fishing stories
Went fishing at the wharf yesterday at 10am using squid and pilchards.
At bout 11.30am my reel spooled like crazy and I hooked onto something that literally felt like a steamtrain on the end of my line.I tuned the drag to allow for the fish to run , but it just kept pulling like crazy and I could feel in the weight and sheer power of the fish I had no chance of reeling it in.Then next thing I know bang! Snapped line :S Figured it must have been a big shark or a stingray , by this time the adrenallin was turbo boosting through my veins ;D Next time I'm definately using steel trace , as it sux talking about the one that got away :P Fishing's like a natural high for me , anyone else got a story? |

Re: fishing stories
I love fishing. Best fish I ever caught was a big ass lake trout on a canoe trip in algonquin park. It was just me and my friend in the canoe paddling around the island we were camping on. I hooked it and set the drag and the thing pulled out until I had maybe 5 feet of line left and then it calmed down and I started to reel it in. My friend paddled for an hour and a half as I fought the thing. I usually catch and release, but we hadn't had any meat in two days. It was the best fish I've ever had. We broiled it in a pan with lemonade powder mix on top of it. DELICIOUS. try it some time.

Re: fishing stories
I was in Nags Head fishing off a pier when this little guy about 5'5" 150lbs hooks an 8' 400lb shark on 20lb line. I don't know how, but he fought the bastard for an hour or so and called his buddy up in Duck to bring him a gaff so they could pull it up. It took 6 guys to get it onto the pier. During the fight the shark wrapped the line around a pylon under the pier, so the guy climbed under the pier and shimmied around the pylon a few times to unwrap his line. Mind you this is about 1/8 - 1/4 mile out in the water, at night, water is very deep, and he has a huge shark on his line. There was nothing for his feet to sit on on the pylon, he suspended himself by his arms with the pole in one hand. Anyway when the shark was up on the pier some drunk dumbass was playing with it and almost lost his leg. A few days later I caught a stingray, not a skate we caught probably 50 of those in the week we were there. The stingray was 2-3x bigger than the skates and put up quite a fight. I can't wait to go back. I caught a flounder when we were chilling down on the beach at Oregon Inlet.

Re: fishing stories
Oh yeah I went with my dad's old company one year and caught a few rock bass and ----, nothing big though, it was only the Chesapeake Bay.

Re: fishing stories
Ultimate would be to land a big marlin , can eat from it for weeks :D
The rivers and lakes here are so poluted so saltwater fishing is the go around here , suits me fine :6 |
Re: fishing stories
I had swordfish one time, it made me sick for a week. It was caught fresh that day too. I think I'm allergic to that ----.
Oh yeah when the guy gaffed the shark on the nose to get a picture taken he stuck it in the eye which caused the shark to do a roll, much like a croc's death roll. This was a half hour or so after being on the pier. The guy that caught it and his buddy with the gaff dragged the shark down the pier while he was still fighting. |

Re: fishing stories
I went sturgeon fishing at bonneville back when i was a senior in high school. all day me and my buddy didn't get a sniff from them, so we decided to give it 30 more minutes and then bounce. so i reeled in and baited up and casted out. not more then 5 seconds later my pole starts to spool. i reach over and set the hook and a huge sturgeon tail comes out of the water about 15 feet off shore and 70 feet down from us and just soaks the ---- outa a bunch of asian people fishing. i was laughin pretty hard. I ended up fighting the fish for about an hour, first time it jumped outa the water i thought i had a ------ whale on. it jumped a couple more times before i got it right up to the bank. i got one good look at the bastard and the thing took off...it never stopped. ended up taking over 200 yards of 40lbs test off...i had no line left and i burned the ---- outa my thumb from keeping it from frying my reel. i'd say the fish was a good 200-300 pounder

Re: fishing stories
thick/long line, decent sized hook and btw even when we use worm as bait, everyone else gets the fish. I don't. lol Theres a lake right down the road from here that I used to fish at, and will more often now that we're getting a house by it... we'll see how piss poorly i do
|
Re: fishing stories
The only hook bait I would use for fresh water is chicken livers for cats. Everything else I use spinners like the rooster tail (which is btw my favorite of all time).

Re: fishing stories
how the hell can you tell the difference between any? :l
I've been fishing like maybe 4 times, never caught a fish but it was fun. All times I've gone out to Columbia River. just on the shore. I wish i had more money and a boat so I could do some real fishing. |
Re: fishing stories
hahaha you caught a gold fish, thats hilarious.
|
Re: fishing stories
I usually only fish for Rockfish in the Chesapeake Bay. Not the most rewarding place to go but is fun none the less.
I also participated in the White Marlin Open a few years back. Didn't get to fish but i was on the boat. The owner of the boat caught a Blue Marlin about 6' long took him about an hour and a half to pull it in. |
Re: fishing stories
I'm the type of person who cant ------- stand fishing, id be sitting there picking apart how inefficient it is using a hook and a string, then think of machines to kill the most fish as possible or throw explosives in the pond/lake. bah.

Re: fishing stories
I used to live on a lake, supposedly lots of good fish...all I ever got was sunnys :-\
Salt water fishing looks fun though. |
Re: fishing stories
Lol @ the goldfish.

Re: fishing stories
saltwater fishing is the ----. my boss owns a 55 foot charter boat that he takes us out on every once and awhile here in virginia beach. Tuna fishing is the best because a 25 pound yellowfin will put up more fight than any 40 pound rockfish. i love the thrashers. dolphin is a really fun fish to catch, pretty sweet lookin fish too. Heres a hint for dolphin if you guys ever go offshore, look for ---- floating in the water because they like to hang out by it for somereason. when you find one of these hangouts anchor your boat close buy and cut up some wahoo and start throwing it in. the first one you catch you keep in on the line in the water close to the boat because these fish hang together, once you got one they just start biting everything. i had one jump like 4 feet out of the water it was cool as ----. anyways here is a pic of an ok rockfish i caught last year.

Re: fishing stories
April is carp fishing time in the Genessee River here. Sucky part is that the gorge access is in the middle of the ghetto, and theres bum shanties on the riverbanks. Its worth it though, theres nothing like hooking 40lb carp on medium action tackle.
