you need a hone...and a drill. And you can do it with the crank in just fine, just rotate it so its not sticking straight up i guess

Re: How easy is it to hone a block?

If you're putting stock pistons back in it is usually a good idea to put them back in the same cylinder that they came from due to wear patterns on the walls/piston skirts. Honing takes care of most imperfections but that's just me having o.c.d. I use the hone with three stone because it expands to different sizes and you can use it on many different engines, just make sure you keep it nice and lubed up run it mid-high speed and keep it moving up and down don't let it sit in one spot spinning then you'll ---- your cylinders. I find it easier to work with a bare block since you don't have to deal with the crank in the way or the extra weight of the crank...but i'm busted and do my engine building on the floor ::) if you're doing it on an engine stand it is just a preference of whether you want to take the crank out, however unless you are pushing the rods/pistons out the top you'll have to remove the crank (if you go out the top be sure to put sleeves on the rod bolts so you don't scratch the cylinders). That's all I can think of right now, lemme know if you still got questions.
