Homemade GSXR Exhaust

6 Attachment(s)
The first time I found out my bike had a cat on it I wanted to chop it off. So I finally got around to doing it. Here's the stock exhaust and cat:

Attachment 18122

Jig'd up and cut:

Attachment 18123

Mocked up:

Final product:

And finally mounted on the bike:

Definitely sounds a million times better. It actually has a sound instead of like a corked up motor ready to explode. I also took 10lbs off the bike and saved $500 from buying an aftermarket slipon that gives the same performance gains. I really liked the look of the stock pipe so I'm glad I don't need to get a gay looking slip on. Also since I sold the cat to the scrapyard for $20.00 I actually got paid to do this. There's also nothing like a homemade exhaust. :y

That is all.

Slipon's only gain like 3 to 5 Hp so I think any gains are in your head since its tough to tell. However it did seem to smooth out the thottle more and it does seem a little quicker. Definitely better than stock hands down

did you gut the exhaust or just get rid of the cat?
and you know that it's running really lean now and will burn itself up if you don't put a dynojet programer on it to ritchen it up
and with a slipon and velocity stacks i have seen dyno proven 10+whp but that was with someone doing a dyno tune no just a programer

why would it be "running really lean now and will burn itself up" cause it has SOOOOO much more flow that its MAJORLY increased VE, and since its a map based system (i'm guessing) its all ouf of whack and SUPER lean... seriously? ---- no, stock tuning is probably a tad rich anyways, its not gonna hurt anything running without re-tuning with JUST taking a cat off. I've been here for ~2 years and know better than to give an OG advice about some ---- i have no experience with. and wow, you've seen it add 10hp, who cares? thats probably more due to the velocity stacks than anything... didn't you hear me last time:
GO ------ DIAF
*edit, i guess that cornfuzed is right to a degree, that an exhaust will modify VE enough that it might warrant getting a PCIII, i see from whitey's sig that its a GSXR750, but i guess you can do without, but i think his $20 savings will be depleted if he buys a $270 PCIII, honda run all the time with crazy VE changes.*

yup your right. I hit the gas and the whole bike caught on fire and melted from it running so lean. ::)

No, EPA does not require the use of any specific technology. About 20
percent of current motorcycles use catalytic converters, and we project
this to increase to about 50 percent when the second phase of standards
takes effect in 2010. Ultimately the manufacturers will be responsible
for selecting how to distribute the use of various technologies among
their motorcycle models.

Are motorcycles a less-polluting alternative to cars?
No, in fact, motorcycles produce more harmful emissions per mile than a
car or even a large SUV. The current federal motorcycle standard for
hydrocarbon emissions is about 90 times the hydrocarbon standard for
today’s passenger cars. And when new emission standards go into effect,
SUVs will be about 95 percent cleaner than today’s motorcycle.

Apparently they're not required but since emissions must be tightened on them in the next few years, I'm sure more and more manufacturers will start using them.

Nice work whitey

I'm thinking about doing an exhaust for my bike, except I'd do mine for fuel economy. It came with some gay aftermarket can and now I'm lucky to get 45mpg when stock you get like 52mpg. 7mpg for like 8hp, no thank you.

what do you ride?
i mean just a pipe to gain 8hp and loose 7mpg is allot
only bikes i can think of that are that plugged up from the factory are harleys
witch only have like 45hp from the factory but a filter, slipon, and ecu flash gets you to arround 65hp
but they get like 45mpg from the factory and the mods don't hurt more than 2-3mpg

I could be wrong (though I highly doubt it), but I don't see freeing up the flow as causing a noticeable difference in mileage. I have 2.25" exhaust ripped from my last CRX on my current one. Mileage will still be the same, and it will be just as slow. Only difference from freeing up exhaust should be better throttle response and a little more power from not having to be pushed through the cat...

8hp isn't going to cost another 7mpg.

Where do you base your information?

i didn't say that it would hurt it 8mpg that was the other guy
but yes freeing up the exhaust dose make you burn more gas
thats why on a carbed bike or car when you open up the exhaust or air filter it runs leaner than optimal so you have to ritchen it up to be stoich
and at that point since you are putting more fuel in the engine the millage will go down
but again not that much

Nope, all newer bikes are going to have cat's. The California GSXR's do have more emission stuff than just a cat.

Pretty typical for 99-02 SV650's...

I'm going to get my bike serviced in the next week. My carb could need adjusting which could cause some issues, but typically people see about 50+mpg doing my type of riding and I see about 45mpg.

yeah sv's are sweet
but im pist off at them i bought a 2005 in 06 (as a leftover for cheap) and put a pipe and programmer on it and love the bike it's quick sounds good and everything but a friend buy's a 2001 thats carbed for $2500 with only 7500miles and it's piped and jetted and sounds sooo much better than the fuel injected version and the fuelie dosen't even make much more power (from what i read the numbers are 68-70hp for 99-02 and 70-74hp for 03-08)
