Educated suggestions for Big Block Turbocharger selection.. KTHX
SO Americana freaks... Im Pondering... looking seriously at changing camps... Hopefully the Accord sells soon.
I actually need help. I need to be educated on large frame turbochargers for 400+ CU in motors. Dont need any BB ----, BUt want to make 600-700 WHP on a 413 CU IN MOPAR. Yup... Mopar. The Possibility: Have a 413 Wedge motor with about 1K on it. HOPING it has forged pistons. Its gonna have a 727 behind it... with a Dana behind that... Probably ladderbars and coil overs.. 8 Pt + connectors. 12" Tire . Im thinking EMS ---- will be aftermarket "EFI" Aluminum manifold and megasquirt. Thinking 6K redline at most. Car will be light. http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f4...e/DSC00132.jpg http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f4...opile/413a.jpg http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f4...pile/Trany.jpg http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f4...le/Inside1.jpg OPen and waiting... Re: Educated suggestions for Big Block Turbocharger selection.. KTHX
For the Holset camp, I would look at an HX-60 (a little big for what you need, but gives you some room to grow) or a pair of HX-40's with T4 hot sides, anything T3 is too small, and too restrictive for that kinda cubes. In the Garrett camp for that HP range I would look at GT42 T6 hotside, off of Detroit series 60's.
I believe you can get either borg or holsets in the HT3B variety, or the Turbo from a CAT C7, there is one more that is on the tip of my tongue, but I don't seem to be able to spit it out. With those cubes and those power goals, at this point any truck turbo from an engine 14L - 16L, 70mm - 80mm inducer should work great. |
Re: Educated suggestions for Big Block Turbocharger selection.. KTHX

S400 series dollar for dollar can't be beat. Check this build up: S400 turbo, 60mm Chinese wastegate, Ebay Intercooler http://www.theturboforums.com/smf/in...?topic=84871.0 5.45 in the 1/8th = 8.50 in the 1/4, if not faster as the power comes on hard up top when that car is hooked. Whats the Car, A body with Electronic ignition, you find yourself another Dart sport? Maybe we will bring my brothers car out on the 18th so you can see it and how easy it is go go fast in the right platform. |

Hey BDVT, this is Andrew, Dustins brother with the Turbo Dart.. couple comments and suggestions...
First of all, WTF kind of heads are those on that 413? They are not normal bigblock Mopar heads.. Second, the 413 is an odd engine to start with, very very rarely used by anyone trying to make power.. im guessing the old 413's used a different type of head, but if thats the case, I would DEFINITELY steer clear.. If your gonna go bigblock, id look at building or buying a 451, which is a lowdeck 400 stroked with a 440 crank.. they are light rotating assembly, short block for easier packaging, good rod ratio, biggest bore of any factory motor, and can make a ton of power. That being said though, why not stick to a smallblock? I thought my brother said you already had a trans for a smallblock laying around anyways.. and 408's are pretty much the regular occurence in Mopar land anyways. 360 with a 4 inch crank, waa lah, 408 inches of goodnesss... ALOT lighter, and big inches really arent needed with a turbo car as you are well aware.. Just as a told my brother to post, the BW S400's are a killer deal for the money, and if I ever sell my kit, i'll probably build a kit based on one... If you wanna chat about more Mopar turbo specifics, call my brother and get my number.. id be happy to chat your ear off... |
Re: Educated suggestions for Big Block Turbocharger selection.. KTHX

Re: Educated suggestions for Big Block Turbocharger selection.. KTHX
They are MAX wedge heads... My dad has the original long tube X rams for THOSE heads (they wont work with the regular BB Mopar heads if I remember correctly, its been a LONG timne) with all the original linkage, carbs, etc.... The Max wedge heads are different than the normal RB heads....
I was thinking put dual throttle bodys on the x rams like this: http://www.rancefi.com/HeavyGraphics/FI_X_Ram.jpg But a couple LSX ones instead, regardless you get the idea... With dual snails..... Heres more: https://farm1.static.flickr.com/60/1...e4d866.jpg?v=0 Ill take pics of the intakes when i visit him tomorrow. His setup came out of his old 300 wagon, and hes held onto the induction..... Im not done with the jap car though yet.... Im stubborn, And want to walk your dart in it yet. O0 |

Re: Educated suggestions for Big Block Turbocharger selection.. KTHX
Look at the exhaust flange in your first post, and then look at how the exhaust mounts on the long ram engine you just posted. The upper pic flange faces downward, while all normal BB mopars, including max wedges, are a flat/ straight up and down flange. That Top head is NOT a max wedge head. Yes, your right in the fact that max wedge heads have a different port opening on the intake side, so they require a MAX WEDGE intake, but im 99% sure the exhaust flange is typical BB mopar, which is not what those top heads are.
But your not building one anyway, so it doesnt matter. |

Whatever you do, Spiker, don't run a dinky ass T67. That's a tiny streetcar turbo targeting the 4 cylinder crowd.
