dvd byrning problem

im haing a problem burning dvds all the sudden. my laptop will get 99 percent throguh with it and tell me an error occured and it couldnt be burned. it started out just skipping a little in movies that were burned, now it wont burn them at all. i have adjusted the burn speed to slow, i also bought a different brand of dvd-r's. i cant figure this out. im using a gateway m1617. im using windows dvd maker as the program. the laptop is only almost a year old now. help me out.

Re: dvd byrning problem

Do you know what kind of drive it is? I have a Sony DVD-RW that's a couple years old and it can't read or write CD-R's and will only burn DVD's at the slowest speed. Sony drives are known for having shitty laser that burn out.

Re: dvd byrning problem

no i dont but its the stock drive that came with the laptop. ill google it real quick and try to figure it out.

Re: dvd byrning problem

burners die sometimes

you might just need a new one

I've had 3 optical drives fail but never had a harddrive go out

Re: dvd byrning problem

Can the drive even be replaed on a laptop? And how much are they?

RotaryGeek 08-26-2008 02:24 PM

Re: dvd byrning problem

can someone tell me if this external drive is compatable with my comp? im def not computer savvy, i just figured out utorent a little while ago. If it will work for my comp, ill buy it. But if my drive is bad, will it still read regular cd/dvd's? If it won't, will this drive do that for me?

Re: dvd byrning problem

it uses usb so yes it should work.

you can replace the drives (it's a computer, just smaller), and can probably find them cheap on egay

Re: dvd byrning problem

like he said, you just gotta make sure it fits

Re: dvd byrning problem

i was under the impression that since it was a laptop that it was just kinda shitty luck if something goes out. do they make replacement drivs for laptops?

do I have to repeat myself?

you can buy some on egay

I just ripped one out of a hp that was destroyed in a car accident, I'd send it to you but it's bent out of shape

I do however have two 1gb sticks of ram and an amd turion x64 dual core proc you can buy

Re: dvd byrning problem

he's right.
you can find them other places, but they cost alot.
i was looking into upgradeing mine in my old toshiba, i said ---- it and bought a cheap external for $80 like 4 years ago

Re: dvd byrning problem

lol thanks but no thanks, just need a dvd burner. So when you mean make sure it fits you mean inside the laptop? Im guessing not, looks like it just sits next to it or wherever its convienient.

Jorsher 08-26-2008 05:45 PM

Re: dvd byrning problem

Yeah thats what i figured. I think ill just go with external though, i don't want to void my warrenty in case something i really care about breaks, and i don't want to risk cracking open my computer with my skills. So about the one i found on new egg, Is it good? Or should i keep looking?

try differnt software before you buy anything.

What software are you talking about? Point me to it. I tried to update my driver, but it says i have the best driver available.

Yeah i don't know what that means, but ill look.

Re: dvd byrning problem

if it worked fine in the past and isn't working now, and you're using the same media/software, then it's most likely a hardware problem and you'll need a drive.

Firmware might help, but doubtful

Re: dvd byrning problem

not saying Jorsher is wrong.....

but it could be a software problem. as if MS software never becomes corrupt.

besides, getting a cracked DVD burning software literally takes a couple mins of time for DL and install and cost $0.00

its worth a shot IMO

Didn't say don't try it, I would if I was in that situation, and hell...I told him to try a firmware (software)

Just saying, wouldn't surprise me if it was hardware.

Does it fail with all software? have you changed media brands?

it wouldnt surprise me either if it were a hardware issue.

i'm just trying to point out that I personally would try everything else before spending money on a laptop dvdr drive.

if you have never taken apart a laptop, i wouldnt recomend doing it, especially on one that may be your daily user computer. there are a LOT of things you can ---- up. its not like a PC.

some laptop drives are much harder to replace than others. Some are as easy as pushing a button to eject the drive (like Dell)

I'd try everything else first as well, it just seems like it's a sudden problem and happens intermittently.

We just dismantled an HP laptop the other day. What a bitch.

Re: dvd byrning problem

Yeah i don't plan on tearing into my laptop. It is my daily use computer, besides my dads desktop. I will just be buying an external dvdr drive. I googled m1617 firmware and m1617 software and didn't find anything usefull. But ill try anything, so if you can find something that might help, post up.

if you have a warranty that you are worried about voiding, then why don't you call your equipment manufacturer??? if your laptop is under warranty, they will send you a new one.

ahhh, no not quite.

what they will most likely do if its under warranty is issue a repair auth # for you to take to the "nearest authorized repair person". then you would turn your computer in to that repair place, then wait a couple weeks, then get it back.

Actually i emailed gateway about it, and they said that they will send me a new drive (after i complete some test things they need to make sure its the drive) and charge me $75. Then once i get it, i can take it somewhere to have it proffesionally installed and ship back the old drive and they will refund my $75. So thats what i will probably do when i get paid. Hopefully i get paid tomorrow since the last days of the month are a weekend and the first is a holiday. Gotta love direct deposit.

i guess we will have to agree to disagree then.

i had nothing but problems from nero when I got it with the DVD burner i bought, got dvdfab and never had issues and burned well over 100 dvd movies with it.

MAJORAHOLE 08-28-2008 01:47 PM

Re: dvd byrning problem

see, i had the exact oposite. nero was perfect for me, dvdfab wouldnt burn right

jo_gobel 08-28-2008 02:37 PM

Re: dvd byrning problem

dont get me wrong, i use Nero for EVERYTHING else but DVD Movie burning.

I love Nero for everything else, but the DVD movie burning wasnt at all plesent and the quality of the burn wasnt up to par for me. It was very jumpy and "locked" up when playing a DVD in my DVD Player for my TV.

but I have never had an issue with burning anything else with nero (data cd's, music cd's, mp3 cd's, and data DVD's), just no movies.

RotaryGeek 08-28-2008 03:33 PM

Re: dvd byrning problem

well i did the test thinks. i had to download some file and save it to my desktop, then extract it and try to burn an image to a disc with power2go. it failed the burn. so i reported it back to the gateway rep and im waiting on his email. i wonder how much its going to cost me to have this one swapped out with the new one they send? im def going to take it to a shop to get done.

MAJORAHOLE 08-28-2008 07:48 PM

Re: dvd byrning problem

im sure you could do it. it should just have some screws to take out then you just slide the old one out, and the new one in

losesomethinbra 08-29-2008 04:25 AM

Re: dvd byrning problem

i think a lot of people have problems with the vista dvd maker, but what a sweet program if it worked. i got it to work sometimes by burning at like 1x or 2x even though my dvd-rs say 8x

Jorsher 08-29-2008 11:16 AM

Re: dvd byrning problem

Honestly the drive was the easiest thing to get out of that last laptop I fucked with. We took off one plastic cover from the bottom, took off a couple more screws, and the drive slid out. Took 2 minutes tops.

I have used nero for everything since CD burners were $250 for a 2x burner (but I made some mad cash in school selling them, thanks napster O0).

I haven't burned a video dvd in a year or two since I just store all my media on my harddrive now, I forget what software I used but it wasn't nero.

For copying dvds I use dvdshrink and ripit4me for lionsgate movies that dvdshrink can't rip.
