Re: insturment cluster question

does your dash have something that dims the lights?

99ExY8BoOsTeD 11-11-2006 06:51 PM

Re: insturment cluster question

yea i already checked that

streetracer42084 11-11-2006 07:08 PM

Re: insturment cluster question

check relays, fuses, take dash apart, or wiring.

Re: insturment cluster question

did you bother to put bulbs in :l

Re: insturment cluster question

i just pulled the cluster out and all is good. ill be checking the relays and the wire...thanx

Re: insturment cluster question

Stupid as this sounds. It could be a unlisted fuse.

If its worked before then pull all fuses out and check them. Dont start going nuts and come to find out it was a stupid fuse.

Re: insturment cluster question

have you tried kicking or hitting the dash untill it works again?

J-MAN 11-12-2006 01:16 PM

Re: insturment cluster question

check to see if the cluster lights up in another car, i know it sounds liek a pain but if its a honda pretty good chance you have a friend that has the same gen that it woudl fit right into. then if it works then it's a fuse or a relay on your car.

did you check your ------- bulbs?

my 81 camaros gauges would go out and i would hit it and they would come back on. one day i noticed that there was a bright light shining on the floor. nocked the bulbs out of the cluster. oops ;)

99ExY8BoOsTeD 11-12-2006 05:38 PM

Re: insturment cluster question

the kicking and the hitting doesnt work so im going to try it on another honda civic. hopefully its just a fuse or relay.....

Scott-EP 11-12-2006 06:57 PM

Re: insturment cluster question

usually the fuse for the dash lights is the same one as your parking/running lights.

99ExY8BoOsTeD 11-12-2006 07:03 PM

Re: insturment cluster question

the park and runing lights work so its not that. i just check the cluster with my wifes civic and it works so its iether a fuse or the relay. i check all the fuses and they are all good. do you guys know where the relay would be located...

Re: insturment cluster question

pin point your problem by takeing ur cluster out, check for voltage on the corrsponding pin at the plug.

99ExY8BoOsTeD 11-12-2006 07:25 PM

Re: insturment cluster question

ok thanx for the advise ill try that right now

Scott-EP 11-12-2006 07:28 PM

Re: insturment cluster question

there wont be a relay for the cluster since there is hardly any curent draw to light it up. could be your headlight switch. all of the lights dont run from one power lead off of the switch. there are more than one.

99ExY8BoOsTeD 11-12-2006 07:35 PM

Re: insturment cluster question

ok thanx for the info

Re: insturment cluster question

well hear it is . i check the fuses and one was burned. i change it and turn my lights on the dim switch started to smoke. so i checked the wireing and it look like all is connected right so what do you guys think it is?

J-MAN 11-13-2006 11:33 AM

Re: insturment cluster question

sounds like it's grounding somewhere, sounds like a wiring nightmare

slowcivic 11-13-2006 11:34 AM

Re: insturment cluster question

if you installed the dimmer you should see if you pinched the wire somewhere.

99ExY8BoOsTeD 11-13-2006 11:57 AM

Re: insturment cluster question

ill check the wireing of the dimmer but i think its grounding somewhere..

streetracer42084 11-13-2006 07:13 PM

Re: insturment cluster question

that could be the cause of it,i've had that problem in some buildings where bulbs were burning out, and just checking the switch did the trick.

Re: insturment cluster question

well i check the harness on the dim light switch. i got 24.8v on the connecter and when i check to see if i can connect pin 1 with a good ground it spark but when i connect pin 3 to a good ground the cluster's lights work. so i really dont know what to do so you guys have any suggestions in what to do?

igotnothin 11-14-2006 04:19 PM

Re: insturment cluster question

sounds like you wired the dimmer wrong.

99ExY8BoOsTeD 11-14-2006 05:32 PM

Re: insturment cluster question

i didnt installed the dimmer nor tamper with it, it just stop working for some reason. i guess im going to take it to a shop or figure out where the problem is. thanx guy for your advise and knowledege ;D :y

igotnothin 11-14-2006 05:38 PM

Re: insturment cluster question

you said you got the cluster to light up when you crossed pin 3. try runnign a new ground. maby it got cut, or something

good luck.

Re: insturment cluster question

24.8v? are you working on an airplane?

24.8 volts is way more than you should have there. Do your headlights seem ultra-bright for some reason? Could be a bad regulator in your alternator that might have taken out the dimmer in the process. Check the output voltage on the alternator as well to make sure.

igotnothin 11-14-2006 07:21 PM

Re: insturment cluster question

i didnt even catch the 24 volt thing

Donald125 11-14-2006 10:30 PM

Re: insturment cluster question

cluster light won`t work if theres no dimmer

99ExY8BoOsTeD 11-15-2006 03:41 PM

Re: insturment cluster question

ill check my alternator, but ill try to rewire the ground wire to see if that works. i used the multimeter to check how many volts are comeing out of the harness and i got 24.8v and how many watts and it didnt give me a reading.

Re: insturment cluster question

watts cant be metered as far as i know. my understanding is that watts are volts and amps multiplied or devided or something. also, amps are measured differently than volts. you cant just touch the leads like you do for volts. amps are measured inline

streetracer42084 11-19-2006 08:11 PM

Re: insturment cluster question

that is too high of a voltage to have on the if all else fail take it to a shop.

volts x amps = watts

watts / voltage = amps

watts / amps = voltage

its really only useful for switches and relays, in automotive applications. unless you're getting into electronical components (resistors and stuff)

fyi, 330ohm resistor (any wattage, bigger is better for large arrangements) will take 12v to somewhere around 2.7v-3v (spot on for LED's if you want to make ----...)

Re: insturment cluster question

yea, i have been getting into making stuff with LED's lately. its interesting stuff

make sure you dont buy 1.8v LED's and the 2.3-2.8 or whatever...
