first time at track, need help with slicks

okay i went to the track in my new car, eg hatch with only front seats and lexan windows, gsr, skunk2 manifold and was running 22x8x15 slicks. my 60 ft sucks balls and the lowest i could run it was a 15.4 when the old owner ran it 8.2 in the 1/8th mile. i would pull up to the water box and spin them a little, pull up about a foot out of the box and just burn them in second with the E-brake on until it started to pull me. let off, stage, and rev to 7000. green i would drop the 6 puck clutch and it would spin them and i would shift at around 85-9000 and it would bog to 3000 once in second then pick up from there. the other two runs i tried launching at 6000 and 6500 with the same result. anybody have a tips or advice on what psi or rpm to launch at?
my slip:
R/T .546
60' 2.632
330' 7.068
1/8 10.466
MPH 72.55
1000 13.314
1/4 15.493
MPH 93.46

please any help would be very helpfull :y

peg it off the rev limiter and use the ebrake to preload your suspension. :6 :6 :6

that is a consistant low, low 15 to high 14 time slip. i would suggest running on street tires and seeing what it will do. i know my old n/a 15.5 run was only at 88mph. but my 60 time was a 2.4. when i went turbo i never got a chance to run slicks so i cant be much of a help to you there. but i do knwo street tires are not somethign you want o launch hard with!

on 22" slicks u should be able to get at least 1.8 60' :-\ Do a nice fatty 2nd gear and u should be good to go. 2.6 60' would be shitty even on free beef tires :-X

Re: first time at track, need help with slicks

you need more practice- my first day at the track with my new car (and 1st fast manual car) about a week after buying it

EG Si
Full Interior
DC 4-2-1, 2.25" piping to stock muffler ( :X )
street tires (yok ES 100) on gsr webs
OBD-1 GSR w/ skunk2 IM

pulled a 15.7 by the end of the day, and before I put in the big cams I managed to pull a 14.8 out of my ass, but this was open header with no rear interior and I knew more about tire pressures and improved my 60' by a ---- ton

lexan windows and slicks? i say low 14 once you learn to drive it.

when you burnout on slicks, you BURNOUT. rev-limit clutch drop and keep it floored until you cant see out the side windows. and I don't think you full wrapped out 1st gear when you are shifting. a gsr trans going from 1st @ 8k to 2nd, shouldn't drop below 5k, with no bogging at all. on steelies i chirped 3rd gear pretty easily with the stock cams :6

Re: first time at track, need help with slicks

i might go friday again and work on the launch. i was shiftign at around 8.5-9 and it would just bog hard. the pressure is at 10 psi on the slicks. might try just launching off the rev limit :-\

Re: first time at track, need help with slicks

You are launchinf to high, I ran a 15.3 at 91 mph in CRX with a B18b, first time at the track, i tried to launch at 4k and did what you did a bogged into second, my last run for the 15.3 I still spun but I launched around 2k....I'd say start launching from @ and work your was up till you find a good medium, but its better to launch low than just spin your wheels, just takes some practice i need to go again, I'm hoping to get my times to 15 flat or high 14s with better launch and a good tune up which my motor needed bad ;)

whats the setup?? i hope its not turbocharged :P

Re: first time at track, need help with slicks

12:1 comp gsr, p&p, m24 cams, rmf header, skunk 2 mani. i think the rev limit is around 9 but it feels like it is making more power way up top, then i hit the limit once so i started shifting right before.

Ah yea I was on street tires, never ran slicks...but stillif you just spin would you be launching to high?

Re: first time at track, need help with slicks

no if you feather the gas you'll be okay. Sorry but those times are horrible for that setup :-\ is it spinning through first?? is the car tuned? whats the suspension setup? reason i ask is because i ran 13.8 @99mph with a bone stock h22 in an eg hatch on street tires.

MH's, and yeah i know that is horrible on that set-up thats why i am asking and posting this. before the headwork and cam it would run 1.7-1.8 60 foots.

plus it was hard enough to get it to the track driving it, trying not to get pulled over using th e"box me in" technique ;D

Re: first time at track, need help with slicks

Launch at 7000-7500 and if it is spining let the car catch up before you shift to second. I sounds like when you launch and it starts to spin so you grab second and then you bog because the car is only going a few mph. Just use the rev limiter in first. You should have at least 2.0 or better 60' times

Re: first time at track, need help with slicks

what do you mean by let the car catch up? i think that is probly what i'm doing because the rpm's would get way up there but the wheels are spinning.

he means when you launch in first. Rather than shifting when the car is spinning the tires. Wait till the car gets traction then shift into second or till the car gets to the desired mph.

Oscar 06-08-2006 10:04 PM

Re: first time at track, need help with slicks

lay off the gas some until you catch traction you knee grow. I say lets go make some practice runs down Occidental :D

Re: first time at track, need help with slicks

in that car with that setup ya that time and 60' sucks ass bad! I run low 14's in my ek 4dr man. with stock cams 12.5cr ls/vtec you need to lean how to lauch on that setup better. I would say around 7500 wot launch. you should run low 13's at least with that car. YOU ARE TUNED RIGHT? if not kiss that motor good by in a hurry.

Speedz 06-09-2006 12:15 AM

Re: first time at track, need help with slicks

damn jeff i dont know what you're doing..

you gotta be really agressive with a NA car.. its not like a boosted car..

i was getting 1.84's with that car last season with an internally stock GSR motor.. then i installed the b16 pistons, the m24 cams and dual valvesprings and TI retainers.. skunk2 cam gears.. and all the other listed above..
tuned it and my buddy was driving it while i was tuning.. that thing pulled like crazy.
if you let rpm fall to far between shifts, its gonna fall outta vtec.. you have to shift really quick .
i wish i could come up to yakima to drive it for u..

btw, for those who dont know, i just sold that hatch to Jeff.

i've tried lowering the tire pressure on those slicks.. but the 7" wide slip streams felt like they were wallowing in mud at lower than 10 psi.. i usually put 12 psi on driver side and 10 psi on passenger side.. were u getting a pegleg burnout or burning off both tires?
the 15.3 is a result of the 2.6 60'.. maybe if ur willing.. let Cesar or Kenny try driving the car a couple timess see how they do.

J-MAN 06-09-2006 12:51 AM

Re: first time at track, need help with slicks

they were both spinning, i would spin it quick in the water then roll out of the water the just roast them in 2nd until it pulled me forward with the brake on. i think i might need to try and just roast them off the rims but it would just pull me to the line, lol.

i will try and shift faster next time maybe that is the prob.

hey rick email me the .bin if you have it so i can raise the limit and burn to a chip.

what do you think would be the best shift point and rev limit without messing the head up?

Jeff, i'll send u the bin, i was looking at it tonight .. rev's only at 8500.. so i think 9200 should be fine with the built head..
vtec was coming in at 4800.. i'd raise that to 5200..

In my d-series crx I was running m/h 22x8x13's on lenso's with 9-10 psi and was only launching at 5800rpm and had 1.87-1.9 60 ft times. I dunno, 2.6 60ft sux balls even on street tires.

vtec change over at 4800 ?? thats low as ---- i would bump it up to 5500

J-MAN 06-10-2006 12:23 PM

Re: first time at track, need help with slicks

yeah it does seem low, wonder if the VTEC plug in for crome would help any. like make the disengage rpm alot lower then the engage :-\

the only car that i've seen make power at that low of a vtec change over was my buddies h22
