well finally pulled the head off my blown block.. its been sitting since last weekend of september so thats why u see the rust in the cylinders.. this is what happens in the top of 3rd gear and the internal waste gate just isnt big enuf to handle the exhaust flow.. boost creep, detonation (happened soo fast couldnt really get outta it when i heard it ping), it leaned out to 15:1 a/f.. i expected to see melted pistons, but they're fine.. my datalogging was running, but car is only tuned to 12 psi which was 12.5:1 a/f.. i dont have a boost guage (something thats gonna be on my list to get here soon) and my ECU rom is only setup for stock map sensor so it only goes up to 12 psi.. so i really dont know how far up it boosted before it blew LOL.. oh well, i think my buddy who came with me to the races took it wayyyy harder than me.. i was like ---- happens.. he was like DUUuuuude that suxxxxxxxxx... i just laughed lol..

i've built a new block and getting ready to drop it in the teg today.. dropping my boost down to 9 psi where i originally had it when i was autoX'n and had no problems what-so-ever.. drag strip really did my motor in LOL

anyway, heres the pics
#1 and #3 cylinders cracked.. 2 and 4 are fine (as far as i can see)

eeesshhh! How could you run it without a boost guage? Didn't you feel the abnormally hard pull? Really did a number on that one

Speedz 11-19-2006 01:58 PM

Re: carnage pics

LOL, have always just used my laptop datalogger to watch my boost.. lesson learned.. boost guage coming soon

scottsi 11-19-2006 01:59 PM

Re: carnage pics

i ran without a boostguage and the wasteagate line connected before in a .60 t3 :-X i believe it bosted 17-20 psi spike, thank god the engine was built.

Re: carnage pics

in the past i always watched my boost via my laptop, and at 9 psi, it ran perfect i could beat the crap outta the car and still only hit 9 psi.. tonz of datalogging and watching my wbo2 told me i didnt have anything to worry about LOL> then i decided to see what the car would do at 12 psi... at the drag strip.. and though it was tuned to 12 psi, i hadnt done much racing at 12.. so didnt expect what happened.. oh well lesson learned.. getting one of those cyberdyne boost guages with memory ;)

i almost got the new block assembled.. i think i'm gonna have to buy a new oil pan gasket.. kinda screwed up the old one getting it off the block.. gotta love hondabond + oil pan gasket LOL

Yeah, because having to look over at your passenger seat everytime you want to see your boost makes sense? :S

Nice carnage

Re: carnage pics

Ouch. Lesson learned, use a boost gauge.

Chris Harris 11-19-2006 07:34 PM

Re: carnage pics

Screw a boost guage, the more guages you have, the more you tell a person about your setup...

Just make sure you get a bigger map sensor (Motorola 2.5 Bar) and set a boost cut...let the ECU save you.

Nice job on the sleeves Rick :P

Sweet carnage. <HT thumbs up> :)

Re: carnage pics

i've never seen a block cracked this bad.. i've got a gsr block sitting in my garage.. picked it up from a guy who melted his pistons down boosting 20 psi.. scored up the cylinder but no cracks that i can see.. gonna see if i can bore it out to 82mm and re use the block ;)

1 question was your foot still to the floor when it blew?

yea, thats a lot of money to spend. i figure if i am gonna spend $1000 to sleve a block, why not spend $2000 and just get a dart block

Re: carnage pics

There is a reason why I implemented boost cut in the honda maps years ago. At the time everyone put their noses up in the air at it but now most people use it. Provided you're tuned to just before the boost cut it will prevent things like this from happening. All it does is activate a 1000 RPM rev limiter if you exceed the set boost level.

Because DART blocks are legal at track events...

I'm pretty sure that you cant resleeve a block if it F'd up that bad too. I think once you break both the inner and outer sleeve...the block is only good for melting down.

Spend $2000 for a bare block really seams worth it ::) The quality of a OEM block is a lot better then the dart.

did you continue to drive it home? :P

accordepicenter 11-20-2006 06:36 PM

Re: carnage pics

ouch that about the worst cyl damage ive ever seen on a B without taking the pistons with it too... I overboosted on my accord to about 17psi about 3 times before i realized the wastegate line had a huge hole in it. Yes that was on the stock 135000 motor. Didnt damage a thing, even though it was an ass dyno tune with an safc and 450cc!!

Speedz 11-20-2006 07:13 PM

Re: carnage pics

LOL i was top of 3rd gear when it blew.. it pinged for a split second, then bogged... could smell the coolant.. my buddy told me he saw a big cloud of white smoke come outta the back.. when it bogged.. it died and never came alive again.. next vehicle down the strip was a fullsize dodge 4x4 dualie and he towed me back to the pits.. i swapped out my drag radials for my street tires.. called my wife and had her come with our Accord.. had my buddy get in my teg and i towed it home with our Accord. its been pushed around since LOL

J-MAN 11-20-2006 07:15 PM

Re: carnage pics

wow, just wow. hey i will probly need to pick your brain about piston choices for the hatch soon and then see when you would be able to come down and hit the dyno to tune it so i can be ready for this year.

Re: carnage pics

Jeff, no problem, just remember the head is shaved .040" so you will have to check piston to valve clearance (clay the chambers)

hmm, i guess the CTR's would have a heavy make out session with the valves if used.

I guess bad things happen to people who dont use boost gauges, might want to get on that.
