Got a new car. TURBO! *new pics*

5 Attachment(s)
So I just picked up a 1991 Toyota Supra turbo for 2800. Had 6,000 in reciepts for new low milage motor 7mgte installed by a performance shop, and full HKS exhaust system w/ HKS downpipe, and all the goods. Car has the targa top, but it's an automatic. Pulls suprisingly pretty hard. The interior needs quite a bit of work, and the car is very dirty. exterior needs a little attention too, but NO rust thank god. runs and drives flawless or I wouldn't have bought it. has new tires and such. Figured I got a decent deal on it.

Those are fun/solid cars just heavy as ------- hell. Good torque even on the na models, i cant imagine driving the boosted version.

gut that ---- and put it on a diet is it internally gated im sure it is maybe wrong but either way pick up a mbc and turn the boost up, you think is fast now just wait till you put mbc in the mix

Re: Got a new car. TURBO!

invest in a set of headstuds and a metal headgasket. Car should be pretty solid after that without that many worries.

550hp here you come (usable power too). Then go find some rustangs to pick on.

digging through the reciepts Kaos Motorsports out of Louisville installed a metal headgasket, but says nothing about the headstuds. another reciept says "Head machine work- 1825.00" there was another reciept for 3,250, for the motor, installation, turbo parts like blowoff valve, turbo timer etc., exhaust, aftermarket radiator and a few other things done in november of last year.

Yeah, I know nothing about Toyotas, as i've mainly owned and worked on Hondas. So i'm gonna do some research and figure out what turbo would be ideal. Not looking for 550, but 350-400 would suit me well.

From working on a 300zx to those supra's they are my preference due to ten times more engine bay space ;)

Id rather replace a clutch then the tranny ;)

True, havent heard anything bad about any of the Supra trannys from any years. I think they're pretty solid, depending on how they're treated of course.

Thanks man, i was wiery about the 2800 because of the little ---- on the interior that pissed me off, cracked dash, broken turn signal, cracked leather seats etc. but it was so mechically sound and ran so good that I couldn't pass it up.. it's def worth puttin a bit more into.

Re: Got a new car. TURBO!

Put head studs and up the boost. Also the ct-26 turbo it comes with is not that good, you might want to look at a holset >:D.

Is that safe? I dont want to dump 250 for an electronic one, but just a little generic jobby would work fine i'd assume. Didn't know how much boost the 7mgte would like for a daily. I've heard they're pretty strong blocks. Also would fuel delivery be an issue if I went with more boost? on the stock psi guage 8psi is it's max, and it's scary when it gets above 3k rpm and full throttle.

Re: Got a new car. TURBO!

glad to see your boosted, finally.

no HMT, but boost none the less. Throw a mbc on it, swap out your boost gauge to something that reads more the 8 psi. normally a boost map will adjust fuel accordingly to psi levels.

Nice car, not sure but I think the is300 has a variant of that automatic. Many guys that do 5 speed swaps use the manual out of that car too. Do you live here in Louisville?

I bought the car in Floyds Knobbs, and I live in Paoli, IN. not far from Louisville.. about 45 mins tops

yah it safe the stock ecu will compinsate for the extra boost as long as you dont get crazy and jack that ---- to the moon, ie just a few more lbs of boost will be a big difference, dont buy a embc, just geta mbc

Re: Got a new car. TURBO! *new pics*

I say toss the seats and get some nice aftermarket buckets and nice boost gauge and you should be set. That Supra looks mean the way it is now. Those look like some old school jdm rims. Maybe some old Volks or Works?

That thing needs new wheels ASAP

crxmatt2 03-15-2008 01:41 PM

Re: Got a new car. TURBO! *new pics*

yeah, the wheels are fugly as sin. Remind me of those 93ish Grand Prix wheels. hard to clean and just flat ugly. I have some motegi gunmetal wheels in the garage, w/ universal lugs but doubt they will fit..

stillnoturbo 03-15-2008 02:00 PM

Re: Got a new car. TURBO! *new pics*

I didn't think they were all that bad. Kinda go with the age of the car. I'm not big on new looking wheels on older cars. Just my preference.

if you think thats fast you're crazy :o

it'd be a lot faster if you didn't have such a little muffler on it.

put a bigger muffler and boost controller on it and find some mustang IIs to pick on

congrats on the car, i've been looking for one for the last month. i'm looking for a shell in good shape, but i don't want to pay what people here are asking.

oh and i joined a few supra forums and they all say that daily driving a supra is not that easy. it seems like they always break down.
if i ever get one it'll be my daily driver, but i just wanted to warn you.

see that's the problem, you've been confused by what rice is. honda tech and other sites like that will mess up your thoughts.
the exhaust you have now is not rice, it's hks. now if you drive like a ricer then that is a problem, but the exhaust on there now is not rice.

Change the coolant religiously. The first thing you should do is dump the coolant NOW, and lift the radiator off its mounts to check it's weight without the fan & shroud on it. If it weighs 20lbs it's fine. If it weighs 40-60lbs ditch it.
The head gaskets will not blow aslong as you NEVER let the engine overheat, and the bolts are installed correctly.

Here's the limit to what you can take a fresh CT26a too:
Attachment 19216

The problem with supra's is weight. However it's not car weight... The problem is how bad the i6's ------- suck. The total engine weights are all FAR over 500lbs (more than any production big block crate engine), while the recipricating weights are so far above nearly anything else you'l find, the actual rpm accelleration is pitiful. And the powrecurve itself is always horribly nothing. Horsepower is good, that's it.

The best thing you can do with a supra is do a small scale, big t3/t4 or small t4 swap to make your 450hp and leave it alone from there!

Freshen the body and swap the seats from anything else (almost all Toyota seats share frame rail mounting patterns btw) and it'll be pimping. Keep the wheels clean and bright and they look hot too.
