Computer smart people, I need your help*virus problem!

I have looked through my entire computer and finally found this damn file that is causing me problems. Norton can't seem to do a damn thing about it either. I get this pop-up that says "Norton has found a virus" and I click "OK" and it comes right back. This happens like 5 times in a row. Well, I found this damn file and my stupid ass computer won't let me do a damn thing about it. I tried to delete it and it said "You cannot delete this file, you do not have permission to access this file" and ---- like that. WTF? This is my ------- computer bitch. I can do whatever the ---- I want. Well, I can't even open this damn file to see WTF it even is. It is attached to my start menu and won't go anywhere. Ever since this thing has been on here I have been getting pop-ups like crazy and those damn message pop-ups. I leave my modem on(cable modem) all night and I wake up and have to clear away like 10 of those message things and about 10 of those "Norton has found a virus but can't do ---- about it" things.

Also, today when I turned my computer on, the "Homepage" site was changed to some stupid ass "findwhatever" site. That really pisses me off. If I was to use these bastards service before, I certainly would have changed my mind after learning they hacked my computer. WTF are they thinking? I'm so pissed. I'm ready to delete every file on my computer and buy a new harddrive. >:(
Anybody know what I can do? I can't get rid of this fucker. >:(

safe mode WITH command prompt. do it from the prompt. regular safe mode it might not let you delete it.

if all else fails. boot from a windows cd. goto command prompt. and delete it. NOTHING will be loaded then

Re:Computer smart people, I need your help*virus problem!

Ok, I couldn't figure out how to go into safemode. I guess XP is different than 98 :-[. I used Norton to scan again and that didn't help much. I found a file that was infected on my own because Norton is worthless. I found all kinds of adult chat and sex line files that were attached to different things. I'm so pissed. To top it all off, when I restarted the computer, my homepage was changed AGAIN!!!! Mother fuckers! I want this ---- gone. I want to destry the dumbass that is making this ----. What is the point? They sneak porn into my computer that is filled with viruses and ---- and they think that is going to make me want to sign up for a "Lifetime free membership"? >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

ok here is how you choose boot mode.

press F8 when it starts to load windows. if it doesn't work the first time. turn you comp off and press F8 a little earlier. F8 works will all versions of windows. with XP. choose safe mode with command prompt.

Damn, I'm back. I couldn't post topics for unknown mysterious reasons.

I logged into safemode and deleted that ---- manually with no problems. I also ran a scan while in safe mode after I deleted it and it came back clean. I think it's fixed. I hate hackers. >:(

Save the necessity's (porn, music, movies) then format your computer and re-install windows. If anything goes wrong with my computer I usually just take the easy way out instead of trying to fix ----. I am sure all that time you spent trying to get rid of that virus or whatever it was you could have had a fresh copy of windows up and running.

You pay for norton anti-virus? I thought all software was free these days. ;)

I'm not a big computer guru. I'm not sure what you mean by format. I don't know a whole lot about computer language. :-[ My main fear was losing my precious porn!

I'm a virus tracker, lol.

btw, you probably picked it up with kaza/imesh ,etc.. if you download any executables such as certain patches, game fixes, games, etc... I've found many. I actually picked up one that allowed users to download ANY file on my computer while in kaza...

Re:Computer smart people, I need your help*virus problem!

Dr.Boost you're computer was infected virally before Norton was able to detect the virus. Unless you're trying to access some resource that window NEEDS to operate, what file is infected?
When the virus warnings pop up are they different file names that are popping up?

I would back up all of your data files and format the machine and install everything over again.

It sounds to me like you've run something and someone is using you as a backdoor and Norton is seeing some of the viruses but at some point the backdoor was put on without norton knowing.

This is becoming a common practice amidst anyone with broadband internet access.

I will help you out as best I can.

Re:Computer smart people, I need your help*virus problem!

Virus scripts can be attached via, Windows Media Player its a security flaw that Microsoft hasn't addressed yet. Scripts for internet programming CAN be run from .avi, .mpg, etc... movie format files (I am not sure about audial files).

From these scripts malicious programs can be installed to your machine, the only real way to block them is to get very ---- with your Norton Security program and block any 'new' scripts from opening without your consent first.

Re:Computer smart people, I need your help*virus problem!

The name of the file was C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\msconfig32.exe and it was shutting my computer down also. The other night it scared the hell out of me. I was sleeping and I guess I had the volume turned up. It has tried to shut down and restart a couple times. I have it setup so you have to enter a passwod to open windows though. I'm not sure if that helps. :-\

EDIT: I just found out it is still changing my homepage to "findwhatever.com". Mother fucker. That is starting to piss me off bad. >:( >:( >:(

Re:Computer smart people, I need your help*virus problem!

msconfig32.exe is a executable that lets u change certain parameters of windows like what loads.

Do u have the ORIGINAL WINDOWS XP CD? if so u may just need to re-install windows. Do u have any friends that are computer savy? actually installin windows is fine but installin all the proper drivers can intimidate novice users.

Do u have a system restore CD? Do u have anything you want to keep on your computer? Pics? Do u know how to setup your email? Its not that hard, especially w/ newer windows to start from scratch.

Honestly I dont know of any viruses that just randomly restart your computer. I bet u ran something that instaled a back door into your computer which would allow people to control it. does it restart every day? try uunn plugging your modem for a few night and see if things get different.

