HMT air filter

I made an air filter today with a sock. I could have cut it down farther but I figure this gives it the full effect :P The black on my car is black primer were I removed some rust and bondoed over it. Enjoy.

How? it certainly isn't going to restrict flow with all it's holes and I figure it will filter better than a strainer so... I'm optimistic.

I saw come kid that had a rag clamped on the end of his piping. Seeing this was even better that the sock.

Re: HMT air filter

So the uh turbo won't suck the excess into the turbine? Good idea though. I think I might try that! How would your results sucks anyway? It IS washable like a K&N, lol. Oh yea, those sparco socks are custom to homie O0.

I had a sock for a air filter when i was NA (my air filter fell off , so i pulled over and duck taped a sock on a mcdonalds cup witha bunch of holes punched in it.) the car was slow as hell. plus it didn't take very long for the sock to break down

HMTguy 05-07-2005 07:54 PM

Re: HMT air filter

Actually I would make sure you get ALLLLL the lint off the sock (inside and out) before you run it. Other than that, I don't see a damn thing wrong!

Re: HMT air filter

Oh gee, a k&n is cheaper than a new turbo. Not worth going completely ghetto on.

Re: HMT air filter

take that ---- off...it will either get sucked in or just restrict the air too much imo

PoorMansPorsche 05-07-2005 09:52 PM

Re: HMT air filter

run it inside out.. the inside is the linty side.. I think it will flow shitty though.

Re: HMT air filter

it does flow shitty

Re: HMT air filter

I ran it all night, for about 150 miles of driving (drove back to school) Car drives like normal and I don't think there was any lint in it :-X I think it might actually work alright.

Re: HMT air filter

I've used a sock before and the car didn't even want to start. It blocked the flow major, but I guess I may just have thick socks. Use pantyhose.

I've heard sock filters work better if you shoot your babies into them first. 8)

Re: HMT air filter

Not an HMT filter, but I didn't feel like starting a new thread...

Mushroom Foam Filter vs. Paper Cone Filter vs. Screen/Clamp?

I had a cone filter, but I physically don't have room anymore. I switched to a Mushroom Foam Filter, but I'm not sure if it's more of an obstruction than help. So I'm thinking about going to a Screen, but how bad is it going to be with water?

nonvtec 05-09-2005 02:33 PM

Re: HMT air filter

Well, FYI, my sock is working great. Takes up zero room and I ran the car up to 7K today at 10 psi and no restriction problems or anything. Put a pipe on the turbo so it isn't exposed to water and there are no problems.

samson 05-09-2005 02:47 PM

Re: HMT air filter

Yea. I'm wondering what kinda crap am I going to have without a filter and just a screen? All the water, dirt, and junk.
