Intake manifold

Is there any guidelines to follow when making a HM intake manifold?

ie: the size of the runners must be below a certain size or if they can be too big,

Do they have to be made of alloy or can i just make them with stainless? ???

Thanks
Matt

Might have a hard time welding a plenum or runners out of stainless on a Aluminum head flange, heh (what most people use) otherwise you will have to make a steel head flange, and find steel injector bungs. Most HM intake manifolds are custom aluminum made, I've had a couple on my setups.

Heres a recent one we did for a H22.

And here is beaus Race B16a intake manifold, just like my old one but he welded the inside of his.

Hope that gave you some ideas.

This looks like the kinda one i want ;D Thanks for the pics, its nice to get a straight good answer for once!

I know know i need a old stock B16 IM to cut up and play with :p

Does it matter how long the runners have to be? can they be too long/short? Also can they be too wide or shall i stick to stock diameters?

I'm fucked if im paying $300 for a IM that looks so easy to build!

Thats the spirit of HMT!!

Re:Intake manifold

Shorter runners are better for boost, and you want to stick with about the same size as the stock ones. You will have to flatten them out to shape like an oval so it matches up with the stock ones.

If you are going to "HACK" the b16a intake manifold to make your own (like shown) it will HAVE to be made out of aluminum, Not stainless. You cannot weld stainless steel metal to aluminum.

Notice how all the pictures of the intakes I showed have no throttle brackets. reason is, stock throttle brackets are mild steel, and you cannot weld them to the intake manifold. In this picture you can see we tried a spot weld but it ended up breaking off, I usually build a little bracket off the fuel rail.

Too bad Jeff isnt in California, you might get more people bugging the ---- out of him to make their intake manifold or other welding jobs. *THUMBS UP* on the welds... FUCKEN CLEAN!

dam those are so sweet....I wanna make something...something cool. I think im gonna create a HM throttle body set-up, then put a turbo to that. Hummm???

Re:Intake manifold

any thoughts on the velocity stack effect... most aftermarket intake manifolds have the runners sticking up into the plenum with velocity stacks....I'm sure there is a reason for it.??!!

Re:Intake manifold

go here http://www.villagephotos.com/pubbrow...elected=823546 for pics of the one i made and just installed. the runners are tapered. the air horn lead-ins for the runners should also help with velocity. i also incorporated the iacv into my design. i didn't want to scrap my stock im so i cnc'd all the flanges i needed.

Re:Intake manifold

Jeff, what size is the internal on those plenums? 3-4 inches?

Re:Intake manifold

The Round ones I beleive are 4in or 4.5 OD I can't remember off the top of my head. The square style intake mani is built exactly like the STR intake manifold. I took all the measurements from it.

Chea right, I cant weld aluminum like that.. that ---- was all done by a professional welder 25+ years, he does lots of my fab work. He doesnt even work on cars, I just give him all the measurements, and tell him exactly what I want.

His welds are so sexy, he grinds them down at the end too, so it looks like that solid barrel is 1 piece (when it was split into 2)

I do all the porting on the entry runners.