Re:Computer smart people, I need your help*virus problem!

if i were you, i would back up all my important ----. you should then format and reinstall windows xp. what you need to do is get into your bios - when the computer immediately turns on and is counting memory press del or f1(depending on manufacturer). in one of the sub menus, you should see a "boot order" menu. get into that. change your boot order to 1. cd 2. floppy 3. ide0(or HDD0). save settings and exit bios. put your windows xp cd into the cd drive. when your computer boots up, it should say something like "press any key to boot from cd". press any key. it should now load up windows xp setup. it will ask you where you want to put the operating system. you want to put it in C:. it will then ask you do you want to format, quick format, or leave file system intact. you want to format(i only wouldn't quick format when you know that your hard drives fucked up by a virus- be safe). everything after that is pretty self explanitory, just do what it says. as far as drivers, windows xp usually has most or all of the device drivers that you need, so i dont think you need to worry about drivers. if anything, find your cds with proper drivers, or download them from the internet. one of us can help you figure out how to correctly install your drivers or anything else that comes up.

Have you patched your Windows XP at all?

Chacko 08-09-2003 11:02 AM

Re:Computer smart people, I need your help*virus problem!

I found your problem Dr. Boost, msconfig32.exe is a viral file on your machine and is part of the windows boot process, thus its undeletable.
Visit:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com...ybot.worm.html

for instructions on how to remove it.

The reason your antivirus keeps popping up is because your computer is being used as a backdoor every time you're online and people are sending 'trojans' through to get to other computers. Norton can't pick up the spybot because either a) the virus was new with your current set of definitions or b) it was activated in a way that norton wasn't able to screen the data.

Re:Computer smart people, I need your help*virus problem!

i always go through my registry to the local machine/software/microsoft/windows/current version/Run folder and delete any unneccessary entries (bookmark it). what you can do is boot a DOS disk and delete the file yourself. www.bootdisk.com

sorry im not more detailed but i gotta go

Dr.Boost 08-09-2003 01:07 PM

Re:Computer smart people, I need your help*virus problem!

You are correct Chacko. That was the name of the virus. I went through those instructions and ran a scan without system restore in safe mode and it came back clean. When I logged back in without safe mode I found out that my homepage was once again changed to www.findwhatever.com. This is bullshit. I want to sue these bastards. They fucked my computer up.

I have the XP cd that came with my computer. How do I delete everything and reinstall XP? I'm to the point where I don't care what gets deleted. I want this ---- out of my computer. It's like having some dude sleeping in your closet and not knowing if he is going to slit your throat in the middle of the night.

When I reinstall XP, will I lose programs that I paid for such as Prog-Studio, Norton Anti-Virus, Kazza...? I guess it's a small price to pay to get rid of these damn viruses. I feel so helpless. I can't reach through the computer screen and pistol whip the bastard that is doing this. >:(

You'll lose your installed programs, yes. You can go through and write down your registration information though, thats part of what I consider 'backing' up :)

Re:Computer smart people, I need your help*virus problem!

If you are receiving many popups when IE is not running you probably have downloaded some spyware from someplace. Either through your porn, imesh or kazaa or a million other places. I had a very similar problem with I would leave my computer for a half hour and come back to serioulsy 212 IE windows and just as many Norton windows saying I have downloaded an .exe file. I was going crazy from seeing all the popups.

To clean up my computer I used spybot. You can read up on it here:
http://security.kolla.de/
although some people, for intstance my friends have had problems with running other programs because they deleted ---- they was used to run other programs. SAVE ALL THE FILES YOU HAVE REMOVED incase you wanted to restore them.
Other people have used adaware with no problems to delete their spyware.
HTH

Let us know your results...

Uh, I ran that scan and came back with 141 problems! Is that normal? It couldn't fix all of them though. I'm going to try to restart and run it again. :'(

Chacko, yes I made www.homemadeturbo.com my homepage several times and it keeps changing it. I even deleted www.findwhatever.com from my cookies and history. The fucker keeps coming back like a bad case of herpes. >:(

Thanks for all your help guys. I'll be back after I restart this thing........

Ok. I ran the scan again and it came back with 61 problems. It fixed all of them. When it was scanning things, I was reading what it was scanning and it came up with all kinds of "XXXTeen" and "XXXDialer" and "XXXSEX" files. I tried to search for them, but couldn't find them to delete them. I'm about 30 seconds away from deleting Kazaa completely. If it's going to cause me these problems I don't want it.

I'll let you guys know if it is fixed. Thanks for all your help. :) You guys are great.

HAHA...I had over 250 problems.

The reason why you could not find it when you did a search is because they are located in your registry. YOu can access the registry from the command prompt: 'regedit'. Spybot cleans the spyware out of there. The registry is the heart of your computer so you don't want to go in there deleting ---- that you don't know what it does then you may run into serious problems.
You are getting majority of this ---- from downloading the porn. Just run spybot every once in a while and that should clean it out.

Re:Computer smart people, I need your help*virus problem!

A lot of those problems with "viruses" and weird files on your computer come from spyware that is placed on your computer when you search the web. Spyware are small progs that run on your computer and send back info to the company that gave it to you. Some of these programs are Bonzai Buddy, Gator, etc. They are bullshit and really piss a tech guy like me off. You should go online (download.com) and get Ad-Aware 6 and also Spybot:Search adn Destroy. They are free and everyone should have them. Run them before you decide to reformat your comp. Because that is a extreme way to fix your comp. Run these programs once a month or so after. All the progs that come up in ad-aware can be deleted. Hope this helps.

Dr.Boost 08-09-2003 08:49 PM

Re:Computer smart people, I need your help*virus problem!

I downloaded that and used it. It came up with 141 problems. Now it comes back with none.

I was looking at the files it was searching and it came back with a bunch of gator files and Bonzi buddy along with a bunch of others that I'm sure are causing problems. It also came up with a bunch of files called "back Lite" or something like that. I think Kazaa is going to be deleted from my computer very soon. I'm still contemplating. It's like giving up a child......wait a minute, I don't want kids. >:(
