does anyone else break stuff every time.....

every time i do something major to my car, i break stuff, i actually make sure that i have money to spend before i do anything major b/c i know i'm going to break something, it's not a matter of 'what if', but more like 'what will it be this time'. this weekend i pulled my engine to fill my motor mounts with poly urethane and put in a clutch. the victims of this procedure were as follows. ::)

bent ball joint bolt (don't ask)
broken radiator fan shroud
bent shift linkage
broken tps

all in all, i'd say i'm pretty gay. the conclusion i've come to as to why stuff always gets broken, is due to lack of proper equipment. when resources are low and you have to work with what you got, stuff gets broke :P

uhh

I usually dont break ---- unless I am pissed off. Usuaully a wrench will get thrown across the garage and ---- like thta when it isn't working right or making sense for that matter.

how the ---- did you fuckup your ball joint?

they are somewhat expensive, like $50 lol...

nayways

---- happens

accually, when tommy, the guy in the green hatch rebuilt his motor, we did everything perfectly, took lots of time, used all the right tools even wore latex gloves when working with new parts...did everything perfectly. then when it came time to install it, we broke the vtec solonid, and something else to, i dont remeber. so as the old saying goes...
---- happens.

Re:does anyone else break stuff every time.....

bent the ball joint bolt b/c i couldnt' get the ------- thing seperated from teh control arm, so i got pissed and smaked it up from the bottom, well, then end of the bolt is hollow for the cotter pin, so it smashed and bent it :P i just cut it off with a hack saw right above it and the bolt threaded right on, just no cotter pin now :-\ bent the shif linkage putting the motor back in b/c i couldn't get the 'bitch pin' out, so i just pulled the linkage out with the motor and dropping it back in posed a litt more difficult, and it bent the end a little bit, i just bent it back, no big deal. broke teh fan shroud by hitting it with the slave cylinder when pulling the engine, i heard it starting to crack, but i was so pissed off already, i just ripped the engine out anyways and destroyed it. broke the tps by smashing it against the firewall putting the engine back in. i have an extra one, so no big deal. so, out of these occurances, the fan shroud is the only one that's going to cost anything.

Go put some ------- locktite on that nut otherwise don't drive the car, I almost died from the ball joint dropping out of my car. There was naother guy on here that got into an accident becuase his ball joint broke.

that bitch pin has never been much of a problme for me, i got a perfect punch for it and she slides right out

projekteg 10-04-2004 08:15 AM

Re:does anyone else break stuff every time.....

i put gasket sealant on the nut, i think it will work as good as lock tite.

Should take the rad out before the motor. ;)
oh, and you should definately get a new ball joint.

i have a ball joint seperator, but it wouldn't seperate, that's why i was pissed.

spent 30 minutes trying to get the pin out and said ---- it. (to this day, i've never got one out successfully)

yeah, i should have taken it out, but it looked like it would clear fine, 2 seconds to remove the 1 bolt holding it in would have prevented this :P

---- that ball joint in the ass.

two things...go get a new ball joint before you die, and you can leave the bitch pin in there if you unhook the other end of the linkage, thats what i always do

#1... dont halfass ball joints/critical suspension components or brakes... these will save your ass when you do stupid things.
#2. I break stuff all the time, i destroyed 2 motor mounts in my accord (bottom tranny mount on crossmember and front mount broke in half) oh well shes home for now.

projekteg 10-04-2004 11:20 AM

Re:does anyone else break stuff every time.....

you think lock tite will be sufficient on the ball joint? i mean, it's on there tight, just doesn't have the cotter pin. you would think if they moved, the cotter pin would be wedged in there when you went to take them off, i've never seen this happen before leading me to believe, they don't move, but the cotter pin is there just in case, so i could use lock tite 'just in case' right :-\ ---- a new ball joint, i'd rather die in an accident caused by the broken one.

my balljoint blew on the highway and i majorly fuxored my car

Last week I over tightened the camgear bolt on my ZC and broke it, that took a huge chunk out of the day.

i usually break stuff too so don't feel like your the only one, but most of the time i just strip the ---- out of bolts.

Honda16hb 10-04-2004 12:34 PM

Re:does anyone else break stuff every time.....

