I agree, if this isn't his daily driver. If he needs the car to get him around then saving money for the swap would likely mean taking the bus. 
But yeah, if you can, save for a b16, trust me, you won't be dissapointed

You could always go with a turbo zc motor the motors are about 800-1000 or you can find something in a junk yard like a b18b and turbo that. What ever you do be carefull blowing up motors gets expensive and have fun.
