D or B series? Which do you prefer?

Alright, I know there are some strongly oppinionated people on here regarding single or double cam motors. Obviously if you're driving a civic, the D will stay in for a lot of you, but how many of you run, plan on running, or would prefer a B series motor.

As for me, I'm still running my D16Z6, but I just picked up an LS short block so that I can build an LSVTEC for my summer project. If you're able to run a B series, I don't see any reason to try and build the D (other than that parts are dirt cheap)

Whaddaya guys think?

Re:D or B series? Which do you prefer?

id say ls/vtec. it just has more potential to go faster. without having to spend lots of money to make it go fast. but u pay a lot more if u blow of a b series. but if i had the money id have a built ls.

Re:D or B series? Which do you prefer?

B series motors can go real fast for real cheap

D series motors are cheap and abundent. If you blow one up, you can get another for $10. There really is no advantage to a D-series, I think they're worthless

that's kinda how I feel. Hotrex seems to think that he's discovering some magic to the D. haha

im biulding my D series motor. its the first motor that i am actually biulding and its fun and the best part is its cheap. once i get a little more experienced ill probably go the b series motors.

i built a d...who wants to buy it

d series love. may not be the best platform but it sure is dirt cheap to build, parts are cheap and i guarantee i will lace alotta b series fools this summer. ifor me its just the fact that everyone in my area has a b16a and i just want to show them that the d can be deadly.

I was just waiting for the d-series love to come around. Yeah, I guess it's kinda like having a HMT and being able to run with all the people around that spent a bunch on their kits.

Re:D or B series? Which do you prefer?

The price difference between the two are not that much different. Rods and pistons are the same between the two and thats the most important part of a turbo car. Yeah head work might be slightly more on a B series cause you have to buy one more cam but the B series head will flow a shitload more. As for Quaife's they're pretty much the same price between the two.

I think the main advantage for the D is so that people can say they're single cam is faster than a dual cam. Its always fun to be the underdog.

hotrex 04-07-2004 01:01 AM

Re:D or B series? Which do you prefer?

bottom line its the fact that the b series kit costs 2 grand
for that 2 grand i turned my mini-me into a 18psi guzzling b series slaughterin machine.

couple that with a legit 2 g turbo kit equals 4gs worth of fun.

i kinda like my B-series...but bbka kinda dissapointed me with his D16Z6... :'( little ------ single cam made more HP than me... :-[

Re:D or B series? Which do you prefer?

the single cam and double cam has ever little to do with why the B series motors are better for performance than the D series.

b series come from the factory stronger, make more power, most of the time more displacement. those reasons are key. the fact that one has 1 camshaft and the other has 2 camshafts makes little difference.

hotrex 04-07-2004 01:09 AM

Re:D or B series? Which do you prefer?

mmmm one camshaft.....mmmmm

I think we all know that, but the number of cams are the most easily identifiable and distinguishable feature difference between the two motor lineups.

i wish they made a sohc b series..... that sthe only way id rock one

Just remove one cam.

Re:D or B series? Which do you prefer?

Love for both motors, its mainly the love for the H. They keep is simple and build it strong. B series just look so sick in an old ass crx or civic and they really do pump out that much more power then a D. Having two cam gears is cool 2 look at too, only the zc was representin nicely for the D with 2 cams.

hotrex 04-07-2004 01:50 AM

Re:D or B series? Which do you prefer?

sohc vtec is better than a zc

racerex 04-07-2004 01:51 AM

Re:D or B series? Which do you prefer?

I've never really been down with the zc. I figure if you're going to go through the trouble of a swap, do somehting with some real potential.

Re:D or B series? Which do you prefer?

Are you guys fucken kidding me? If you don't know that the D series is better, go kill yourself.
The reason I rock hondas is because they are the cheap car that all the V8 guys hate. So if your the underdog, and you run the smaller engine of the family, and smoke ----, then you truely are the underdog. With a B series, your fakin' the funk.
Go get a D series, smoke ----, and then the V8 guy feels twice as bad, cause you beat his ass and your not even running the "big" motors from honda. I want to smoke em' with the little one. ;)

Another point, all the guys on honda-tech run B series. LOL :P ::)

the only v8 guys who feel bad about getting beat by a honda are the equivalent to the honda guy who feel bad when pep boys is out of neon underglows

Re:D or B series? Which do you prefer?

I only have one cam, and I make more power at 3000 RPM then you guys do at 9000RPm ;D

Re:D or B series? Which do you prefer?

one cam is the way to go :)

Re:D or B series? Which do you prefer?

I just turbocharged what I had and I am pretty pleased with it. I kinda like having a sohc because I'm not just the underdog to domestics, but to b-series guys also. I think people are more impressed with my sohc than if I had just swapped a b-series motor in anyways. I could have made more power from a b-series in stock form, but oh well. I can easily make more HP than the street can handle when I build my d-series so I don't see a point of swapping a b-series in.

Re:D or B series? Which do you prefer?

B series for life mother fuckers, i've never had, nor do i ever plan on having a D, unless i just buy a little piecer hatch back or something just to rape

m76 04-07-2004 08:14 AM

Re:D or B series? Which do you prefer?

The b series a nice, but to expensive. The trannys cost 800 for a ls. And the d's cost 250. The facts is you have to go turbo w/ a d series in my opion to see some real power.

i read of one guy who had a zc and machined the head to take b18 valvtrain. he said it was relatively simple.

go d series, i don't have either, but i wish i did so i could go d series. easier to find them, easy to build them. go with the underdog

my built d series, as bbka said, is capable of more hp than is practical on the street. so hey sounds like fun to me.

Amen to that!!
Personally I would rather have a B-series cause you can push alot more power out of them than you can a D, in the long run anyways.
One thing I really like better about the D is that you can pretty much come close to matching the hp and torque. The torque for most of the B's is pathetic IMHO. If you got 200hp out of a D your torque would be close to 180-200. With a 200hp B your torque would be close to 140-155 ::)
Personally I think a good motor to run for a turbo setup would be a CR-V motor B-20, better torque and more displacement to work with.

since when is 250 hp too much for practical daily driving?

Re:D or B series? Which do you prefer?

there so many good points here but im going to have to go with the d. Its cheaper and I think the parts are cheaper to come by as well. Maybe not a huge diffrence but i do know some parts has a less price. I know na speaking the b you could do more power easily than a d but the bitch cost more. And if you do blow a motor i know for a fact the d is alot cheaper than a b. Also to me the b is overated in my opinion. :-\

thats not true man, lmao...

more displacement = less torque i forgot :/

you could prob make more torque from a non vtec d series than a vtec b series, turbocharged wtht he same horsepower... but not the non vtec b series. when yo do that you're trading horsepower (revs) for torque.

Re:D or B series? Which do you prefer?

This is coming from personal experiance here. I took my car out racing the other night. My very first race I missed shifting into 4th gear and grinded the ---- out of the tranny and it now makes whinning noises at me. I got offered a Z6 tranny for $40 and I also got offered a Y8 tranny for free. Let's see you find a b-series tranny for that much. 8)

If I end up building my d-series I will be going for at least 400 at the wheels... maybe 500...
