Ever notice improper PCV ventilation?
 

Hey there everyone, do you ever notice that in just about every single turbo honda engine shot the PCV valve is still hooked up to the intake manifold? I really don't get it. For the first day of being boosted I had that thing still hooked up and I could feel that something wasn't working right, so when I hooked it up to a catch can and routed it properly, my engine revved much more freely and sounded a lot happier at higher R's.
So, my question here is. Why isin't proper PCV ventilation for a honda stressed more? its such an important part. I have read many pieces of information regarding blown up hondas due to lack of ventilation of the crank case.
Lets hear it from you guys, any stories/comments anyone wants to share on this subject?

i've only read like one thread about it anywhere so i never thought it was tooo important. i'm naturally aspirated currently, but the hose rotted off so there is no vacuum and hasn't been in over half a year... am i causing damage to my engine?

its good to have vacuum in your crankcase but never do you want positive pressure existing in there. I have heard of some people just leaving it open to the atmosphere but this is not a very good idea in my honest opinion, its good to be getting those vapors out of the crankcase. I suggest going to the parts store and ask to take a look at their rubber hose selection and replace the rotted hose. Untill you are boosted, thats how its meant to be. You are probably sucking in unfiltered air into your intake manifold as well, which can lead to (in a rare instance) engine damage, but usually its just excessive build up inside of the manifold.

cool thanks for the advice... the seperator to pcv hose broke. the pcv to mani hose is plugged. and the build up inside the mani is normally due to the breather from the valve cover to the intake tube.

MY shitbag mechanic swapped my odb2 b18b valvecover for a b18a one. So now I have NO pcv valve on my vc, therefore...something. Now the little tube coming out of the head spews oil into my intake. Yummy.

if it was me I would go back to that mechanic and get your money back or purchase a used one on good old ebay and then sell the one you have back on ebay and possibly get back the cash u spent.

eh

i vent the crankcase to the atmosphere.

shouldn't matter unless you're running a lot of boost and getting a lot of blow-by from the lots of boost.

if you're gettin blow-by and you're just sprayin it all over your engine or your firewall or what have you, the only thing that is going to be damaged/pissed off is some whiney liberals

That article says something about taking the PCV valve out and replacing it with a 90º fitting. I've never fucked with my PCV before but where would you find a fitting that would perfectly replace the PCV valve?

Why wouldn't it be okay to leave the valve in and just route it to a catch can rather than the intake manifold, then just add a breather to the valve cover?

Personally I think putting a 90 in there is a little pointless as well, if the PCV valve isin't functioning right I would just drill it out and use the body rather than tracking down some useless piece, or simply route to the catch can BEFORE the PCV valve and save cash and time if you don't want to use it.

I like to have all orifices leading directly to the inside of my engine blocked off from little critters though, I remember what happened to Jeffs brother's VW vanagon. You really never know what will crawl into the inside of your engine and get chewed up and clog everything up the next time you start your engine. Chances of something climbing in is very unlikely, but since seeing that VW I take no chances with my investment.



How do we make people running the boost more aware that its necessary to remove the PCV valve line from the intake manifold? Open atmosphere/Catch can doesn't matter just as long as the PCV valve isin't seeing positive pressure.

eh my pcv valve sees positive pressure daily on my mustang. its supposed to close when you put pressure on it, i tested mine with my mouth, i could blow real hard and get some to barely go past.all that pressure just goes through the engine and out the valve cover
