CBR 900????

Well due to traffic and me having to drive way the hell out to san diego from OC every day for my medical externship pretty soon, I have been seriously thinking about getting a bike.. Someone told me to get one over 750cc or its really not worth it.... so my question to you guys is anyone have one? how reliable are they. How much does it cost to insure. and Is there a site where i can find a used one like 92-95?

Any input would be aprecciated..

Re:CBR 900????

you should buy my KZ 550. DOHC 4 cylinder, 6-speed. 20k miles. very reliable. 900$ and its yours

Re:CBR 900????

I used to work for a Honda MC dealer (6 years), during which the CBR900RR was introduced...

Fast as hell, yes it's as reliable as gravity. The only ones we ever had in the shop were there for pipes, gearing (smaller front sprocket), K&N, tires, and the occasional 600 mile service. What almost every one came into the shop for eventually was an insurance estimate (which I did). Falling over in a parking lot was a minimum of $1000.

I don't want to sound like an old man, but I'm going to...
California traffic + fast motorcycle + lane splitting = extra danger. Go ahead and get it (I would) but don't be an ass, and get some good riding gear. It's not a matter of if you'll fall off, it's when.

Looking at buying a used one, make sure you pay close attention to the condition of fork seals (pretty common failure on any motorcycle), chain & sprocket wear, brake pads, and tires (damn expensive on a 900). Pay really close attention to the condition of the levers, handlebars (bent or not), fairing misalignments...basically anything that indicates it's been wrecked. You might have a hard time finding one that hasn't at least been dropped.

If I'm telling you everything you already know, sorry, but you asked!

I don't live in CA, so I couldn't tell you where to start looking...

Re:CBR 900????

If its your first bike, then my advice is to stay under 700cc's. The bigger bikes are going to be a lot harder to ride, and get you into trouble faster. A good friend just picked up a Yahmaha 650cc and its plenty fast for him (he's a first time rider)

Also buy an older bike (like you are looking for) or something like that...basically buy something that you dont care about putting down, because IT WILL HAPPEN.

Happy riding

Re:CBR 900????

not true about anything smaller then 750 sucking.

honda CBR600F4i = 0-60 in 2.8 seconds.. you car does what. 0-60 in... er, 6 seconds? it should be fast enough.

Re:CBR 900????

Even a CBR 600 F2 is fast & cheap.

Re:CBR 900????

For anyone that is riding for the first time, buy a beater I wouldn't buy a brand spanking new bike. I know couple of people thinking that couple of hours riding would make them them experience riders.. WRONG!!!. They all had accidents. So, get a used bike then move on to something that you like. And get a LOUD ASS EXHAUST!!!!! ;)

OH yeah, stick with a 600 for your first. It's plenty of power for anyone. Todays bikes with fuel injected system you can outrun just about anything. Do wheelies up to 4 gears straight... ;D

Re:CBR 900????

The new 600's are pretty damn fast, especially the R6 and CBR 600RR because they've been able to drop the weight drastically in the last year. But when I had my 2000 GSX-R600 I wanted more bike in about a month of riding. Most 600's are registered for 280kmh and the 750's and above are 320kmh, I had no desire to go 280 let alone 320, I just wanted more torque.

Re:CBR 900????

For a first bike I would recomend a Ninja 250. Looks sweet, reliable, not to slow (tops out at 100mph at 14k in 6th, but it gets there FAST), but most importantly it is very light and very nimble.

Great for learning how to lane split and ride in traffic.

Re:CBR 900????

look.. i don't own a bike. i think there dangerous. but i have been riding for years. my two brothers own 1000cc and a 929cc. i'm always riding them. go for 750 and above. yeah a 600cc bike can do 160mph no problem, but the value goes to ----. once your on the hwy you will see the difference as well. as far as insurance, my brother is only 25 and the other is 30. they only pay about $65 for theft. i did a quote on myself just to see and it was only $87. you don't really need full coverage. because if you get into an accident. you'll be dead most likely.

projekteg 11-19-2003 12:40 PM

Re:CBR 900????

i had a 99 cbr 900rr, and it's fast as hell, as someone else mentioned, i wouldn't get it if it's your first bike. a 600 is plenty and then some. in my opinion, the yamaha r6 is the best 600, but the honda f4i's are very nice too. insurance is actually very cheap for bikes, because what's the most damage you can do?? chances are if you do wreck, your not gonna ---- up anyone elses ----, so there reall isn't a risk for the insurance company. whoever told you not to get a 6, is either stupid and doesn't know they're ----, or has been riding for a while, and just moved on. a 600 is plenty ;)

warren_teg 11-19-2003 12:48 PM

Re:CBR 900????

projekteg has a point. a 600 is plenty, but if you're wanna does people who would rather have a b18c5 than a b18b. then go for like a 900cc.

projekteg 11-19-2003 12:53 PM

Re:CBR 900????

yeah, but it's like you have a b18b first and it feels fast and it's plenty for you for a while, then you master it and get a bigger one, i doubt many people that have never had a honda before, look for a b18c5 when they are considering buying a honda, same pricipal ;)

Re:CBR 900????

yeah this would be my first bike... so im guesing the 600 would do then... and i would also think the parts and insurance would be cheaper on the 600 than the 900......

