Evo or STI??
so im looking to buy a new ride that will be a daily driver and i can spend about 20k on it. I will not do any major mods as i need it to be reliable, so maybe exhaust and bolt ons but thats it. I can buy a brand new 08 wrx for 21k, but i would love to have an STI or Evo, but at 20k all the STI and Evo's I can find have between 50-60k miles on them. Im having a hard time deciding what to do, thanks for any useful input...

Where's the turbo D CRX option?

Re: Evo or STI??
1995 WRX Sport edition with the Japanese EJ25 Legacy motor.
I'm pretty sure that's the one with the stock billet crank and nitride coating ----. |
Re: Evo or STI??
the evo own the sti in all department
|
Re: Evo or STI??
Ihad a STi as a demo when I worked for subaru..
Fun car , but it wore off. As a daily Rode like ----.. Drank gallons of gas no matter how I drove it and gears were too short.. From a roll it wasn't as fast as you would think. |
Re: Evo or STI??
Subies + aftermarket exhaust = sexy sounds. No joke.
|
Re: Evo or STI??
Get a legacy GT My dad rocks one with Cobb Bars , Accessport and a K&N typhoon , it will hold it's own against a stock WRX with ease...

Re: Evo or STI??
Subaru's are great cars.

Re: Evo or STI??
Evo's look nice but the STI's sound so good!

Re: Evo or STI??
What's the matter? Oh yeah legacy gt's are cool too. The body styling on them is a ton better than the wrx and they still have the muscle with a little work.
|
Re: Evo or STI??
Around here you see WAY too many WRX & Sti's. I hardly ever see an EVO. I don't know ---- about the boxer engines, but you can't go wrong with the 4G63t.

08 WRX... :-X The new body style is really bland looking now. Remind me of some Korean sport/econo wagon/5dr hatch. You say daily driver now but all those little bolt ons add up and leave you wanting more. I'd go with a IS300. Classy but still sporty.

02-03 wrx ftw, only years subaru went with sti valve train on the lower model wrx's, just watch out for the ---- box, i mean gear box. Ive known of two people this year dropping second gear due to owning a car with a shitty gear box design.

Re: Evo or STI??
wat?
|
Re: Evo or STI??
He clearly stated that when the motor revolves at such high rpm, the valve train will permit the flow of the intake from producing higher volumes of air which will greatly reduce overall flow and prevent air from being circulated correctly to enter the cylinder at a preferred rate of speed and flow. It all depends on how well the harmonics workout at the desired level of distortion. I mean, let's face it, you're not going to be pulling VAC through the ports like you would on a pushrod motor, even if the combustion chamber was adusted to be proportionate to the structure and balance of the surrounding atmosphere. :-\

Re: Evo or STI??
wow people dont know what the ---- they are talking about. subies sound sexy with a turboback and i *guess* can be made decently quick with a turboback and cobb ecu. not quick enough for me, but fast enough for the average jim at least. evos obviously have much more potential in the long run. you can make 400whp reliabley all day long regardless of what anyone says. given that you said you want the daily drive it and will go only as far as bolt ons, i would probably pick the sti. i have driven both cars and will tell you that the evo is more rickity and getgo worthy while the sti is a bit more civil and comfortable. dont get me wrong, neither of the cars are comfortable, but the sti has a little more give than the evo. that is a fact. test drive both and make your own opinion. most people havn't driven both cars back to back so its not really fair to take their opinions into consideration.

Re: Evo or STI??
Bet you guys were just waiting for me to chime in on this one. ;D
As the owner of both an Evo 8 and an '04 Wrx, I can tell you both sides of the coin. My preference is still the Evo over the subie any day of the week. I daily drive my Evo, and other than the slightly stiffer suspension and low-mid 20~mpg fuel economy, it's an absolute blast. Both the Evo and the Wrx respond well to bolt-on mods, however the evo takes to them like a duck to water in comparison. What other car could you bolt on a cat-back, dp, and cat delete and gain over 40+hp? Yes, a stock Evo is a dog in comparison to most boosted honda's, but put a little work and money into it and you can run 12's in no time with just bolt-on's and tuning. Either way, if you stick to Evo 8's and 9's you can re-tune them yourself, and the same with '07 and down Wrx's and Sti's using the same reflash program (I started a little write-up in the Engine Management section on this). Yes, Wrx's have that sexy exhaust sound, but I'll tell you right now they're a pain in the ass to work on. The only easy part to put on them is the cat-back. Downpipe sucks to do, up-pipe is an even worse nightmare, and for some cold-air intake setups you have to take the front bumper off the car to install them. You feel and see a gain after those couple of parts, and tuning helps them even more, but at that point you'll still only see around 200awhp if you're lucky. Compare that to my Evo stomping out over 350awhp and you can see where the difference is. Also, the stock Evo 8 motor can take upwards of around 450awhp abuse before you need to start upgrading rods and pistons, the EJ20's max is around the 300hp mark and has a semi-closed deck block design unlike the Evo's closed deck cast iron block. Sorry to seem biased towards the Evo, but IMO it's a much better platform to build off of and has proven results over and over again. If you have any more questions feel free to ask me. ;) P.S. Stay away from the '08 Sti's for a while. ;) |
Re: Evo or STI??
I still don't understand how people think the flat four sounds good. Not trying to knock anyones tastes but a wrx sounds like a retarded lawnmower if you ask me.
