charge pipes = finished!! *pics* *PICS BACK UP*
well, as many of you may know, i tried my hand at welding last week and thought i was getting the hang of it pretty good, so i decided to go ahead and make my charge pipes. man, towards the end, i learned how to get a good bead and i could keep it going until i had to stop because the pipes were laying flat on the ground :-\ anyways, a grinder and some high temp engine paint is all you need to look like a pro ;D

Nice, flat black, looks great now, I'm going to have to do mine also, ---- it, I will. Even if they look like ---- in the end, flat paint will cover it all, and they will work better than my homodepot couplings.
Good Job |

i welded my oil pan this weekend and my weld looked just like yours, and i've been welding for years :-\ not having gas really sucks.

Re:charge pipes = finished!! *pics*
your welds are looking nice, at least they don't have gaps in them like my exhaust welds.

Re:charge pipes = finished!! *pics* *PICS BACK UP*
Teg,
The black looks nice I might paint mine somewhat soon too.... As for the welds they could be better but I'm sure they are stong enough. The only thing is are they sealed...which I doubt from looking at the pictures. If you have some boost leaks thats where I'd guess they are from. Otherwise good job, the welds will get better with practice. |

Re:charge pipes = finished!! *pics* *PICS BACK UP*
what kinda welder you using, arc?
|
Re:charge pipes = finished!! *pics* *PICS BACK UP*
na, it's like a 90 amp mig. it does good for the charge pipes, i know the welds are big and ugly, i've never welded before this!!!
|
Re:charge pipes = finished!! *pics* *PICS BACK UP*
using mig with just wire, mig with gas, or mig with gas "core" wire?
|
Re:charge pipes = finished!! *pics* *PICS BACK UP*
yeah, without gas, shielded wire. the pics don't do much justice to my last weld that i did. i did it in one pass, but i would have to stop b/c the pipes were laying on the ground and you can only go around so far ;) so i would have to stop, reposition the pipe, start over again and get a build up every time i had to restart.
|
Re:charge pipes = finished!! *pics* *PICS BACK UP*
instead of grinding the pipes you should have grinded the welds :P. thats not so bad since your just using a wire fed with no gas. maybe its puddling up like that because your speed is too high maybe??. i dont know. but the black paint did wonders. atleast u can say u welded up everything and most of the fab was done by yourself. so when are u gonna finish?

Re:charge pipes = finished!! *pics* *PICS BACK UP*

Re:charge pipes = finished!! *pics* *PICS BACK UP*
you should've taken a grinder to those welds....
|
Re:charge pipes = finished!! *pics* *PICS BACK UP*
Kev's been working out. :P
If you want to weld like a pro, get an automatic helmet. I can't weld with a regular mask. Well, I can't really weld with an auto mask either, but it's way better. ;) __________________ Best Car Insurance | Auto Protection Today | FREE Trade-In Quote |
Re:charge pipes = finished!! *pics* *PICS BACK UP*
You gotta turn up the heat on that welder and get some better penetration. Come on now, don't be afraid of a little penetration. ;)
|
Re:charge pipes = finished!! *pics* *PICS BACK UP*
Not trying to thread jack but Will the welder at wal-mart be sufficient to do things such as charge pipes and exhaust? It's a little cheap thing like $90. Not sure what type but its 70 amps I think.

Re:charge pipes = finished!! *pics* *PICS BACK UP*
THREAD JACK:
I just did some fantastic welding with my El-cheapo Ebay welder. I found out that the spool works alot better as it gets smaller. It keeps getting clogged up and turns into a rats nest. >:( This ---- is nasty, but it works. I can't pick on ANYBODY too bad because my ---- looks like ass too. :( http://pic1.picturetrail.com/VOL111/...6/51636215.jpg http://pic1.picturetrail.com/VOL111/...6/51636185.jpg I welded a 2.25" into a 2.5" pipe. It was a bitch, but it actually worked. http://pic1.picturetrail.com/VOL111/...6/51636203.jpg http://pic1.picturetrail.com/VOL111/...6/51636199.jpg For reference, this is the welder I used: http://pic1.picturetrail.com/VOL111/...6/51636668.jpg Sorry for the thread jack. :-[ EDIT: Just found my new avatar. 8) __________________ Best Car Insurance | Auto Protection Today | FREE Trade-In Quote |
Re:charge pipes = finished!! *pics* *PICS BACK UP*
Kevin, that ---- is true inspiration for everyone to do thier own chargepipes. That ---- looks nice.
it's a whole lot better than paying a guy $400 bucks, huh Bamboo? :-X :D |
Re:charge pipes = finished!! *pics* *PICS BACK UP*
I have that same welder.. and my welds look way better, i had to add a spring on the tensioner though so it was more consitant.. before i did that my welds looked like yours.
|
Re:charge pipes = finished!! *pics* *PICS BACK UP*
lol, so much spatter, spray the pipe with that spatter resistant stuff before you weld, then use a brush after your done, that way your ---- looks half assed. not ------- snot welds
|
Re:charge pipes = finished!! *pics* *PICS BACK UP*
It's good enough for the girls I go out with. :P
That spatter ---- was all over my garage floor. It makes a nasty mess. I don't really weld enough to need a big expensive setup, so this works for me. This was only the 3rd time I ever used it in like 1 year. __________________ Best Car Insurance | Auto Protection Today | FREE Trade-In Quote |
