fucking jet skis
I picked up a 88 Kawi 550 a week or two ago... it's got a different head, carb, intake, bla bla bla.
I took it out the first time and it ran good. It stalled every once and a while but I just needed to raise the idle a bit. Then it stalls once and the battery calls it quits. I bought a new battery later. I wanted to take it out today but it wouldn't start. It cranks over fine because I had it hooked up to the battery charger too. Every 5 ish seconds though it made a kind of chirp/---- you noise and it would stop turning over for a split second. Then I looked and it didn't seem that the fuel lines had anything in them. I pulled through some gas and tried to start it again but to no avail. I tried a couple times too spraying in starting fluid. I checked the plug wires and they are sparking. Why else would my ski not start? This is a 2 stroke by the way. |

is it a 2-stroke or 4-stroke? putting regular gas in a 2 stroke is a very bad thing.

it's a 2 stroke and it's got a 40-1 mix.
it might be flooded but I just tried it again and it was still not working. Also, I pulled the plugs and it was flooded but I burned out whatever was sitting in the cylinder and it still didn't start. The battery was a separate problem... just setting the scene. |

Does it have any compression? Might have broken a piston.

but it was working.... it worked, i changed the battery, it sat for a week, now it doesn't start

If it was hydrolocked it wouldn't be turning over. Take the spark plug out, crank it to see if any fuel flies out. Clean plug, reinstall. See if that does it.

ok... pulled the plugs and they were wet.... I put a lighter to the hole and burnt out the fuel sitting the cylinders. I tested the plugs and they are sparking. It still has that weird noise every so often but it's not at regular intervals at all. It's not even kicking like it wants to start.... My dad thought it might be a reversed firing order but there is no way that happened and the wires couldn't even reach the other cylinders.

turn it over with the plugs off and see if any water shoots out of the cylinders. Leave the plugs off over night.
After that, put the plugs back on, pull off the pulse line (comes out of the crank case and goes to the fuel pump) and while turning it over see if you can feel a pulse. If so pour some gas down the carb and try to start it. If it doesn't fire you either have a bad gasket somewhere or ignition issues. http://www.pwcforum.com/ ^this will answer all |

Maybe do a compression test while your at it. Couldn't hurt. If you aren't getting any compression your fuel won't burn and the engine won't fire.

you have to turn it over with the plugs out then put the plugs in |

The chirping noise you hear when your cranking it is probably coming from the starter.

go buy two new plugs, i bet you it starts up instantly...
once those two stroke plugs foul they're worthless unless you can clean the ceramic all the way to the bottom, even then they're worthless plugs are like 2 dollars. go buy some and it'll start |

my dad has a 95 440 suzuki powerd jetski. piece of ---- does the same thing like twice a year. usually end up taking the carb apart and cleaning it then it runs again for a while. its currently dead again and i me and him both just said ---- it

alright. and when I pull them off what exactly am I looking for.
* just pulled the carb and the little intake manifold off... sitting in the intake mani was a little pool of gas......... It looked like it was more towards the back cylinder but I think it might just be because the ski isn't completely flat. I put the carb and intake back on and it was kicking, shooting exhaust out, but not starting. Once I pull the intake, where are the reed valves and what would they not be doing? |

I'm pretty sure those kawa's don't use reed valves.

Do they use a rotary valve instead?
If it has reeds they will be right behind the velocity stacks and they are sort of a one way valve that is sort of triangular. |

ya... once the intake is off you can just see the pistons.
what does the pulse line do? it goes from the crankcase to the fuel pump...... it's not pulsing and I'd imagine that's not good. |

Oh I see. That pulse line is what "drives" the fuel pump.

Okay, I'm back. What did it comp. test at? Did you do one? You should be looking for about 120 (+/- 5) psi across the bank.
On a boat that old, I wouldn't be amazed if the crank seals are dusted. :-[ Do you need a walkthrough on a crankcase pressure test procedure? |

ok so I did a compression test and it's about 140 on both cylinders.
I checked the crankcase pulse line and I think the first time I just expected it to pull harder. I do feel a pulse. I try to crank it over and it kicks/shoots exhaust out but then it makes the awful screech sound and pauses for a second while im cranking. could it just be my starter? I have fuel, spark, and compression. It tries to start and just doesn't. I have no idea guys... help! I tried to start it up again and it's right there. The problem now is the screech sound it makes. It fires and almost starts and the sound just gets more frequent as it gets closer to starting. It's a really weird sound that's hard to explain but it happens and then the motor stops cranking over for a second. then it keeps trying to crank until it happens again. |

have you cleaned out the carbs yet?, or make sure there is no trash in the peacock(sp) the on and off switch?
have you tried to crank it with either yet? maybe a electrical problem? |
