Its not an mpeg or and avi file so I can't just drag it to the desktop. I think I need some type of converter but I don't know ---- about computers...

if it's not a dvd movie than it should be just like any regular files. Can you actually see the extension of that video if so what is it?

when I open the folder on the DVD these are the files on it:

VIDEO_TS.BUP
VIDEO_TS.IFO
VIDEO_TS.VOB
VTS_01_0.BUP
VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_0.VOB

There's only one video on the disk.

Those are content of a dvd movie, the only way to get the video out of it is by using a dvd ripping software.

Well considering he just said it's on a dvd-r, i would assume it's in dvd format...something that was probably done on a dvd burner that usually hooks up to your tv. In order to convert dvd formats to avi or mpeg you need to get a converter...but be prepared if it's a long movie, it'll take forever to convert. Not too sure where to get the converters at, i just have my friend from work do it for me...he has no life And yeah...those are dvd formats.
