Eating healthy...... getting fat is overrated

This is my first year in college and the freshman 15 is owning the ---- out of me.

I used to play hockey 4 times a week and worked out once a week or so.

Now I sit around a lot and hold down my couch.

I've been working out a bunch and going to the gym 3 ish times a week, I want to get in better shape though. My diet is awful and i want to make it better. I buy my own food by the way (im not in a dorm)

I don't want to spend more than is necessary on food and i want to buy stuff that will last. (as opposed to a box of hot pockets that will go missing in a week)

Whats some good food to buy thats relatively easy to prepare and is better for me than nachos and chilli?

Apples are super easy.

Freshman 15 hit me the first semester. McDonald's being right by the campus sucked for my body hahaha.

Really, just buy some fruits and snack on them.

Have you not seen Murdoc's cooking threads?

This the wrong place to be asking for healthy food recipes

Google some recipes!

Carbohydrates and Proteins.

Pasta/chicken/vegetables/fruits make up a lot of my diet. Besides the occasional fast food I have.

Weight lifting is going to do next to nothing if you're getting fat. You need to keep your body in an aerobic state a few times a week. Try to do an hour a day, three days a week. Lifting will bulk you up, but it just takes up your glycogen stores if you don't keep your heart rate up. Once your body goes into an aerobic state, you start to burn fat. Ever seen a fat runner/swimmer?

On a regular day I limit my fat intake to <10%. I eat a ton of protein since I lift 4 days a week. I typically run 5-7 miles a week as well. I'm sitting at 5' 11", 195 pounds and 8 % body fat.

I got back to my HS weight by cutting carbs and doing nothing. Which still makes me a fat-ass, but like 27% less of one now.

Go buy a nutrition book and learn about how your body works. It's quite simple, really.

research the okinawan diet. Tonight I had some seaweed stuff, a chicken cutlet, some steamed veggies and of course some rice. I also grabbed a package of sushi, but I think I will eat that tommorow for lunch.

Japan has the most people over 100yrs old out of any other country in the world. I had some little old japaneese lady tell me 'Japaneese food very good for you, keeps eyes healthy and you strong'. Its really werid how different people think about what they eat. Americans worry about there weight and cholosteral, JDM people worry about there entire body. Thats probably why 80yo JDM women will get out and walk everywhere. :S My 80yo granny sits in her chair most of the day.
-------------------
nahh...but I know you probably cant get asain food (which I will miss when I leave here) pick up fruits, chicken is always good, rice, tuna, steaks...you would be suprised what you can cook on a forman grill and a rice cooker!

I love scrambled egg in white rice with a little soy sauce on it...dam, that shits good. :y

He needs complex carbohydrates if he's going to be doing any type of work. Protein is only there to rebuild muscle, as it's a terrible source of fuel in the ATP cycle.

Only eat low fat, high protein foods, integrate complex carbohydrates while keeping non-natural sugars on the low. Fructose and lactose are okay for you, but don't go crazy. Make sure you get a lot of insoluble fiber as well.

just watch your intake. eat a good breakfast (egg, oatmeal, cereal) and then eat small meals every 4 hours till dinner. buy a bag of frozen chicken, that lasts a long time and is versatile and cheap. vegie's and fruits in morning and lunch, not much for dinner, too much sugar in fruits.

and you dont want no carbs, you need carbs, your brain needs carbs to function. just dont over do it. as long as you watch your calorie intake, you're golden. as long as you burn off more calories than you intake, you will lose weight, guaranteed.

you can eat mcdonalds every day and lose weight if you burn more calories than you put into it. but, your body will be unhealthy as shite. a few things to get kick started. omega3 fatty acid, multivitamin, fat burner (lipo-6/hydroxycut, for one month only) to start giving your body a boost.

and to lose fat, you need to be aerobically exercising, meaning cardio, you need to keep your heart pumping at above a certain level (depends on your body) to burn fat. there are a lot of calories in fat so its hard to really break it down.

i took in prolly zero carbs for a month and a half to drop wieght to 154.6 to fight in lightwieght now that im try'n to lift and get bigger im back up to 178, you dont need carbs for energy just take diet pills or a suppliment like it, www.fitnessone.com has the best prices on supplements ill recomend the no explode for getting a few extra rep out, im not big but i've went fro average 166 down to 154.6 now back up to 178, i wanna be around 200 though..lol i take no explode before i work out and that ---- rocks, gives you the extra boost you need and makes you sweat quite a bit more too. seems like your lacking energy along with not eating proper foods, this will help out alot http://www.fitnessone.com/product_re...roducts_id/495
also if you try'n to lean out wieght lifting is a horrible way to do so, you need to do ALOT of jump ropping and running along with crunches and pushups, i bet if you go to a more millitary work out you'll get what your looking for. stay away from carbs ( bread, pasta, rice.)

