Last week I got fired from the job I've had for 13 years, although the last 6 have been under a new company that bought the old one. They got a new manager who said he was redefining my position, and I don't qualify, and they didn't want to give me a lower position with a large pay cut.
So my turbo project is on indefinite hold until I can find a decent paying job. It was already extemely slow because my wife has been unemployed for 4 years (permanantly laid off from the same place I worked) so I could only buy a piece here and there.

Senior tech for computer cash register systems. Made ~$20 an hour. I'm ready for a change, I'm kind of burned out I think, and I was in the middle of a plant where they also made plastic ID cards and credit card imprinters (noisy and unpleasant.)
It's going to be hard to find a job here though, there aren't a lot available. There have been a lot of large manufactoring plants that have closed in this area, and the former employees have taken technical classes (paid for by the government because the work went to Mexico and China) so they are after the same type of job now.

they cant just say you're job doesnt exist, you're fired.

If you get fired you dont qualify for Welfare. (if u need it, not saying you WILL/ nor DO).

if u get laid off then you qualify for welfare.

you live in VA there are plenty of jobs, just pick one you like
i started out moving cars around a VW dealer parts time when i was 19 (non education not even a GED) by the time i turned 21 i was making $36k/yr when i hit 22, $43k+/yr
there is plenty of $$to be made here, i will hopefully be making $55-60k when i hit 23 >:D

Sorry to be rude, but how the ---- do you stay unemployed for 4 years? seriously.... why not just get a job, any job, until you come across the ideal one youre looking for? I mean, atleast you'll have SOME kinda income, rather than that $200 a month government check... Im sorry, but i cant see goin for over a month without a job, ----, if a minimum wage job is all you can find, that better than nothing.

Damn, 13 years. :o This is definately the time to go find that job that you WANT to do. If it doesn't pay as much, work around it, but I'd go find something I loved to do after 13 years anywhere. Good luck

Yeah man, go into construction, something physical like that.

My bro works as a firefighter at an oil refinery around here. They're gett'n the shaft as far as money/hours (new managment). He had a small part time job installing counter-tops. He made like 16 bucks an hour just part time, but now he's thinking of quitting the refinery, and becomming a full time installer. Starts at 25 bucks and hour, there are some making upwards of 30-36 bucks an hour.

Supposidly he has a lot of fun, good guys to work with, and some good pay.

after 20 years in warehousing, I was fired 6 months ago. Been getting $325 a week unemployment which about = a $10 a hour job. Thats all that is out there anymore.

Figure I'm gonna find a 30 hour a weekjob, then do tranny work on the side, or go truck driving and make $40k a year. I'm not married and my son is almost 16.

The economy is gonna be rough the next 2 years, be ready to buckle down!

get drunk kick your boss in the snatch walk to the unemployment line sign up for some unemployment. take your unemployment check buy some coke cook it up and move det weight. train your wifey to turn some pseudophedrine into some ice. hustlin in the trap. after you hustle for long enough youl have a temurpedic mattress and a 300zx tt :P

na that realy sucks that you lost your job after 13 years. id atleast fight for it.try to make them make you qualified for the job there changing yours into or somthing else.

I don't know If it is the same every where, but in Illinois, you would definitely qualify for unemployment which can be quite a bit I got 250 a week for about a year when a very similar situation happened to me

how can u not work for 4 years. get off unployment u bobon couch eater and get a life. stop having everyone else take care of you. i can see a year being kool but 4 is a joke youe a drain to the ecomany then.

I'll probably be in the same boat as you tomorrow, my boss has been getting pissed off at me lately for not really giving a ---- about what hours he schedules me. It's a 6.15 an hour job, if I don't feel like working, I won't. Until they start giving me better wages they can expect a whole lot of nothing out of me. I plan on quitting soon if I'm not fired to find a job that pays better, minimum wage jobs suck.

Surprised no one commented on where those jobs went to. They went to Mexico and China. ------ ---- more jobs taken away from us and given to another country. When will this crap stop? We should see to our own country's good welfare before another country's.

Iceknight - First of all you only get unemployment for a few months (actually 16 in my wife's case, because she went to college and NAFTA, AKA "Send Jobs To Other Countries", extends unemployment and pays for tuition), so she is not having everyone else take care of her, except me I guess, or being a drain on the economy.
Also, 2 of those years were when she was in college, and it is hard (though not impossible) to work and attend classes at the same time.
Being fired from a job she had for 12 years (assembly line) really hurt her confidence, so she's having trouble getting out an finding another.
So don't be putting down my wife, thats one of the few things that gets me angry.

yes i know working and schooling is hard but my girl is doing both and showing horses at the same time.
thats 8 at work and 4 school and 4 for trainning and showing on weedends with cleaning stalls on weekend to

when i started working at teh dealer i work for now, i was still recovering from a severe drug abuse problem, overcoming a confidence problem has nothing on kicking an addiction

she's just got to pick herself up, kick her pride to the curb and get out and take what she can get.

Down here in fl it seems to me work is everywhere.I see a ton of help wanted signs and ads in the paper.I quit my last jobs due to better offers and currently work at one one day a month(to keep the employee discount ;)).My new job pays me a really good pay that can make it so i can finally afford a house.In the last 5 years i havent been over 2 weeks without a job and i dont see why anybody else should be.

We don't see the point in her going to college, then getting a job flipping burgers. What a waste of time. And not worth it, when you factor gas and frequent repairs to her heap of a car or car payments if we replaced it, we'd barely break even. Her time was more valuable working around the house. We were making it fine on my salary, I just couldn't afford to focus on what you all know is an expensive hobby. That was the whole point of my comment, that my project is on hold. Now that I'm not working, she will probably have to take a less than ideal job, and I'm sure she will. Forget it, think what you will, I done with this.

"^ Probably took your wifes and your job." Actually, my wife's job did go to Canada. They could pay them less per hour, plus at the time $1 USD = $0.60 Canadian, so what they did pay was worth less. Don't know or care what the current exchange rate is.
