Help me find a cheap video card
 

First of all, is it worth it; will I see a benefit from upgrading from my integrated intel graphics?

I have an AMD Athlon 2800+ (2.08 ghz) and 1 gig of ram.

I can play games decently on it, but would like to upgrade so I can run higher resolutions on my 19" monitor.

Does it cost much more to get one with a DVI output?

I can't check ebay until later when I get home but I've checked before and seen a lot of older video cards go pretty cheap, would something like a card I can get for $50 be worth it?

If I can find my GeForce ti 4800, you can have it (granted you have an AGP slot). It's only AGP 4X, but it'll definitely be an upgrade from what you have now.

EDIT: I think it's called a 4600... not 4800... whatever, I have a 6800 now so the that one is just collecting dust somewhere.

not all.. depends on how old school it is... but yeah, most decent cards within the last 5 years come with analog, dvi and s-video.

Sweet, looks like I have an 8X AGP slot. That'll work with a 4X card right?

Yeah, you can use 4X... up to you if you want to buy a card though.

I have a geforce gainward 5900xt golden sample laying around i havent used in ages if you want it 20 bucks plus shipping. Plus it overclocks a ton if you need it to. It will play anything your trying to play prolly. If you want to go top of the line agp prepare to shell out some $ agp ---- is expensive.

If Yuri is ichbinsobose, I'd second buying that one. You're going to get way better performace by OCing and unlocking it than just about anything else other than an AGP 7900GT (which are about $300 now). It's by far the best bang for the buck. I'm running one myself and I play BF2, Sin Episodes, UT2k4, HL2 Ep, Prey, etc with great frame rates and 0 artifacting after unlocking mine to 16 pixel pipes and 6 vertex shaders.

Just curious is it a 6800gt or 6800 and is it already unlocked? My lil bro is looking to replace his pos 9800 pro. As far as tossing the 6800 on his computer it would prolly be bottleknecked by the cpu in the first place so unlocking and overclocking might not do any good :-\

Niether are unlocked.. you just have to add a registry (takes less than 5 seconds once you DL the registry file)... with nvidia it's called Coolbits. I'll try to find a place to DL it.

The 6800 GT and 6800 Ultra are the same except the Ultra is clocked higher out of the box. The regular 6800 has 12 pipelines while the GT & Ultra have 16. I figure if I just got the GT and OC it, it'll be just as good as the Ultra.

nvidia 7 series ftw. my new laptop sports a oc'd 7900gs 600/1200 3dmark05 score 8202. ive seen desktop versions of these cards as well. ps. sick ------- graphics and i can play any game thats out right now, just got done tearing up ghost recon advanced warfighter on 1440x900 graphics maxed out.

For a laptop that's badass... I benchmarked on 3dmark2005 12010 with the 6800 GT (oc'd as high as it could without overheating :P)

yeah on notebookforums.com its a lil bit higher then everyone elses as well, i think my processor is holding me back a bit on the cpu tests but hey for a 1.66 t2300 dual core, 1g kingston 667mhz ram,100gb hard drive. and the 7900gs, one question what is a high heat temp?? id idle at like high 80C with the other card which was a 7800go so dell sent me a new 7900gs oc'd right now at 550/1100 im seeing about 88C at the peak. is this ok? doesnt seem to hott or anything odd. o yea sry to thread jack hahah. def new card for the win man. what games are you looking to play?

lol sorry but the 12000 score for the 6800gt is complete bullshit on 3dmark 05 maybe 03 but not 05. I have a system running amd opteron oc'ed to 2.6 and a 7900gt and struggled to break 10000 on 05 so yeah 12000 = bs for that old pos card. I have a 7600gt sli system im building right now and its right in the range of 12000 and one 7600gt is faster than a 6800gt period. :3

just get the 6800 Vanilla AGP that can be unlocked for $60 shipped in the classifieds, its a good card for the price jago. you'll DEFINATELY notice a diff from intel integrated craphix.

Make sure you have an extra HDD power plug for the card as well as a 350w power supply as MINIMUM.

You're gong to be disappointed. You need something that supports Pixel Shader 3.0. That one doesn't and the hack to make it work sucks balls. The the primary reason I upgraded from a ti4200 to a 6600. This means you cannot play BF2 with it or nearly any game released in the last 6 months and expect anything short of nintendo graphics. You need something in the 6xxx or 7xxx series for Nvidia or X1300/X1600/X1800/X1900 for ATI to get Shader 3 support.

dont count on playing any modern games w/ that i'll tell you right now.

and 640 x 480 @ low quality does not count.

that 6800 unlocked could easily do 1024x768 @ highest quality, probably 1280 x 1024.

yup, its mostly about the video card, cpu does the AI and physics etc etc.

let me put it into terms you can understand.

you have 750cc injectors, 3" exhaust and a ACT Xtreme PP on a stock d15 HF motor.

d15 motor = video card
all the other = rest of the PC.

Haha I understood that.

I'm gonna install the 4600ti and see how much of an improvement it makes first, it still has to be a ---- ton better than the integrated graphics that I had, and I was playing games alright with that too.
