There's a program called Cain and Able that I used to retrieve a password at school when some jackass changed the passwords on all the lab computers. It also does about a million other neat things too.

you can't use that program cain; it was a pwl brute force attacker; 2k based os's use a different way to store passwords than 9x did.
As someone said before there is a bootable linux ou tthere that you can use to OVERWRITE user accounts passwords then set your own. I've used that ---- tons of times.

i'm not even going to begin on how to get it because its hard to use and you can frag a whole xp install if you do something wrong.

there are lots of free programs to retrive files on NTFS file systems after they've been deleted.

Reinstalling Windows XP should get rid of the whole password problem...

but who's to say it was NTFS? I know our school's computers were still FAT32 with XP :1

then let's just hope that he saved it on a different partition! :P If not, :X

Yeah it's too late now, but you could try running it as a second HD and try to access the files. I know when my HD wouldn't boot, literally, I couldn't do anything, just a blue screen. I bought another HD and just ran the original one as a secondary and was able to access the files no problem.
