idea for cheap homemade air-water intercooler
what if I took a junkyard intercooler like a probe or DSM or something and got a big plastic container about an inch bigger than the IC all around, cut some holes in the side for the charge pipes, sealed it all up good with urethane and ran my water lines into the plastic container and everything...
Actually, I know this would work. ;D thoughts? |
Re:idea for cheap homemade air-water intercooler
by water lines i hope you dont mean the coolant lines for the motor they are way to hot....just make the container a little bigger and put in ice and a little water
|
Re:idea for cheap homemade air-water intercooler
LOL... i was thinking more like a big tub of ice water I could mount maybe on the floor in front of the passenger seat... hot engine coolant is the deval!
|
Re:idea for cheap homemade air-water intercooler
my idea is better, get a dsm intercooler, cover seal it up, except on the sides where normally air would pass through, put some fabric (like a wetsuit type deal) that will let air through but keep water in. then mount it where air will be hitting it, and still keep the tank and water pumps
|
Re:idea for cheap homemade air-water intercooler
you would never hit full boost, your flow would suck.. not to flame on ya dude but thats a pretty shitty idea
|
Re:idea for cheap homemade air-water intercooler
If you're in a race only application, you can empty the wiper fluid container, then run some hoses to the intercooler with a few mist nozzles that spray onto the intercooler. Fill the wiper fluid reservoir with cold water and whenever you turn on the wiper fluid you have a nice water to air intercooler sprayer.

Re:idea for cheap homemade air-water intercooler
---- all that noise, just get some liquid nitrogen... as long as we're talking unfeasable concepts here...
|
Re:idea for cheap homemade air-water intercooler
The water spraying on the intercooler is feasable though; a buddy of mine did it on his stock 1G Talon Tsi side mounted intercooler but he did it with the rear wiper. I'll ask him sometime this week how he did it.
|
Re:idea for cheap homemade air-water intercooler
wtf are you talking about bad, nothing would change about the intercooler except there would be water around it, and air would be let through the instead of totally blocked off
|
Re:idea for cheap homemade air-water intercooler
i dont get how air would go through (if air can go through than so can water) or how that would help since you already have ice water
|
Re:idea for cheap homemade air-water intercooler
Check out this little thing I just made...
I'm pretty sure this would work great. http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...d/fc9f4d09.jpg |
Re:idea for cheap homemade air-water intercooler
there is fabric that will lets air go through it, but not water. i would use that...
|
Re:idea for cheap homemade air-water intercooler
nod that would work to, i thought about that for a while, but were would you put it? in front of the intercooler? inbetweem the intercooler and radiator? the water wouldn't get too cold, cause it'd be next to hot stuff
|
Re:idea for cheap homemade air-water intercooler
the water box would sit where the battery sits. Run water lines up front to a AIR cooler unit (like an oil cooler)
|
Re:idea for cheap homemade air-water intercooler
guys i think u complicated things a bit to much.. lol..
do the thing with the plastic around the intercooler... have a ghetto resvevoir. remember you need a water pump and if that water pump does 2gpm then u want a 2.5 gallon resevoir. also use a huge trani cooler on the front of the car. it should work just as good as an intercooler unless it gets heat soaked. |
Re:idea for cheap homemade air-water intercooler
I think the idea to mount little windshield washer jets that would spray onto the IC is where it's at. I really enjoy this thinking like this on this site, we might talk about some ghetty ---- like a plastic ghetto tank to keep the IC cool, but this is the ---- that eventually wins the race, little things here and there. Keep her goin!!

Re:idea for cheap homemade air-water intercooler
spraying water onto your IC with sprayers is rice imo. it wont do ----.
|
Re:idea for cheap homemade air-water intercooler
MR_DR_PEP:
running the charge pipes through the water rezzy is a bad idea IMHO... well, not BAD, but very inappropriate... waste of time, the temperature drop would be practically nothing. |
Re:idea for cheap homemade air-water intercooler
u wanna hear what's rice?
at one point, i put the sprayers at the bottom of my wheel wells, and put soap and water in the resivoir, so i could soap up my tires for a smoke show... :-[ |
Re:idea for cheap homemade air-water intercooler
spraying water onto your IC with sprayers is rice imo. it wont do ----. The physics of the water evaporating from the suface of the intercooler greatly increases the transfer of thermal energy from the intercooler to the ambient air. |
Re:idea for cheap homemade air-water intercooler
i agree....especially if ice water is used
|