And I bet you lost quite a bit of your muscle too.

Supplements are just a poor excuse for not eating right. I'm not saying carb load like sprinters do or what not, I mean don't leave them out. Obviously protein should be your number one source for calories, but carbs shouldn't be behind fat at all. Don't eat shitty carbs like white breads and other processed carbs. Get whole grain and complex carbs. They metabolize better in your system than processed ---- does, thus they are better for you. You should NEVER eliminate carbs unless you want to lose muscle mass.

I put on about 8-10lbs so far, but I workout and it's the "good" kind of weight gain. ;) Although, I noticed at points some weight I gained made my tummy a little softer, but I'm doing alright now as I have a pretty decent diet. This is the most weight I gained since I started lifting years ago, so I'm not complaining, thank God I need it.

Re: Eating healthy...... getting fat is overrated

Eating a balanced diet isn't rocket science. Go to a book shop and buy some cookery books. I'd recommend a woman called Delia Smith (kinda like Martha Stewart, but without the fraud).

Cooking and eating are fun, eating a healthy balanced diet is easy once you learn to enjoy a variety of different foods and fresh produce. There's no point focussing hard on any dramatic weight loss, because unless you change your lifestyle to suit, once the diet stops the weight will go back on.

5 portions of vegetables a day, a large glass of milk, combined with protein and carbohydrates keep me a respectable 180lbs at 6'2" and i have the freedom to eat junk whenever i want, i just prefer not to.

Re: Eating healthy...... getting fat is overrated

OK im not an expert but I just recently lost 50 pounds.
www.bodybuilding.com has TONS of good information.

The key is to eat small portions around 6 times a day and base most of the meals on protein, some vegetables.
NO SODA!!! LOTS OF WATER!
fish, chicken, beef, and pork in EVERY MEAL.
TAKE a multivitamin.
don't eat any carbs after 8 pm if you go to sleep around 10 pm
after doing this for a wile you wont want to eat junk food any more.
oooo light beer or liqueur = no carbs ;D is always good to normal beer.

The thing is you probably wont have to do all of this, but I had to rethink my entire way of life and im happy i did because getting up in the morning and knowing your not a fat peice of ---- anymore is a awesome feeling. Trust me
I allso gained more muscle faster this diet, HIT THE GYM

It matters how much you want to lose and how fast. Exercising is always good for losing body fat but not physical mass.
meaning you wont lose weight, just fat.

cardio + eat less calories than you burn = weight loss
that easy. you just experianced what happens when you eat the same way to did when you use to do stuff LoL! Atleast you figured out you were really gaining weight b4 you were 30 & +50lbs.

he's lost about 20lbs since christmass eating right & boxing with his wife on their wii an hour every night. food for thought. lmao ANYTHING but sit & lay around. if you wanna sit & lay around alot, better get use to eating something like 2 bowls of cearal + supper 'cause you'll keep putting that weight on.

Take up smoking. You'll lose your appetite. ;) ----, I haven't fluctuated in weight at all since high school (almost 21 now). Im 5'8 155lbs with decent muscle. When I was in basic I gained 20 lbs (175) of muscle but I lost it due to inactivity.

I'm at 5'8" and ~185lbs. I'm not fat and I'm not skinny, but I think I'm getting a beer belly. I tried to watch what I eat, but I like to eat and I enjoy eating the foods I want to eat so I think I'm either going to A) Get fat or B) Buy some sort of total gym thing and workout at home. I really don't mind working out at all. I used to workout 5 days a week and I gained a serious amount of muscle(for my size). I just hate having to go to the gym. It's like a chore. If I had something at home I would use it, but I don't so in 5 years I won't be able to see my feet. :l

My diet is composed of Fruits, vegetables, meats and supplements like Protien weight gainer. I gained 10lbs of muscle in 2 months by working out daily. I'm now 6"0 200lbs and in just 2 months I went from a 13.5" arm to a 15" arm. Goals for next year are to be 225-230 with 18" arms and 50" chest.

Just work out a lot, eat lots of protiens and carbs, gets lots of sleep and drink lots and lots of water. This is what I do and it works for me.

get a job. but not fast food. and one that makes you work. you wont have to go to the gym if your body is to tired after a full day of work(if your work makes you work with your body). but running would be a good suggestion after or before work. or on the weekend. im not fat but i lost weight when i started my new job. doing 4-10's of building 80foot and 125 foot mainlifts. i make the axils for all the big Genie manlifts. keeps me in shape. i just need to start running to get in prime shape and maybe alittle workout on the weekend

it's hard for me considering I live in my gf's dorm and have a full time job.

running is also a thing i gota get worked up to do. It's still cold as ---- where I live, so that doesnt really help me out much.

I'm 5'9'', 250 ish. :( I'm only 19 and already having chest pains.
