I'm a lurker with a 420a turbo project!

I've been watching hmt for about a year and a half now.....seeing what can be done with almost no money.....

I love the site. I love the result and i love the destructive experiments. HTM is the ----!

So far, here are some pics of my shoddy rs (soon to be rst) before i started taking the motor out getting ready for a stock rebuild and 8psi.

MOAR!

http://s125.photobucket.com/albums/p...=nav_tab_album

I spun a rod bearing and i'm currently looking to do a full stock rebuild or swap in a neon block. Whichever comes first i guess.

After the rebuild, heres what i got going in:

2g dsm t25 turbo
Log mani
38mm turbonetics evo wg with screamer pipe
12:1 vortech fmu
wally 255
2.5" piping
1g dsm smic (looking to get a cheap ebay fmic soon)
bosch bov
Electronic Fuel cut defender
random boost gauge
Open downpipe (for now. Waiting on electronic cutout to use stock exhaust for the po-po) :)

Stay tooned. I should put down around 200hp at the wheels. Crap, but it's a start until i have a forged shortblock. There is a strong possibility that i may build up a 2.4 stratus block with my head and srt4 rods and pistons. I don't know yet since i have a baby on the way but i'll try to do something out of the ordinary and on the cheap.

Thanks for having me.

Brandon

cool. my friend had a built 420a gs with pistons/rods and the star turbo kit, hahn portfueler, ect. made 296@20psi i believe. then it prodceded to catch on fire at 5mph.

On a side note, i'm a third hand owner of the car. It was abused, neglected....got knows what else. I didn't bother to bust out the black light. The clear was fading, dents everwhere, cracks in the front bumper, major curb rash on the stock 14's, it's been bottomed out hard (before i had it and dropped it) and evidence of this is on the frame rails and the hard lines going back to the brakes/gas tank/oem fpr........

I'm almost at the point i've been wanting to be at since i bought the car.

A camber kit, new set of rear tires and a brake upgrade (gsx front calipers and slotted rottors, oem gs rear rotors and calipers, hawk pads) is in order after i get this ---- done. I'm getting a bunch of rattle cans filled with glorious black primmer for my b-day. I love flat black.

Good luck man. My brother-in-law has a 98 GSX, and that thing is always falling apart. If its not a new motor, its a new transmission, or brakes, or interior parts, or suspention parts. I will say that its QUICK, but for the money he has into it he could have had somthing that was FAST!

My advise would be to find another motor and sell it. I just got rid of mine about 8 months ago. Even better just do something wild and throw a built B18 in it lol

Re: I'm a lurker with a 420a turbo project!

Honestly, i've always liked the 2g dsms since they came out in 95..... I saw a teal talon parked at the end of my old neighboorhood and though that ---- was awesome, especially how it said "talon" in the back.

I was brought up on v-8's so that was the first 4 banger i saw that i liked.

I'm sure when it comes time for me to quit putting money into it, i'll jump into a d-series project since parts are so readily available, all i'd have to do is throw a rock in any direction and go that way to get something.

Brake swaps, engine swaps, cheap forged internals, cheap turbo manifolds, cheap engine management.....

Trust me, this project isn't for keeps now that i know having a dsm is a pain in the ass..... I will get it boosted though and finish up a few odds and ends and then she's getting sold in favor of a nissan/honda.

Don't waste your time boosting it. You will probably sell it better if you leave/make it OEM as possible. I know I would pay a little more for a complete OEM car than one that has been fucked with.

dunno if nissan is a much better choice, they're quite the clusterfuck.

At least rwd and 6 cylinders is an option though

I just went from a '97 Eclipse RS to a '91 Civic DX. I loved the Eclipse to death but I must say i'm happier with the Civic. I gathered a bunch of parts to turbo my Eclipse, I had a 13g turbo off a stock automatic 1st gen DSM, 1st gen BOV, 2nd gen SMIC, and a couple other small odds and ends. To say the least I gave up on it when I found out even on 7psi on stock internals these cars were only running mid to low 15's at best, not to mention with over 100,000 miles on the motor it wouldn't have lasted more than a few months even driving it easy. The 420a is a good reliable motor, and they can make real good numbers built and turbo'd, but I had to have something daily driveable. It is extremely easy to turbo though, I know a lot of people that just used a 12:1 FMU and and 255lph fuel pump for fuel management and had good results.

fully built motor almost cracking 300 .. thats unheard of ;)

Dude don't want to be a bum but don't ------- waste your time. I run 20psi daily on my 420a and its a POS. Im using 8 injectors and a EIC with a MSD. Do yourself a favor and sell that car and buy a honda or something and boost that.

