I have had a couple of those that were just a pain in the ass. a 5 ft pipe did the job but the blocks were out of the car. I have taken I dont know how many blocks apart and never got to one of these mystery bolts that dont want to come off. Impacts dont like crank pulley bolts I never had luck with them. 1/2"breaker bar and the longest bar you can get you can get. I also made a special bracket to mount to the flywheel so I can run a bolt into the motor. You aint gonna bend a 17mm bolt.

Put #1 piston at BDC on comp stoke, feed some rope though the spark plug hole, use a fair amount(use a good quality fiber rope, no nylon or hemp ----) rotate the engine back up to TDC, it will bind up on the rope. ideally you want it on the comp stroke just in case so you dont mess up a valve or get the rope stuck or some ----(it's never happend to me)

Then get a impact socket, and a 3 foot harbour freight breaker bar and a additional cheater pipe(if needed)
Use heat if necessary.

The rope has enough give it that it won't break anything or marr up the cylinders but will still compress and lock up the engine so you can get that fawker off

I have done this so many times, and it works perfect.

Heat + Breaker bar usually does it for me.

Props for some creativity right there...

this is what we did on every 2 stroke that came into our polaris shop. on teh 4 strokes we could just lock the pvt clutch up against something

I use a similar trick with gear lube, but there's a risk of bearing or rod damage so i didn't recomend it.

Basically just put it about 90* before TDC compression, and pull the spark plug. dump in some gear lube and put in an old plug. Once your done pull the plug and turn it to TDC, suck out the oil with a suction gun ($12 atr parts stores, plus get a reducer barb and some hose small enough to fit in the spark plug hole), to get the rest of the oil out spray in some brake cleaner, and crank the engine over with the plug out while holding a rag over the top of the spark plug tube.

no risk of the rope getting tangled this way.

Dude that totally worked I was over at my girlfriends grandma's house. she was having problems with her explorer so I went over to check it out. The grandma's late husband was a ford dealer mechanic. As I was fixing her car I was using his tools and I saw this big ass craftsman breaker bar with of all things a 19mm socket on it. I took this as a sign from ------ beyond or something. so I put my car up on these biggest jackstands I ever saw like two foot tall at the lowest setting, grabbed a piece of rope I saw and ran it down in the cylinder like you said it locked the motor great I put that bar on it laying on my back under the car I had feet on the front bumper support and and had to put everything I had in it and right when it felt like the bar was gonna break the bolt came free.
I'm so happy I got that thing off I was going to a tool rental plave the next day and getting an impact to so that saved me the trouble.

My z6 had a 50mm hex in the harmonic balancer, so i bought a tool which was a 50mm hex bolt, drilled out and attached to a 24" bar. Was a one man job. If you have a welder, a similar tool could be made for very minimal cost.

Thats the tool, made the job so easy. I used a 24" breaker bar to undo the bolt with an impact socket. Seriously no trouble at all and no chance of damage to the motor.
