Just the fact of being an HMT member alone makes most of us smarter than the general populous. That is, if you consider resourcefulness "smart". It's funny how you judge what you consider "smart", based upon the poll, by the level of education achieved. I find many college graduates to be complete morons that don't have/can't keep a decent job and are paying or defaulting on thousands of dollars in student loans. I went to a state college for a few semesters, but decided the ratio of benefit to the monetary output wasn't going to be high enough. I was able to learn everything that I would have in classes on my own just by reading and practicing what I learned. I know this doesn't quite apply for highly skilled, specialized fields like engineering, legal or medical, but for general knowledge degrees like liberal arts or business, I think "higher education" is a complete waste of money. Money that would be better used networking to meet the right people who can get you into your field of choice. If you're reasonably competent, once you're in the door, you can figure out what needs to come next. Then, instead of paying to learn, you're getting paid to learn and what you're learning applies directly to the job you do. Not everyone can pull that off, but if you can, it works out well.

ehh. you prove a point, but a week one. this isnt 1975. you cant leave high school and go into the workforce making good money like you used to be able to. yea theres a few who can. blah blah blah, but a degree of some sort is just a min. for a decent job. not sure what you do, or how much you make. but i know it takes a lot more now a days than it did in the 70's.

I'm a network admin. I make around 50-60K depending on if I work OT/Weekends which I only do when installing new equipment or doing database maintenance. I also do consulting work for a few places and some custom programming/data conversion. I make about $100-200 an hour for that but I only do a few of those a year as time permits. My point was that a degree is ABSOLUTELY not necessary to get a good job. The key is networking to meet the people necessary to get you past the HR department (where a degree and certifications are necessary). Spending time on this would serve any competent person with a good head on their shoulders much better than spending thousands of dollars for a piece of paper that in the best case would only have 20-30% relevance to what you will actually be doing. This is for general education, not specialized positions. I'm specifically referring to the sheep that are following the flock and have no direction. If you talk to most of the kids in college today, the majority of them have no clue what they're going to do with their degree and are under the delusion that having that piece of paper is going to get them a good job. This isn't the case any longer. The most important thing you get from college is the social networking. What I'm trying to convey is the fact that it isn't necessary to pay thousands of dollars to get that. I went to Ohio State University and I could have easily received a full education without paying a dime. They don't take attendance in the lectures and all of the materials are available at the student bookstores. You don't really miss much from the recitations because 3/4's of the students in them are complete idiots anyway. Just goto the lecutures and read the material if you want to learn.

I'm in my last year of undergrad at University at Buffalo studying biology. Right now looking at taking a year off to get some money and enjoy my young life before I'm dead, and then going for at least a masters, possibly a phd eventually