I alway break something when I'm doing something I haven't done before, first time I changed my oil I stripped the bolt by tightening it too much so the threads were fuxored. right now I have 3 distributors sitting next to me, 2 obd0 and 1 obd1, the idea is to put the insides from the obd1 into one of the obd0 bodies. so far I've stripped the heads on 2 screws, but I got them out, my goal is to finish the project without breaking anything else, this requires me to spend some money on one of those things that you hit with a hammer and it turns the screw, I'll do it just so I don't break ---- and end up spending more money.

kevin #2, I rolled around without cotter pins in my ball joints for about a month after my b16 swap, then I put them in, is it really worth the damage to your car and the injury you and your family will sustain if your balljoint breaks, or the nut comes off? what if your daughter is in the car when that ---- lets lose and she gets injured or killed, is your $50 or whatever ball joint worth that much to you? I'm ghetto up to the point where safety is compromised, if my safety is put in danger then I'll do it right.

J-MAN 10-04-2004 12:39 PM

Re:does anyone else break stuff every time.....

yeah broken ball joints suck, i broke mine on my lowrider one day while i was hopping down the street and my car landed onto the rim face down. talk about shitty.

87na_rx7 10-04-2004 01:02 PM

Re:does anyone else break stuff every time.....

sometimes i break ---- but for the the most part i dont. I just dropped a tranny and changed out a clutch, the only thing i fucked up was the pass cv joint. That bitch didnt wanna come out now the nut dont wanna go on... but a quick hit with the file and it will be ok.

Now who has extra bolts when they are done working on their car?

and replace the clutch. you know of a better way to fill all the mounts at once ???

Re:does anyone else break stuff every time.....

Never tried to remove the rear mount with the engine still in the car. I don't know if that's possible. But the other 4, sure, just support the engine from underneath and the mounts remove straight out. The engine is reinforced enough by filling the front 4 mounts that i've never thought it was worth it to fill in the rear.

Ball joints are scary. I hate those damn things. Every vehicle I drive has fresh balljoints. :)

if you dont feel like pressing it out you can beat it out with a hammer, just remove the clip first with some snap ring pliers. Then beat the new one in since i dont think it hurts it to hit it from the flat side.

Re:does anyone else break stuff every time.....

Definatly replace the ball joint kevin, Twice I've had ball joints come loose on me, This was a long long time ago and I did the same thing, I ended up smacking the bottom of the ball joint and mushrooming the bottom end, had to cut a little bit off and just run a nut on there, Both times the ball joint came off I was in a parking lot, no real damage, but talk about scary.

I've never had to use a ball joint seperator on honda/acuras. It's a fine technique on how to remove them. Its called used the biggest hammer and smack the side of the lower control arms as hard as you can several times, both sides. About 10 smacks with the BFH they ALWAYS come loose for me. It's actually one of my favorite parts when replacing a axle, I just take my anger out on the lca's ;)

Anyhow, back on topic.. the only time I ever break ---- is when I'm taking apart plastic stuff like doing dashboards and stuff, cars that I am unfimilar with, I just start ripping and tearing. I rember the first dash on a 300zx I did, dear god :-X LOL

lol, I thought I was the only one. My buddy with the SHO has a 8 foot pole that he wedges in there and just ------- jumps on it and they come off like nothing

i broke a balljoint rubber cover trying to get it out so i could install my clutch. beat the living crap outta my brake disc trying to get the hub off so i could install lugs in the hub...ended up porking out some $$ to get it done at a shop, brake disc was ok, just a few dents in it.
i don't realy brake stuff when i work on my car, i just end up doing things over and over= the small things like the vacuume hoses, painting charge pipes, boost controler,
but ----, i aint a profesional mechanic and neither are alot of us here. yea we can work on cars and the end result will be goo, but we can't compare our skill and practice to a 40-50 hour a week working professional mechanic.

I broke alot of ---- on my dash torquing the bolts down, but you really only need about 3 bolts to hold that bitch on there, when the doors are closed it won't fall out anyways.

i take them off like that too, but the si control arms are different and don't have that little flat spot to hit. this is how i got the driver side off, but the passenger side was in there good. i hate a ball joint seperator b/c it always rips the boot :P anyways, what do think about drilling a very small hole through the nut and bolt while it's bolted on and sticking a cotter pin through it? i mean i only cut off a few threads, just enought to where i can't put a cotter pin in, but there is still plenty off thread for the nut to hang on to, so as long as it has a cotter pin to hold it in place, it should be alright, right? got the tps fixed yesterday, now i just need a radiator fan shroud. i'm driving around with no fan, but the car hasn't gone over normal temp once, not even at stoplights ???
