just came from a toyota dealer my girl wanted to look at a used tc(no comment), the guy is trying to smooth talk her and hand feed her til i showed up, i took the keys out of his hand and started the car.........he got real hesitant to speak and alot less confident then i open the hood and the ------- engine is floppin like its about to have a seizure the motor is beat the ---- up its a bunch or aftermarket parts on it and the car is USED to say the least. i start callin out problems and he combats with bs answers like well i don't notice it, thats normal, and for the price you can't beat it lol $17,000 with 40k he keep pitch a warranty and free oil changes and called the car "fast as hell" and a high performance vehicle, well i think you know how the story ends

Well, talking from experience, selling cars is alot better then being a service writer. I worked for years as a service writer and eventually had my own shop (it was a franchise, that was the worst!). It just ------- sucked, everyone hates you at a garage, theyre mad cause there car is broke, and even after its repaired they still hate you because your charging them "too much" (note "too much" is any amount over $5). Not to mention dealing with frickin whine *** mechanics. Dont get me wrong there are some good mechanics, but as a majority they area a bunch of whiners.

Just to qualify myself, I work at a Toyota dealer now. I find the cars pretty easy to sell, I mean really, most of the customers come in already liking Toyotas, whether they have had one or not. I hear more about shitty car dealers than pretty much anyone, so I just treat people good and thats about it. Myself, I dont really put alot of pressure on anyone, but I dont really need to, my sales dont suffer. Basically I just listen to what they are looking for and try to find the right vehicle, and terms that are within thier budget. Dmc1 is right though too, you gotta watch the other salesmen for sure, and some people will just make bad decisions. I would normaly ask people what they were looking to spend in the first place, that way I can show them the right car, and avoid the payment dillema.

As far as used cars, if its not mint, it go's to auction. I know thats not how everyone does it, but we dont really want to sell anything thats going to be a pain in the ***. I mean, where does that leave us, if we sell a car like that TC. The customer is pissed, they're going to trell everyone that we sold them a shitbox. Not to mention we will got NO repeat bussiness and the customer is going to hold us responsible for that crap *** car. So it just isnt worth it, fo us anyways.

I dont know if I would look at it as a career, its a great job, but you cant really go anywhere with it. I'l probably do it for a while anyways, the pay is good and theres no real responsability. I would say its a much better "job" or "career" then a service writer, thats for damn sure.

It is a month to month deal, so the pay gos up and down for sure. I would say though, at the place I work, if I sell like 6 cars (using an average) that I would probably make a little over 40K. But thats only selling 6 cars. A more reasonable expectaion would probably be to sell 10 - 14 cars a month.

Its a job where you have to sorta be aware of the seasonality curve (ie febuary sucks). I can tell you that the top salesman last month make a little over $7000 for the month, but obviously that isnt evety month.
