Just the motor my ass. ::)

Re: if you want an rsx motor check this craigslist ad out
Joey, how much am I looking at for an L33, computer, appropriate manual transmission, engine harness?
|
Re: if you want an rsx motor check this craigslist ad out
Some people claim $500 for the motor, but I was finding $700-900 for sub-50K engines within an hour and a half drive. I'm sure in todays economy (the one where full size trucks sell for 1/5th their value) I could get the engine harness included in that price.
I haven't gotten into the transmission deal yet, but it's a SBC bellhousing so I'm not sweating it. I also have no use for the stock computer, so I haven't looked into that either. |
Re: if you want an rsx motor check this craigslist ad out
What would you be using... MS or FreeEMS or something else?
|
Re: if you want an rsx motor check this craigslist ad out
$400 Honda AEM.
|
Re: if you want an rsx motor check this craigslist ad out
I see I see... L33 is a possibility for my project now, along with a rotary ( :y ), sr20, ej20r.
|
Re: if you want an rsx motor check this craigslist ad out
I don't like EJ20 and rotaries, and the SR20 is overhyped/too much money for what you get. I would bend my opinion on rotaries if I needed something light and compact.
Sounds like a wierd project if those four engines are options. |
Re: if you want an rsx motor check this craigslist ad out
Cheap, small, lightweight, reliable (rotary lol) are what I'm looking at. Alluminum block motors that are 30" or less long.
|
Re: if you want an rsx motor check this craigslist ad out
SR20, being iron block, aren't light.
EJ20 aren't a good design. I don't like rotaries becuase they are oil burners, and stock for stock a 10+ year newer EJ20 burns more oil. Sad, really. I think there are other engines out there that you could get cheaply, that are as good or better than what you are considering. |
Re: if you want an rsx motor check this craigslist ad out
That's where the L33 comes in I suppose. I've been leaning towards that lately more than my other choices. Or perhaps an aluminum rwd V6 with enough aftermarket support to justify going with that instead. I'm ranking my choices as follows at this point:
L33 - cheap, easy to find, however might be pushing the size/weight limits even being aluminum 13b - can be gotten really cheap (in need of a rebuild), come turbo stock, small size, would keep the weight low in the bay and behind the wheels, but the maintenance and the chance you take when purchasing one are negatives f20c - honda power, reasonably new ----, $$$$ ej20r - comes turbo stock, low center of gravity, however may be too wide for the bay, being jdm you never know what you're gonna get porsche or bmw inline - reliable, but limited support and $$$ sr20 - turbo stock, inline 4 for size, but $$ |
Re: if you want an rsx motor check this craigslist ad out
Consider the 1UZ. The early 90s ones can be had for pennies (people throw them away to run 2JZ :S) and have thick ass rods (exactly like early 2JZ rods vs the later VVTi 2JZ rods). They aren't quite as powerful as the L33, but you might find one so cheap it doesn't matter.
Did the Vulcan 4.0 V6 come aluminum block? Sort of a tall engine, IIRC, but not long. |
Re: if you want an rsx motor check this craigslist ad out
HOw bout the V8's that come in Land Rovers? All aluminum engine and fairly small. Not huge numbers for a V8 but it's light. Not to mention the aftermarket for those things. What about using a bike engine?
|
Re: if you want an rsx motor check this craigslist ad out
I've considered it but in my mind it will probably be too much trouble to mid mount in a Civic. Getting the radiator cooled, ic poping, piecing together trailing arms and ----.. I already have the 240sx rear and I'd love the sound of a sbc.
|
Re: if you want an rsx motor check this craigslist ad out
1UZ or VZ/MZ variant.
Why not. |
Re: if you want an rsx motor check this craigslist ad out
So you all think 1uz over the l33?
|
Re: if you want an rsx motor check this craigslist ad out
A turbo L33 would kind of be l33t though...
|
Re: if you want an rsx motor check this craigslist ad out
It would.
Idk get what ever is cheaper, I don't know if there's any discrepancy between the aluminum blocked L33 and the LM7 or w/e. |
Re: if you want an rsx motor check this craigslist ad out
The 1uz would be more attractive to me if it had a bigger bore and less stroke, but I'll still keep it in mind.

The 1UZ you find will be ~10-15 years older. You'll find them more complete (for the dollar) but that might end up reinvested in building the engine.

5VZ 3.4L DOHC would be a good motor, apart from the early ones having headgasket problems, (arp's FTW) the only real restriction in the motor is the cams, and I think there are solutions for that now. Plus there are 2wd toyota trans that bolt up to the S/VZ series that came in the 2wd 3vz trucks. 5vz was designed for boost from the factory, and plenty of parts laying around. The manifolds can be flipped like a 5.0 for easy turbo setup too. |

I like the 3800 Series-II a lot. |
Re: if you want an rsx motor check this craigslist ad out
My buddy has a buick regal with a 3800 in it, running something like 20psi with meth on a stock motor. Its scary fast and granpa shits himself everytime it blows past him.

Re: if you want an rsx motor check this craigslist ad out
The GN is an iron block.
|
Re: if you want an rsx motor check this craigslist ad out
This makes the 13b attractive.. size and weight.
