How do I get out the harmonic balancer bolt from hell !!!!!!

Yeah Ive had my car boosted for two weeks now. BUt ive had a rattle and just a small water leak coming from my oil pump and water pump area since before I installed the turbo. Ive got new parts ready to put on and a Beefy head gasket from LSD.

I can't do any of it though until I get the harmonic balancer bolt off. Ive had it at midas and their impact wouldn't move it we tryed for about 20 minutes my freind works their so its cool They let me come back and use every tool they had to take it off but it didn't work.

Then I took it to a tire place up the street their imact and compressor were way stronger then at Midas but we still couldn't get it off. I have an extra bolt so I'm thinking about drilling the old one out but I really don't want to risk tearing up the thread in my crank. Any Idea's would be appriciated

For those really stubborn nuts/bolts, i put a 4 ft. pipe on the end of a 1/2 drive rachet, it wins every time, spray the hell out of it with pb blaster although it prolly wont help much.

go to a rental place, and ask for a 1" impat gun made for semi's.

there like some 800-1000 ft lbs of trq,

yo might brake the crank if it's really stuck, but at that point..you were screwd any how,

you might try some heat on the end of the crank,

or the best pen. lube i've found yet, MOPAR rust penatrent, it's like 15 $ a bottle but works so well, let it soak over night, or a few nights

try all of them at once, and your sure to break some thing cool !! ;D ;D

yea see if there are any semi truck shops anywhere near you, they will definitly have a strong enough impact to get it off.

Damn I'll keep that semi truck idea in mind...

I've broke sockets/ratchets trying to get the one off my car. It also made the flywheel eat the tool I had wedged in it. After a thicker tool and a 6ft pole combined with another 1/2" ratchet and beefy socket, and only one small beefy extension...it finally came off. Scared me at first because it just SNAPPED and sounded like a broken head or stripped bolt.

Re: How do I get out the harmonic balancer bolt from hell !!!!!!

BlackSi (Beau) turned me onto the idea of heating it up. I now use one of those MAPP Gas torches from HD, and heat up the bolt and dampner, and then hit it with my Sears 1/2" Impact at about 120psi. Comes right off.

Good luck!

heat that bitch up and bust it off with the impact.....if not a jackhammer will always do the trick....

ya i couldnt get that bolt off either so my friends dad heated it up with the oxy acy torch and threw some ice on the bolt and got it off. it was TIIIIGHT

MAC sells a 1000ft/lb 1/2" impact. The main problem they are probably tunning in to is line loss. Build a T-fitting to feed the impact with 2 air hoses, bout $5 in parts from home depot. If that doesn't work, you can hit the edge of the bolt with an air hammer, or find a bigger impact. One of the guys where I work has a 3/4" fed by twin air lines, it will loosen or snap anything you can find on a Honda.

The semi idea isn't so bad though. If you drop a tech at a semi service center $5-10 they'd probably pop it off for you. You don't have to have the wheel off to reach it so it would only take them 30 seconds, then you could torque it to sprc and drive home.

take a 'strap wrench' and wrap that bitch around the crank pully and get someone with a huge breaker bar. its a 2 person job. dont loose that little key that comes out either...

Re: How do I get out the harmonic balancer bolt from hell !!!!!!

I have had a couple of those that were just a pain in the ass. a 5 ft pipe did the job but the blocks were out of the car. I have taken I dont know how many blocks apart and never got to one of these mystery bolts that dont want to come off. Impacts dont like crank pulley bolts I never had luck with them. 1/2"breaker bar and the longest bar you can get you can get. I also made a special bracket to mount to the flywheel so I can run a bolt into the motor. You aint gonna bend a 17mm bolt.

Re: How do I get out the harmonic balancer bolt from hell !!!!!!

Put #1 piston at BDC on comp stoke, feed some rope though the spark plug hole, use a fair amount(use a good quality fiber rope, no nylon or hemp ----) rotate the engine back up to TDC, it will bind up on the rope. ideally you want it on the comp stroke just in case so you dont mess up a valve or get the rope stuck or some ----(it's never happend to me)

Then get a impact socket, and a 3 foot harbour freight breaker bar and a additional cheater pipe(if needed)
Use heat if necessary.

The rope has enough give it that it won't break anything or marr up the cylinders but will still compress and lock up the engine so you can get that fawker off

I have done this so many times, and it works perfect.

Heat + Breaker bar usually does it for me.

this is what we did on every 2 stroke that came into our polaris shop. on teh 4 strokes we could just lock the pvt clutch up against something

Re: How do I get out the harmonic balancer bolt from hell !!!!!!

I use a similar trick with gear lube, but there's a risk of bearing or rod damage so i didn't recomend it.

Basically just put it about 90* before TDC compression, and pull the spark plug. dump in some gear lube and put in an old plug. Once your done pull the plug and turn it to TDC, suck out the oil with a suction gun ($12 atr parts stores, plus get a reducer barb and some hose small enough to fit in the spark plug hole), to get the rest of the oil out spray in some brake cleaner, and crank the engine over with the plug out while holding a rag over the top of the spark plug tube.

no risk of the rope getting tangled this way.

Dude that totally worked I was over at my girlfriends grandma's house. she was having problems with her explorer so I went over to check it out. The grandma's late husband was a ford dealer mechanic. As I was fixing her car I was using his tools and I saw this big ass craftsman breaker bar with of all things a 19mm socket on it. I took this as a sign from ------ beyond or something. so I put my car up on these biggest jackstands I ever saw like two foot tall at the lowest setting, grabbed a piece of rope I saw and ran it down in the cylinder like you said it locked the motor great I put that bar on it laying on my back under the car I had feet on the front bumper support and and had to put everything I had in it and right when it felt like the bar was gonna break the bolt came free.
I'm so happy I got that thing off I was going to a tool rental plave the next day and getting an impact to so that saved me the trouble.

Re: How do I get out the harmonic balancer bolt from hell !!!!!!

My z6 had a 50mm hex in the harmonic balancer, so i bought a tool which was a 50mm hex bolt, drilled out and attached to a 24" bar. Was a one man job. If you have a welder, a similar tool could be made for very minimal cost.

http://www.lasertools.co.uk/item.aspx?item=1058

Thats the tool, made the job so easy. I used a 24" breaker bar to undo the bolt with an impact socket. Seriously no trouble at all and no chance of damage to the motor.

my gun will do it no pronlem, I can snap off bolts with 1" shanks where u live

you guys need to invest in a 3/4 inch breaker bar.. 1/2 inch is for -----s :6

Re: How do I get out the harmonic balancer bolt from hell !!!!!!

I live in Northern KY. And yeah the bar I used was actually a 1/2 inch drive. It was just a craftsman circa 1988 era when craftman tools were worth a damn. I gaurantee you I would have broken a new craftsman breaker bar if I had used on this.

composite IR 1000 ft lb max reverse
its a awsome gun. the guys in the shop come and get mine if they have a crank bolt they cant remove.

The guy came in to repai the hoist and couldnt remove the bolts on the top with a 6ft braker bar. I beat it with my gun for 30sec and snaped the bolt in half and it was about 1" to 1 1/4" thick shank

Craftsman has been junk since 1980, they've gotten better, but in the 80's I was returning tools every weekend.

Dad and me made sure not to clean up and walk in thru the clothing department :)

That made them really happy!

N KY...what part south of the 'nati?

B&ME in Park Hills?

*L* I guess my impressions were wrong then. Who does make good tools though. I work on cars constantly now so I need some good ---- that doesn't break.