What I have broke so far:
Engine at 8psi - ring lands blew off (cheap ass cast pistons)
3 turbos 13g; 14b; 14b (egay ---- so whatever)
Trans-axle - diff pin came out while cruising down the road, I could literally see through the trans-axle - I welded the bitch in this time. And I think this trans is on the way out too; lots of backlash.

Your better off spending it on a decent car. But if you decide to go though with it PM me for more info about setups ect. I'd be glad to help.

Go for it man. As long as your having fun with it who cares? ;)

2gnt local?

They cost soooo much money to make fast, especially if it's an older, neglected car like mine.... $750 for forged internals, $400 for cams, $350 for the valvetrain, $200-300 for injectors, $399 for msnsII........ I can't have a kid and do what i want to do to this car. It just isn't going to happen.

I already have alot of my turbo parts.

I've already blown a tranny. :) Liked to not go into the gears sometimes and in the last few weeks i was running it, it would pop out of 5th constantly. I had to hold it there. Try smoking and driving like that with no power steering! I hated it. I paid $350 cash money for another with 75k on it and it's been doing fine n/a. Clutch is slipping but that's only because the rear main is leaking. Sooo many oil leaks. Cam sensor seal, ---- composite oem headgasket, oil pan gasket....... All being replaced soon.

I've heard the cast pistons dont last too long if you boost often. I probably will order new pistons and rings. Yes, cast. They're cheap. Granted i'd rather boost on a fresh hone, ring, pistons and bearings than ---- that's got 120,XXX miles on it. The head is in great shape though.

I live really close to charlotte. Trust me, somebody will buy the car boosted and pay what i'm asking. 9 times out of 10, people dont know what the hell their buying. Eclipse turbo, hks, turbonetics, garrett..... Enough said. Somebody will buy it. I'll probably make money off the car.

Turbo kit: $1000(ish)
Car: $1500
GST wheels: Free
Shocks and springs: $100
Deck: $20
Speakers: $20
Tires: $300
Trans: $350
Basic maint: I dunno. Probably close to $200.....

So i've spent about $3k total on the project since may of last year. I'm probably going to end up putting $1200 to $1500 more in her and then she's going to have to find a new home.

Re: I'm a lurker with a 420a turbo project!

Almost done.

I spun a rod bearing about 5 months ago, rebuilt her and got back on the turbo track. ---- that sidemount and ---- a bosch bov. Traded a 38mm turbonetics evo gate for an hks knockoff bov and pipe and picked up a starion intercooler cheap on here.
Getting that sidemount to work was more trouble than it was worth so i ditched it and had my end tanks modified to flow better on the starion/conquest jawn.

My custom oil feeds and drains are done. Took a couple of weeks back and forth to 4 stores getting what i needed. Went with a tuner toys/steathmode drain fitting with a 3/8 hose barb, vatozone braided fuel line for the drain, compression fittings and brakeline on my ebay feed line and a fuckload of teflon tape later.......

Turbo is clocked. ---- that snap ring. My drain line is pointed in a 30 degree downward angle so it's good enough. If i blow oil in the downpipe, ---- it. It's a $50 turbo.

Boost gauge is installed (faze cheapy from vatozone, wally 255 is in.

I was going to put my fmu in today but something came up.....

My starion intercooler with new outlets made it's way to georgia and i'm told i'll get it back thursday.

Downpipe is done-ish. I used 2.25" for my internal wastegate dump and my downpipe adapter. I'll clamp the bitch to my stock downpipe with some flex section until i go to the muffler shop..... I'll be picking that up today or thursday.

I had my fcd installed but it was ------- with my car n/a and was sending some crazy ---- to my ecu. I used 200 miles worth of fuel in less than 100. I took it off for now. I'll probably see if i hit fuel cut first before putting it back on and re-calibrating it.

So, i'm pretty much done at the moment until i get my ---- back and put some 93 in my tank.

I'm going to see how it pulls at 7 psi and then crack it up to 10 and then 12. I should be able to run 12 with 93 octane without knocking or killing my ringlands. 12psi on a t25 with flat top higher cr neon pistons should have me at around the 230-240whp mark. Stock gst's run 14ish but have lower cr so they make less power at that level....if anyone has any q's of why my car will make more hp than a stock gst.

Pics later.

The overall design of a 4g63 7bolt is fundementally different than a 420a. You cant use a gst as a basis for your power goals. Much less the compression ratio of the motor. Your compressor limited with the t25, regardless of the boost level, it can only make so much hp.

It wont last long at those levels without tuning. Ring lands will own you. I assume youve had this motor apart or seen one apart? The stock pistons have shitty ring lands.

Good luck with it though. I hate to see anyone's ---- blown up.