Im not looking to get a new one... something along the lines of a 92-95... a beater... a fixeruper... i dont care... im gonna primer that bitch black anyways...

but yeah guys thanks for the info.... once again

Oh yeah im still keeping my car... hopefully with a new job ill be getting soon i can build up a reliable LS setup.

But this bike is pretty much just for transportation, for now..... (evil grin on face...)

Re:CBR 900????

Warren_teg - Damn, thats hella low price for insurance :o My insurance for my 2000 ZX6R cost me 550$ one year, just for liability and this is thru Progressive. But then again I live in NYC :'(.

projekteg 11-19-2003 01:01 PM

Re:CBR 900????

the only older bike i would get would be the honda, all the other ones look like doo-doo. the honda f3 (predecessor of the f4i) are about as low as i would go, i think they are 94-96 or something like that, before those you have the f2'a and then you starting to look a little old, epecially considering the 04 bikes, holy ----, there are some phat ass bikes out now. every day it seems like i'm tore between getting a new bike or building up my car :P

krustindumm 11-19-2003 01:06 PM

Re:CBR 900????

250-$1500 er so
new plastic for anything-$1k

I pay $75/yr for liability and comprehensive, so if someone knocks it over in a parking lot, it almost payed for itself.

I also wouldn't get a katana or other steel frame bike. Not just because they're slower, but because they weight 100 pounds more than a comparable aluminum frame bike and are much harder to handle.

Re:CBR 900????

I had a CBR600F4i last year for about a month and a half. My insurance was $250 for six months until my insurance company said, "Oh, wait, we don't insure those kinds of bikes anymore. Your policy will be cancelled in two weeks." The reason the rate was low was due to the agent not putting it in as a CBR but just as a 600cc bike. Progressive had the cheapest rate available which was... get this... $3000 a year. Needless to say, I had to trade that sucker back in. I did get up to an indicated 162mph on it though. ;D

Re:CBR 900????

its funny that i see this topic since i just spent a week in the hospital after i crashed my 94 cbr600. bikes are fun and if you are just starting out i would recommend you get a 600. just watch out for stupid people which i unfortunatly didnt i was turning right on to bruce b. downs here in tampa i had a green light the guy who flipped the u turn did not i swerved to miss his car and hit a curb at 45 mph. fractured the nose in four places, broke my left wrist, dislocated my shoulder and have enough road rash to last me a life time. if you get it dont be stupid start out slow an dont die

I dont want it to haul major ass and ----...

I just need it to get to work and school, cause im probably gonna be traveling 80+ miles to and from school and work everyday. And i get frustrated beeing stuck in traffic all the fuckn time....

I'll be carefull

projekteg 11-19-2003 04:28 PM

Re:CBR 900????

yeah, i've had two good friends die on bikes in the past 2 yrs. :P they definitely are dangerous, you just have to know your boundaries........

warren_teg 11-20-2003 10:00 AM

Re:CBR 900????

you say you won't haul ass with it. i said the same thing to myself many times. as soon as you get on it, i gurantee your gonna at least hit 140 maybe on the third or fourth ride. you'll pull up to some chick and take off. believe it's gonna be really tempting.

fiero_god 11-20-2003 09:25 PM

Re:CBR 900????

The 600's are bad ass for their size ,my first bike was a 400. As for laying it down there are two kinda riders those that been down( me) and those that are going down. Bikes aren't that dangerous its just the fuckers not paying attention and some of the riders that think they are bad ass by showing off. Be careful on them though i have been in 3 fairly bad accidents ,none i wasn't able to walk or limp away from though ;). It fucked up my lower back ,ankle ,and knee that was like 5 some years ago and i still have a few problems but getting better :). Just BE CAREFUL i already lost enough friends on them don't wanna lose another ,exspecially over something stupid or preventive. As for insurance you guys got it made im paying close to 1000 a year for full coverage ,you mention harley and BAM everything jacks up...oh well. Im not worried about wrecking im worried about those damn deer >:(

Dr.Boost 11-20-2003 09:41 PM

Re:CBR 900????