Next time you have a POS to thrash, try filling your washer reservoir with diesel and running the tube down the throat of your carb. Make ungodly amounts of thick white smoke on demand...... |
Re:idea for cheap homemade air-water intercooler
The water spraying on the intercooler actually lowered my buddy's ET by .3 - took him to the 13s!!! He did a couple runs that day, same amount of runs done w/o water as w/water and his best was -.3 off his best time w/out water.

Re:idea for cheap homemade air-water intercooler
Agreed, we use to always spray my Ic down with a nice mist of water before racing.. its a great idea...
RICE? lol, shortyz you ------- hick |
Re:idea for cheap homemade air-water intercooler
Yeah, I thought it over a while and figured that the compressed air from the turbo could possibly heat up the water instead... Not soo good :)
However, I have a great link for y'all to see. These guys took a 91 CRX Si, and made a complete custom crx turbo job with an air/water intercooler. It was claimed to cool charge temps down 70% running 7psi ! That's really amazing. Here: http://intermix.engr.arizona.edu/~sc...0Design%20.htm Read it ALL!! I printed it all out and made a booklet. |
Re:idea for cheap homemade air-water intercooler
why am i a hick? shortyz is the one who said it was rice.
i said this: "my idea is better, get a dsm intercooler, seal it up, except on the sides where normally air would pass through, put some fabric (like a wetsuit type deal) that will let air through but keep water in. then mount it where air will be hitting it, and still keep the tank and water pumps" |
Re:idea for cheap homemade air-water intercooler
It has to do a little bit. Why do you think we sweat? It's a known fact that liquid on a surface with wind chill in play is going to make the metal surface cooler. It might not be a lot, but sometimes .3 secs is all it takes to win the race. Ice water is where it's at, and with the IC as close to an open area with as much air to catch as possible. It should do the trick. Keep your cool!! 8)

Re:idea for cheap homemade air-water intercooler
hahahah
i dont see how a jet of water like 2mm wide can do anything for an IC 1000x times the size of that jet of water.. mabey if you had like wide spray nozzles or something.. also doesnt the track get pissed off when u have a line of water all way the way down the track? ;) |
Re:idea for cheap homemade air-water intercooler
Well see thats just it we used some misting nozzles and it covered the whole thing (we had 2 on his stock intercooler) and it didn't leave any water on the track because most caught in the intercooler.
|
Re:idea for cheap homemade air-water intercooler
use a "mist" of water on the intercooler... not a ------- jet stream, and if track officals see a leak of your car, you are off the track :(
sorry johnny, Jeff |
Re:idea for cheap homemade air-water intercooler
I would rig up a standalone unit with a small water can somewhere. Run a separate switch on the interior of the car... lol. If someone asked me about it, I would love to say, "well, that's my nozzle sprayer for the intercooler".
BTW, the idea I had up top I believe will in fact work. Someone with some spare time on their hands try this: Get a small intercooler, and fill it up with water. Put it under the front bumper and drive around for a while. I'm quite sure when you feel the intercooler, it should be very cool or even cold. I'm making it one of my goals to have a water cooled intercooler now. That way I can be even more ghetto (and of course done nice). I will keep y'all informed on this... hahaha |
Re:idea for cheap homemade air-water intercooler
!
OK.. Sorry to post twice, but it was required in this case. I found a site that explains ALOT on this subject. It the text I found this: "Another example. In my high-boost Mira Turbo I ran a water/air intercooling system. The water/air heat exchanger comprised a highly modified ex-boat multi-tube copper heat exchanger, with a few litres of water in it. An electric pump circulated the water through a separate front-mounted cooling core. Intake air temp was measured using a thermistor and a dedicated LCD fast-response meter." It looks like I was on the right track about my idea I drew above. Also YOU MUST CHECK OUT THIS SITE! It explains alot... Check it out. http://www.autospeed.com/cms/article...les&A=0527&P=1 It even has a section about water spraying, etc.... |
