Probably too late, but just reboot it in safe mode, that usually gets around that password.

set up another account on that account install apache web server on your computer. make your server root c:\documents and settings\your user name. open a web browser. go to http://127.0.0.1 and you can go through all of your files. if you need help editing the configuration file just ask

plus if you cant make another account on the computer. restart it and keep hitting f8 while its restarting, log in under administrator and make another account.

well yeah heres the problem, my when I installed XP on my computer i did so using a school image of it so there is an administrator password already in place so i can't seem to get into that either.

Nice one...

Try using these, these are some common passwords people use I've noticed:

blank (no password)
password
12345
qwert
abcde

also try the schools name, ---- like that.

download a linux utility that hacks windows passwords. finds it in litersally minutes.

also try this. login as the administrator.

usually its admin and admin
or its administrator and administrator.

If you still need help i have a "boot disk" that you simply put into your comp and restart..what it does is runs the OS right off of the disk..i got it from a buddy at the pentagon..i'm sure i could rip the files from it and send them to you? let me know

if you are able to log onto any account on the comp i have a program that you install and and run from dos and it will brute force all user names and passwords for that comp. so if it was loaded with the school image then you would have the admin password for all the others as well.

its probably all too late.. punch the guy who changed the password on you when you see him.

btw..brute force only works if the password is around 7 characters in length, keep adding more, and the time to crack it grows exponentially. (especially if its case sensitive, includes numbers, & special characters)

You could try, installing that HardDrive to another computer.

There's a program called Cain and Able that I used to retrieve a password at school when some jackass changed the passwords on all the lab computers. It also does about a million other neat things too.

well if the windows admin password is alredy set install windows again over the current version then do the thing with apache that i said dont reformat the disk when you reinstall though :6 does bios have a password also?

Re: How to gain access to a password protected XP computer

you can't use that program cain; it was a pwl brute force attacker; 2k based os's use a different way to store passwords than 9x did.
As someone said before there is a bootable linux ou tthere that you can use to OVERWRITE user accounts passwords then set your own. I've used that ---- tons of times.

i'm not even going to begin on how to get it because its hard to use and you can frag a whole xp install if you do something wrong.

there are lots of free programs to retrive files on NTFS file systems after they've been deleted.

Reinstalling Windows XP should get rid of the whole password problem...

but who's to say it was NTFS? I know our school's computers were still FAT32 with XP :1

then let's just hope that he saved it on a different partition! :P If not, :X

Yeah it's too late now, but you could try running it as a second HD and try to access the files. I know when my HD wouldn't boot, literally, I couldn't do anything, just a blue screen. I bought another HD and just ran the original one as a secondary and was able to access the files no problem.

dont format the hardrive you will lose your files, if you tryed to access the drive from another computer it would say protected as well. you need to use somthing like apache to trick windows and if you installed windows over the previous version without formatting you will be able to access the computer after you installed apache and accessed the file like its a website you will be overiding windows. trusstt meeeee

Re: How to gain access to a password protected XP computer

I managed to get it working at like 7:30 this AM. I DLed a program called ERD Commander wich pretty much boots into some sort of windows like enviroment that allows you to access your files, change passwords ect... I didn't really play around with it much other then to figure out how to set my password back but it seems like a pretty neet program.