As already mentioned, BE CAREFUL. My brother was in a bad accident and barely survived. One of the worst phone calls I have ever received. Just remember it's not just you that will hurt from it, it's your whole family. I think I was more hurt than my brother. I just couldn't picture what life would be like without him. It's scary ----. I think about buying a bike all the time. I even looked at the 954RR and the new 1000RR the other day, but talked myself out of it for several reasons. It's not death that scares me, it's my family. :-\

Re:CBR 900????

I've been riding one form or another bike since i was 6yrs old :)

I STRONGLY SUGGEST you not ride in rush hour(s) in a big city unless you HAVE to. I was doing this for a year in Miami and finally it caught up to me. I was laid up for a couple months when an SUV decided he needed to be in my lane, hit me @70mph and then drove off like nothing happened. Hell maybe he/she didnt even know they hit me. This was the 4th time I've been down in a serious mannor and the helmet saved my life for sure (again). Here is a picture of my helmet:

http://dolemite.dyndns.org/albums/al...1big.sized.jpg

Notice the nice big chunk missing out of the forehead. The heavy jacket and gloves I was wearing spared me from any serious road rash except on my legs.. i was only wearing Khakis.

Proper safety equipment aside, a 900RR and most 750's can get away from a 'newbie' awfully fast! However if you keep your head on your shoulders and don't be a cock ... you'll be able to handle it.

The 600CC's of today put out WAY more than even my old 1996 GSX-R750 did :) Engine, weight and other technology are advancing so fast...

One of my first 'big' bikes was a 1984 Kawasaki GPz750 Turbo ... with a quick move of a vacuum hose it was 20psi of pure 750cc terror.. very scary bike! Lets talk about 5th gear @ 140mph rear tire breaking loose and other nutty ---- like that.

hotrex 11-22-2003 05:07 PM

Re:CBR 900????

agreed, bikes scare me in general, my uncle steve was riding doing 75 and his front tire blew out, he flew off his bike and landed on a steel guard rail on his back, the rail pretty much cut him in half, severed his spine and he bled to death before the ambulance could get mthere.

Re:CBR 900????

I'm a wuss and scared of bikes. I'd rather walk to diego, well not really but I'm hella scared of riding. I want to know how for kicks and when someone I know brings one over but never for a daily rider.

i really really really want to get a turbo bike, like an 85 honda CX 650. i think it would be really fun to modify one.

Re:CBR 900????

Alright well it seems as though you have enough info on what to buy but little help with where to buy it from.

I'd suggest taking a look at www.cycletrader.com

I think you'll be hard pressed to find a better site for finding motor cycles and within a decent price.

For insurance the bigger the bike the more expensive it will be but not by much. The main killer is full coverage. In michigan with 5 points on my liscense they wanted 3200 a year for a new R6. Full coverage is senseless becasue your almost paying for the bike in a year or two in just insurance. I ended up getting a 1993 gsxr 600. Full coverage was bout 2800 every year when I only paid 2500 for the bike, makes shitload of sense doesn't it? Well I got PLPD as we call it in michigan (personal liability and property damage) anyways it was about $300 a year.

I wouldnt suggest the bike I had it was very heavy and hard to handle. Acceleration was good but nothing like the new 600's.

Your friend who said anything below 750 is a waste is really a dumbass. The new 600's like the R6 are so light and very very powerful. I've ridden about everything 600's, 750's, 1000, 1100.... The biggest difference is on the highway. If you do a ton of highway riding get a 750 or bigger so you dont have to turn 8 grand to do 70 - 80. As for a new bike if I get one which I might this summer... I'm all about the new Liquid silver R6.

Oh like noted above get some gear. I never rode without leathers, a helmet and gloves. It didnt have to save my ass but it almost did a few times and I"m sure it would have helped a ton.

hope that helps, wow that was windy. I think i need to go look for some R6's now that you all got me excited about bikes again!

Re:CBR 900????

Thanks for the info Ive been doing a lot of reading into things... looks like im gonna have to save up like 2-3 grand to get anything decent. But im gonna go with a Private Party, cause fuckn dealers suck ass... yeah warranties and crap are good... but the financing and insurance is gonna kill me.. so im just gonna get liability or nothing at all. and dont worry im not gonna be one of those dumbasses busting wheelies on the freeway...

All of you guys have been a great deal of help..

and oh yeah about the 750cc thing... well my friend who told me that rides a Harley... so I could see how that would apply to that heavy beast
