They have a live webcam at the LHC so you can see what's going on, it's pretty sweet to see everything even if there isn't much movement sometimes.

The best things to come from experimental physics aren't necessarily the things they're trying to prove or disprove... the best things are developments in techniques, materials, and methods. Just building stuff like this and getting it to work as planned after doing a bunch of theoretical stuff is a feat. I'm talking about things like networking schemes, structural engineering, development of better conductors and microprocessors etc. However I think the biggest waste of it is how much energy particle physics uses, I don't remember the exact cost of running LHC per hour but it's a ton.
