for that K24A1 :)

Y5 head rocks. I just have it engage vtec above 67% throttle regardless of rpm; it loves boost too.

Really? I thought it would be lower rpm-oriented, since they are rated at 44 mpg in the 5 spd heavysut HX.

It's basically a GX, FWIW, and the CR will be 12.5:1. I am strongly considering a T25 at some point but I don't think I'll be able to stay with 87 octane if I go that way. Maybe E85, if we get more than one pump in the county?

Don't know?

Make your guess and I'll make mine, whoever is right gets $100 from the other.

Hmm..........I guess that they were fucked due to detonation.

Tom-Guy 06-18-2008 11:24 PM

Re: JD's assault on a 50+ mpg daily driver.

They are visibly detonation scarred on the quench pads, the ring lands are slopped out, they are beat and represented as 100% fine nothing wrong with them + being sold because he was too lazy/pigheaded to send a block to the machine shop and wanted some stock bore pistons. A week, week and a half later he has a FS thread for his freshly honed 75.5mm block. I broach the subject of the piston's condition immediately, he wanted me to file a claim with USPS payable to me, WHICH ALMOST A YEAR LATER I CAN ASSURE YOU IS A GUARANTEED WAY TO NEVER GET PAID, as a number of vendors have since discussed with me when I broached the subject.

god damn if i wasnt talking to chris yesterday about a vtec-e/closed loop wideband/forged internal/uber-lean burn build

...i got 34.5 mpg in my turbo ls and it really got me thinking about what i could do for mpg if i really tried to build something with that in mind. Keep us updated on your progress so i can copy it and say it was all my idea later.

It was good at every RPM range. Gotta love those roller rockers too to rev it a bit higher if you want, although I really don't.

I used it before on a stock Z6 block, now it's on a 7.5:1 CR vitara/TT Z6 block. It's still awesome. I never had any of the Y series timing issues that you talked about a lot either.

stillnoturbo 06-18-2008 11:40 PM

Re: JD's assault on a 50+ mpg daily driver.

Jon, didn't my engine I sold you have a Z6 timing belt on it? I dind't have a problem getting the timing figured out. I just unbolted the Z6 head, bolted on the y5 head and plopped the belt back on and it was good to go. Does the head have the z6 cam gear or the matching y5 cam gear? It's been quite awhile since I've had that engine. It was the only sohc vtec engine I had that you could cleary tell when vtec was activated. I would go back on forth cause there was a pretty big change compared to when the Z6 head was on it and from my D15b in my old hatch.

Yea I'm still using a z6 belt, still whatever cam came on it. I would assume it's the y5 cam, but I never really cared since the timing was fine. Yea you can definitely hear a deeper intake tone when vtec is engaged. Doesn't put you back in the seat or anything but at least you know it's out of economy mode then.

I think you need some water injection instead of E85...

when your done you need to make it really aerodynamic to get even better mpg out of it. and draft anything that moves.

i got a ek dx trans has bearing noise but works fine i drove the car jsut the beaner wahnted it replaced so i changed it all syncros perfect wanted to tear them out to fix my y8 trans 3rd gear but never had teh time any way 120 shipped!!!!!!

you need egr to run super lean like the stock hx 8) super lean +egr = safe egt's or water injection i was planning to build someting like this since my turbo vitara motor used a hx head i was thinking of vaporizing the fuel by having glow plugs in the manifold after the injectors

gasoline has an auto ignition point of 475*F and ive seen a glow plug being heated outside an engine and that fucker was cherry red probally like close to 1000*F so im pretty sure that wouldnt work

so you paid 120 dollars for 469 dollar pistons and they weren't perfect ??? go figure ::) this is america ya get what ya pay for ... fyi he did think those pistons were still good cause all it did was spin a rod bearing .. and the detonation is prolly from when he got a whack ass xenocron basemap that barely made his car drivable ... pig rich at idle and lean as ---- anything past 4k we then put a vafc back in it and the car ran awesome for 6 months and then it spun a rod bearing..

You're a ------- tool. He flat out lied and scammed JD. Who the ---- cares how the pistons got fucked up in the first place? Now you're trying to blame Xenocron?

lol i dont think he knew.. they are a forged piston that was pulled out of a running block that spun a rod bearing .. i would assume they were good to

go ---- yourself for not tuning the car dumb ass. detonation on a basemap is prob from incorrect timing at the dizzy

there are 4 of them, he mangaed to pull them and pack them and not look at them at all?. ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) Dont make exuses for your boyfriend.
